Poor old Czech bird has always had her problem with malapropisms.

Benjamin Orr (1947-2000) was the bass guitar player and one of the vocalists for the New Wave band The Cars. He was born Benjamin Orzechowski on September 8, 1947 in Lakewood, Ohio to Russian and Czechoslovakian parents. He grew up in Cleveland, and dropped out of high school to pursue music full time in a local band, The Grasshoppers. Unlike many other musicians' families, his parents were both singers and actively supported his musical endeavors. He became proficient in several instruments including the guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and drums, yet his talents in The Cars were mostly in playing the bass and lead vocals for several of their most popular hits, including "Just What I Needed", "Let's Go", and "Drive".

By the mid-70's Orr was working in a Boston night club band, Cap'n Swing, with other members including future Cars frontman Ric Ocasek and guitarist Elliot Easton. When the group broke up in 1975, the three of them joined up with the other two members to form The Cars by 1976.

With several top hits and multi-platinum albums under his belt for his work with The Cars, Orr in 1986 issued his only solo project, The Lace, where he co-wrote all music and lyrics, and included one Top-40 hit, "Stay The Night." The album had a very familiar rhythm and feel of The Cars but was also free of Ocasek's frequently cryptic lyrics.

After the break up of The Cars, Orr as well as the other members pursued solo work. From 1998 he led three bands, including Orr, The Voices of Classic Rock, and Big People.

In April 2000 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, yet continued to perform in concerts with his all-star band, Big People, at summer music festivals and state fairs. He also reunited with all the former members of The Cars for the only time in Atlanta, Georgia for an interview used in a Rhino Records video and DVD of a German concert performed in 1978, "The Cars Live".

His final scheduled appearance was on September 27, 2000, and he died at his home in Atlanta, on Tuesday night, October 3, 2000 at the age of 53, surrounded by his fiancee and Big People band members. The bands Orr and Big People still perform his classic Cars hits.

Benjamin Orr also played with Ric Ocasek as a duo, called Milkwood, which released one album, which is now regarded by Cars fans as a collectible.

The Byrds debut in the top ten!

Hanging on to the highest surprise... Talking Heads.

Lowest surprise is likely... the 0-2 Beach Boys.

Highest profile band on the outside looking in....maybe the Smiths, ranked as best ever by a British magazine or two. Also sitting out so far are near-first-tier grunge-era acts like Soundgarden and Jane's Addiction, as well as contemporary British invaders like Oasis, Blur, and the Stone Roses. How about ZZ Freaking Top?

I'm surprised this band hasn't been taken yet, since you could argue they're one of the two or three most popular rock bands recording today.

Green Day wants to rock. and they challenge AC/DC.

I thought I once read that at one point the Ventures sold more records in the 60's than anyone else but the Beatles. It was a big trivia answer at the time.
And I would have thought the (gasp) Jackson 5 would have been on one of the lists.
EDIT: Is the list just limited to rock, rather then all genres? If so, maybe the J5 are more "pop". And that would also tend to exclude big-selling groups like the BeeGees (disco) and Earth, Wind and Fire(soul/ pop/ urban? whatever).

Later

sharpie
Jul 27 2006 03:34 PM

By Edgy Edict, groups have to play instruments, so no vocal groups like Jackson 5.

The inclusion of Parliament and Bob Marley and the Wailers answers your second question.

The is no edict. Enough. If a majority vote of participants feel that vocal groups belong, fine.

I doubt that would happen. The only groups with no instrument players are acappella groups and there are few of them in rock & roll. For the Temps, the Tops and the other great Motown bands, the lineups changed, but someone played the instruments so the rule is pretty arbitary IMHO.

Any thought of maybe capping the # of bands? We're already at 63.

Just an idea.

Willets Point
Aug 01 2006 02:58 PM

My idea - and I was going to propose this but decided not to since there was enough griping about the BLC already - is to cap the BLC at 100. At that point we'd just challenge up within those bands. If we reach a point where all 100 bands cannot challenge higher (or don't want to) then I figured we could let anyone who wants to introduce a new band at the point do so, but they can only challenge a band with zero victories. If every band in the 100 has at least 1 victory then the BLC is locked and forever more we know who the greatest 100 bands are.

Edgy DC
Aug 01 2006 03:02 PM

All good ideas.

cooby
Aug 01 2006 03:32 PM

I am going to add two new bands, both of which I am sure everybody is familiar with and will like, and use probably one of my old ones. That'll get us up to 65

Rockin' Doc
Aug 01 2006 07:32 PM

I'm glad someone put an end to the madness. Elster88, metirish, and I never resigned. We simply stated that the entire BLC wasn't as much fun as it had been in the past. We likely wouldn't sponsor new bands in the future, but we would defend with the bands we had if challenged by others.

Willets Point
Aug 01 2006 09:57 PM

Well that was just my madness.

If you liked the 100 band idea, maybe you'll like my next proposal too. Lets get through the rest of the rotation to metirish and then put the BLC on hiatus for September and October as we focus our energy on the pennant race and playoffs. Then we can return to the BLC with renewed energy and excitement in November.

metirish
Aug 01 2006 09:58 PM

I like that idea....

Rockin' Doc
Aug 01 2006 10:10 PM

That sounds like a good idea. I hope we will all be preoccupied with Mets baseball to deal with the BLC until after the World Series.

Edgy DC
Aug 02 2006 03:36 AM

Also gives us plenty of non-pressure time to familarize ourselves to some extent with the catalogs of bands we are less than intimate with.

If we dare, we can even fess up now what bands are on our short lists, to give peeps a chance to get to know them (but also a chance to beat us to them.

For the record, as long as Fleetwood Freaking Mac is unclaimed, I'm not buying that we're out of competitive bands. Damn the lies.

Willets Point
Aug 02 2006 09:56 AM

This is my list of bands I think should join the BLC before I'd consider it complete. Obviously I'm not going to sponsor them all but this could strike a spark for someone else. I put an asterix next to the bands I do plan to sponsor but if someone takes them first, so be it.

Cracker
Crosby, Stills & Nash
The Everly Brothers

Me too (as far as the secret springing). I can think of a bunch of other bands not on Willets' list that should be there (though I am considering one of the bands that are there -- although I guess I'll be waiting til November to do so -- which is also okay).

Edgy DC

My mental shortlist has about four bands also on Willets' list, but --- not an edict here --- I'm sketchy about rap acts taking us outside of our charter.

Yep.

Again, I feel like there has to be some commercial success for this thing to make any sense. What makes The Specials, who nobody has ever heard of, better than Cracker, who had a couple of hits (and who I love, but have no business being on this list), or better than the Police, who have had both critical and commercial success? Musicianship? Bullshit, because then guitar wankers and prog bands would be higher on this list. "Songwriting"? Says who? There are too many variables. I agree that this got too big, and too complicated.

But we're trying to take back from the hit machine that tells us one band is better than another, not kowtow to it.

I'm somebody. Their legacy is quite huge. I'm sure the Police and Cracker would agree.

Some bands not included that were huge for a time at least, in either the US or the UK:

Abba, Sex Pistols, Soundgarden, Grand Funk Railroad, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Motley Crue (with or without the umlauts), Metallica, Herman's Hermits, Tommy James and the Shondelles, the Moody Freaking Blues, Simple Minds, The Cult, KeeeISS!!, Jane's Addiction, Men at Work (a favorite of Ms Met), Hall and Oates (actually a band and not merely a duo), Alabama, ZZ Muddahumping Top, the Yardbirds, the Spin Doctors, Hootiepatootie, Oasis, Blur, the Hothouse Flowers, Supertramp, Styx, the Black Crowes, the Monkees, and Culture Club.

Yes, but sketchily so, as, like The The, they've mostly been a solo act in the studio, but a band act on the road. Voters could hold that against them --- since studio records are what we're judging by --- when voting against an honestly collaborative outfit.

JD - No unilateral decision was made. I made no decision, I made no rule, I made a PROPOSAL. Other people liked it but I don't think anything's decided yet. We can put it to vote if you like. If accepted, Cooby, Seawolf1, Olerud Owned, Lenny Harris, Lundy, Rotblatt, & Metirish will take their turns and then we'll take a break until November.

VS - Please challenge with the Monkees, but you'll have to wait until your turn. I didn't make that rule, but the majority prefer that sponsors take turns introducing and challenging with bands.

Edgy DC
Aug 04 2006 10:49 AM

I found it.

Train stop, wet day
El train to Shea
Please pitch John Pacella
John winds, John throws
Pitch flies, hat goes
I loved John Pacella

Dug how his hat couldn’t stay on
His disco mullet hair
He’d pick it up, the ump said play on
Strange how much I’d care

Every fifth day I would see him pitching on the mound
He was from Brooklyn and I’d read he had good stuff
Other people booed him, said he was lacking control
My uncle told me that the hat thing’s not enough

One day I heard
Screams from some turd
“Please trade John Pacella!”
I thought, “Screw him,
I’ll undo him,
For tearing down my fella.”

I tore into this jerk with pure hate
A rage of just ten years
As John’s pitches failed to catch plate
They led me off in tears

Then one night, I saw him on TV
Eight Is Enough, they even showed him at the park
I was beside myself, they said his name, I could did not see
That both the show and he would soon jump o’er the shark

John was traded
Inn'cence faded
They made my man a Yankee
Train stop, train goes
Boy screams, “This blows”
Young Edgy was cranky

Control would his whole life elude him
The longhair with the hat
I cheered Pacella, others booed him
I always will have that

I guess I'm remembering it wrong, but I recall Edgy entered the above parody of "Bus Stop" in the parody challenge and I thought a number of people claimed they never heard of the song and Edgy went into a rant of it being a big hit with lots of airplay and what's wrong with you people.
