MP3 Players

With the semester winding down, I am toying with the idea of using my newly acquired piddling amount of technological acumen and putting it to some use. I'm thinking about getting an MP3 player, but I'm trying to figure out the answers to these questions -

Do I want one?
Do I need one?
What do I need to know about them?
Are they worth it?
Are they going to be overtaken by a newer, better technology as soon as I buy one?
Can you hook one up to your car radio?

Do I want one? how should i know?
Do I need one? probably not, an ipod or a cd-player capable of playing cd's with mp3's on them are both better choices
What do I need to know about them?
Are they worth it? not in my opinion, get a cd-player with a radio to listen to met games that can also play mp3 cds
Are they going to be overtaken by a newer, better technology as soon as I buy one? they already have been
Can you hook one up to your car radio? sure, the same way you can hook up anything else with a nearphones plug, they make plugs with a tape at the other end that u shove into your car's tape deck

iPod is a better bet.

Mole - why do you say so?

My thought is that an MP3 player would be better because I already own the music, so I wouldn't have to re-purchase it. Can you download from a CD to an iPod? Do you need a Mac for it, or can you do it from a PC?

An iPod is an mp3 player. It's just the most expensive, most well-known name brand mp3 player; kinda like Xerox, or Kleenex. There are plenty of other options out there.

The first thing to consider is size. Do you want to store thousands and thousands of songs and have them at your disposal at all times? Then you're going to want to start with the 20 GB players. If you'd like something a little smaller, and don't need to have every song ever written with you at all times, then some of the 5 GB players are fine. I'm a big fan of the Creative Zen; I've had my 20GB player for years, and I'll probably upgrade to the newest version of my current player this winter. The Zen Micro is good; light, compact, and 5 GB is plenty of space.

Scarlett, I found this site to be quite helpful in researching the various brands, features, and options available in mp3 players. There are a multitude of companies that make quality mp3 players and numerous sites for buying music. Most mp3 players will let you record music from CD's.

Best of luck in your search for the best mp3 player for you.

I'm the thousands and thousands of songs type -- and I have already added a lot of my CDs -- close to 3000 songs and growing.
