David meets Dave

According to my Late Show Newsletter David Wright of the New York Mets will be on Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday, July 12.

Fire up your TiVo!

Tivo? How about just staying up wuss?

WAY past my bedtime!

On top of that, I'm so far behind on my TiVo'ed Daves (because of my vacation) I probably won't watch it for at least a week.

I just saw a clip on SNY of Wright on Letterman, basically Dave is busting Wright's balls about the Mets,.." are you guys that good or is the league just weak".....stuff like that.

Benjamin Grimm

Unfortunately, Dave is one of those misguided Yankee fans. He grew up in Indiana; most transplants seem to latch on to the Yankees. They don't know any better.

Yancy - "...most transplants seem to latch on to the Yankees. They don't know any better."

The Dark Side attracts those poor, unsuspecting souls that are weak in spirit.

No proof, but since his NBC prime years were during the good years for the Mets, I bet you he was considering himself a Met fan then and Mets would get frequent mentions on the show.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 13 2006 06:29 AM

I think back then he was still a Cincinnati Reds fan, which was the team he rooted for as a kid. The Mets did get a lot of mention, but Dave never called himself a Mets fan, and he never fawned over them as he does the Yankees.

I've been a big Letterman fan ever since the start of Late Night in 1982, and I've missed few shows. But I can't watch him interview a Yankee; I always fast-forward through those interviews.

Letterman guests that I fast-forward:

Any Yankee
Tom Arnold
Comedian George Miller (deceased)
Howard Stern
Billy Crystal (usually, but not always)
Race car drivers (usually, but not always)

A decent - though somewhat short & generic - appearence.
An early joke in the beginning (when announcing that night's guests) was pretty good as Dave produced a Wright baseball card which had it's 'fun fact' on the back saying: 'In his spare time David likes to bet on Baseball'

The kid seemed a shade nervous (talking very fast) but was otherwise fine. Zinged Dave with a; 'I've heard all your bad Met jokes and we all know you're a Yankee fan' -- to which Dave replied; 'only when they're winning'. Other than that he likes Cal Ripken, the Mets, Willie, his family, hot dogs, apple pie, ... yyybbb.

As with the SI article from a few weeks back and similar national exposures there's nothing that us Met nerds are going to learn or find surprising here.

Julia Stiles asked him which team he prefers.

"I like... both teams."

"You can't! You can't like them both."

"You can if you have a show."

i have a pretty high sensitivity and low threshhold for the Garvey/Carter/Seaver/Clemens all-American too perfect BS jocks... a type discussed elsewhere with regard to Wright.

Frankly, i don't get that vibe from him at all. He seems just a spunky, goofy down-home kid. He's good looking, but not in a "chiseled features" kind of way. More like a slightly scruffy surfer dude. Yeah, he's got a bit of frat boy in him, but he's not the one demanding the pledge bend over, but rather the nice guy who takes the sore-butted pledge out for a beer afterwards.

I liked the story he told about his brothers. His younger brothers always call him, to either congratulate him for a good performance or razz him when he stinks. He said that, after the bare-handed catch he made last season against SD, they called and left a message saying it was a good thing he didn't try to catch it with his glove, or he would've dropped it (noting to Letterman that he made alot of errors last year).

While he said nothing startling or contraversial, his answers didn't seem canned or rehearsed. He just seemed like a naturally decent guy you could hang out with, and if you drank too much, he'd drive you home.

Thanks - It was nice being able to watch that, and I know that MK will enjoy seeing it when he gets home from baseball camp :)

I had already received one phone call this morning from a female friend who was very pleased with Mr. Wright's appearance on the show - now I have the chance to see it for myself :)

Definitely.

Keep in mind how close Wright was to Joe McEwing, and how he used to go to the McEwing's place for dinner every night during spring training. Isn't this the kind of thing you would expect from someone who chose Joe McEwing as his first major league mentor?

Like Vic said - he seems to be just a decent guy.

My daughter's too young for him, but I have a cousin who's 23 and single.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 13 2006 09:58 AM

I'm not too worried about losing David to free agency. I fully expect a deal to get done, unless some bonehead causes a rift between David and either the city or the front office. Fortunately, Dick Young is dead at the present time, so at least, he won't screw this up for us.

On an unrelated note, further proof that David Wright is all that and a bag of chips: he's zooming up the charts in UMDB popularity. He's now all the way in 26th place, having passed a ton of Mets who had up to a five-year head start on him. He's bound to crack the top twenty before the end of the calendar year, if not before the end of the season.

Vic Sage

i think a guy whose idol is Cal Ripken may be inclined to stick with the team he started with. Especially since, as a kid growing up in Virginia, he was a fan of the Norfolk Tides.

One, why the hell are that many people searching for Mackey Sasser?

Two, how the hell does "Jonathan Papelbon" lead you anywhere near mbtn?

Yeah, just make sure Reyes doesn't get traded to, I don't know, Anaheim, and Mrs. Wright or Ms. Seeing David Wright doesn't get all jealous of Reyes' main squeeze's living the high life.

I met an African-American woman at a party, and she turned out to be a Mets fan. It's always a delight in DC, as DC folks tend to care about the 'Skins first, and golf (it's tru!) a distant second, and the Mets have rarely helped me forge any common ground across racial lines.

Her husband rolled his eyes when he saw her get all animated about the Mets. She told me about a recent event co-worker giving her tickets to see the Mets-Nats at RFK (it might have beent eh same Pedro game I caught). "But first answer this trivia questoiin: Who's the greatest Met of all-time?"

To which she said "Duh, Tom Seaver." Rolly-eyed husband interjected to opine that it's a dumb trivia question when rthe answer is a matter of opinion. She and I agreed that althought it was a dumb question, the answer practiacally qualified as a fact.

Here's hoping it gets downgraded back to opinion someday.

He was the subject of a "real sports" documentary recently about his affliction, and I guess that's part of it. Also, I think because that counter goes by percentages, the fewer web pages that list Mackey Sasser's name means more hits when they search for it at a place where his name appears several times.

Not sure how Papelbon gets a hit, but it's probably because someone swiped some content from here on a page that also lists his name. I'm certain he's getting lots of searches overall, so a small % comes here

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 13 2006 10:46 AM

I can't explain the Papelbon thing either. I tried Google and AltaVista to see if any Papelbon references are found on MBTN.net, and got nothing. I wonder which search engine led the searcher to your site?

I also Googled Mackey Sasser. His UMDB page came up as the third choice on page 1, and the page listing all Mets catchers came up on the second page of results. The MBTN 1-10 page landed on the fourth page of results.

Chalk that one up to nervousness.

Here's the line that I didn't like: "Willie came from the Yankees and brought the winning tradition."

Why would that be nervousness? Camden Yards opened 14 years ago, when Wright was 9 years old.

Lightning Rod
One New York columnist cited a picture on the cover of Tuesday's New York Post of a bare-chested Alex Rodriguez sunbathing in Central Park and asked Yankees GM Brian Cashman why A-Rod seems to make "poor decisions.'' Cashman came back with a strong defense (stronger than the defense A-Rod has shown lately), saying, "There's a mentality toward him that isn't right. Central Park is one of the great landmarks where you go and take your shirt off. So why can't he? Because he makes $252 million?''

Cashman went on to wonder why Mets third baseman David Wright gets positive publicity while lately A-Rod's seems all negative, despite the two having similar years. "He's having the same season as David Wright," Cashman said. "He's not getting the same love because of the money he makes. Bottom line.''

A-Rod (.282, 20 HRs, 68 RBIs) makes $25.2 million compared with Wright (.317, 21, 77), who is making $374,000. For those without a calculator, that's 1/67th of what A-Rod makes.

Cashman continued, "This guy doesn't get put in jail. He does good work with charity. He doesn't stay up late carousing. He doesn't inflame anything politically. He's a good citizen. So what's the difference? It's the money.''

A-Rod, who lives a block from the park, joked, "It was a modeling shoot.... No, it's my backyard. I was just lounging with my daughter and my wife.''
