Sept. 21,2001 Mets v. Braves - on NOW!

It's only been half a season without him, but sometimes you forget just how strong Piazza was.

Sadly, it's been a while since he has been that strong. He was a shell of his former self the last season or so.

I don't think I was ever as emotional as that night from watching a sporting event.......

Damn good to hear Fran again.

Disagree 100%. He is just as strong as he used to be, as has been clearly shown up to and including this year.

He's just not as quick with the bat speed as before.

Are you really waxing poetic about Fran? Getting rid of him was hard-earned and well-deserved.

Oh I liked Fran, yeah he was a total homer and a good employeee for MSG but at least IMO he never talked down to the listener....and he was funny....

Me and Cooby loved fran.

Me too - from the opening ceremony to the way it ended, it was a very emotional night...

the Piza homer is still just amazin, fran saying "arms extended" is a joy.

Impressive. There were four run-scoring plays in the entire game, and they managed to miss one as they edited the game into a 3 hour TV spot. Most impressive.

I'm not usually one who feels the need to attend every "event" game - but I decided on the afternoon of that game that I had to be there that night. So I called a connection and got a last minute ticket and rushed to the stadium in time for the game but too late to meet a large bunch of the (old) forum who were gathering prior to game time - although I did manage to catch up with Dickshot, Sponge/Farmer Ted, KC, and even meet Ambler (oldies know who I'm talking about) for the first and only time as he had flown in from California for the game.

What I remember from that night:

- Being in field level seats and the only thing I could hear during the pre-game 'moment of silence' were the flag-ropes on the top of the stadium flapping in the wind four decks above me. I had never heard 40K people that quiet before ... the silence was deafening.

- Thinking that - in Shea Stadium of all places - the stocky middle-aged guy walking up the aisle towards me must get kidded that he looks like Ron Swoboda a lot. As he came closer and eventually turned into my row and plopped down in the seat next to me I realized ... it WAS Ron Swoboda!!

- I've never been a big Liza fan but she was at her brassy/sassy best and the rousing 'New York, New York' was just what was needed at that point after all the solemn activities earlier. Yeah we were mourning - but we're still here!

- Thinking that the result of the game was secondary to everything else and in a way it was enough that we were just playing ... except that after all the problems during that season we had managed to work our way back into the fringes of a pennant race and godammit we needed this fucking game!! So by the later innings the fact that we were playing again suddenly wasn't enough anymore!

- That there was a whole lot of emotion riding on the big guy's (nod to Fran) HR. I'm sure most will tell you that they knew it was gone as soon as he hit it but I wasn't - and with Andruw out there I don't even consider it a hit until I see it bounce at least twice.

I didn't have MLB gamecasts back then, I didn't even have a computer, so I listened to the game as best I could on AM radio desperately trying to tune in amid the static. There were times when I didn't know whether there'd be baseball again so the need to hear that game was strong.

One of my personal favorite posts ever came from this one (lost in the EZ Crash but still available on a floppy disc I can't read anymore).

It was called "Did Piazza Touch Third Base?" and described my reaction to the HR -- jumping up and down, then landing on a beer bottle in the aisle, nearly falling down the stairs but righting myself only to step on the same bottle a second time and wind up sprawled horizonally across three of those hard metal box edges at the waists of people I didn't know but who were happy to have me there.

I remember the long line to get in, being genuinely moved at the ribbon in the skyline atop the scoreboard, and thinking what did Jay Payton think mnow that Liza was singing with her arm around him, probably "Get me the F outta here!!!!"

The game was taking place at the same time as the America: Tribue to Heroes telethon (was broadcast simultaneously on CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX), which had a lot of good artists that I wanted to see (Bruce, Neil Young, Vedder, Petty, et al.), so I was flipping between the game and the telethon. Surreal, certainly, to go between the songs and the Mets, back in New York.

Game was carried nationally (on ESPN?) so seeing it on SNY was the first time I got to hear Howie broadcasting it.

It was carried nationally; I know because I was able to see it too. I think it was on TBS, but I'm not sure.

FK, that must have been eerie. I wasn't at that game, but the only thing I experienced that might be comparable to that silence was on my college campus after it was announced that John Kennedy had been shot.

Hearing the flag ropes flapping - an all-time great word picture.

Thanks,

Saw it in Virginia, and called Piazza's shot to my Brave-fan buddy.

Well not so much called it as had this exchange.

Buddy: Piazza's getting old isn't he?
Me: Well, maybe, but these days all he does is hit home runs to tie or win games. He's great in these spots.
B: Yeah, sure, ok, rig---
Mike: Kaboom.

The timing was absolutely perfect. I can't imagine having actually been there.

It's fun to watch the game again but so bloody annoying that SNY cuts to TV Ad's every 5 minutes, oh and Joe Morgan is doing the game.

No Bobby - don't put in Mando!

Sorry - just a gut reaction.
