Baby, if you’ve been wondering,
Wondering, whats up with the Mets
They’re playing ball this week in Cincinnati,
Versus Reds at the GABP!

Seems like Mets are winning and winning
Town to town, up and down the league,
Maybe the Mets can win in Cincy,
Just watch and enjoy the games for a while.

Headin' up that highway leavin' the NL East behind,
Playoffs will be starting in a few,
Perhaps Reds will too, but there is plenty of time
Who knows, we may be playing in Saint Lou.

Hope Omar’s moves will help our starting pitching,
Maybe a Willis or a Barry Zito.
It's getting late, deadline is in a week or so,
So lets watch the Mets and hope this lead they won’t blow.

History Lesson
1968…

Ever wonder why the heck MLB had the very Eastern Atlanta Braves and semi Eastern Cincinnati Reds in the National League West, while teams in the Heartland of Middle America, the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs resided in the National League East? Well, you can blame the Mets for this one!

Yup. When realignment was being developed for the start of divisional play in 1969, the Mets had a say in how the league was going to be drawn up. Probably based on several St. Louis connections with the ball club (Bing Devine) and the feeling that the two time-defending NL Champs would be a great draw and rivalry it was decided that they’d be in the East with the Expos, Pirates, Phillies and Mets. Of course their long-standing rival, the Cubs had to join with them. So Cards and Cubs in, Braves and a fledgling Big Red Machine headed west to join the California trio and Astros.

Of course the Cards of the 60’s got old, and in a hurry, while still respectable at 87-75 that was good for a 4th place finish in 1969. They’d have a bunch of 80 win teams throughout the decade of the 70’s, but nothing suggesting anything better than a middling team, until Whitey-Ball in the 1980’s, when the Mets gambit of a rivalry with the Cards finally paid off!

The Reds? Only ran of one of the greatest eras in the game’s history. After two straight 4th place finishes in the old NL, they placed 3rd in the NL West in 1969. Under rookie manager Sparky Anderson in 1970, they won the first of 6 NL West flags in 10 seasons, as well as the first of 4 NL crowns. In that stretch, the only year they failed to finish 1st or 2nd was a 5th place finish in 1971.

Suffice to say, if the Mets took the Cardinals over the Reds based on who they thought would make a better short term rival, boy were they ever wrong!

Bump before failing off front page

Note to self, post this day before game, not day before off day

A lot of chin fuzz in the bullpen. These are not your father's Redlegs.

Good job finding a Majewski picture with a Reds hat.

Majewski got a blown save the other night, but the outfielder called up to replace Kearns, Chris Donofia, or whatever, got him off the hook with a GW single.

"New" SS Royce Clayton had 2 RBIs with a pinch double Sunday vas the Reds completed a 4-game sweep of the Rockies including 3 saves from Guardado.

Mets & Reds split 2-2 at Shea last month. Arroyo shut us down; Traschel beat Elizardo Rodriguez; Wright had 2 HRs to beat Milton and support Pedro, and Wagner choked big-time.

If the standings as they are today hold up, the Reds will be the Mets opponent in the NLDS.

Tom Seaver's never been short in crediting the catchers he's worked with ---- Jerry Grote, Johnny Bench, and Carlton Fisk. But the guy who caught his no-hitter was the less-than-legendary Don Werner.

Edgy, that's an ideal candidate for the "stuff you didn't know" thread.
Should there be separate ones for baseball stuff and non-baseball stuff?

I have no memory of Don Werner. I was probably aware of him at the time; back then I was collecting baseball cards and reading every team report every week in The Sporting News. But now the name doesn't sound remotely familiar.

Of course, just because I never heard of him doesn't mean I don't have him in my database: Don Werner.

He played in four games against the Mets.

Three future Mets in the Card's lineup that day, three in the Reds' lineup, including Seaver, and Ray Knight, who apparently came in for Rose for defense.
