IGT Friday 7-28-06 Pedro Returns Mets @ Braves

SteveJRogers
Jul 28 2006 05:25 PM

I like this from 4/28:

]Thats not hyperbole. This is as big as a certain series in April 20 years ago this week. A time to make a stand and put that shadow of doubt in Atlanta's mind that the streak will end this YEAR!

ITS OUR DAMN TIME!
Metellenium Year 2006!

Where do you find the time?

SteveJRogers
Jul 28 2006 06:11 PM

Got a trusty Excel and a trusty browser, probably do the numbers on Tuesday for the Month-By-Month breakdowns, shouldn't be more than an hour or so

By the way, looking at my record, I think I should reserve IGT starts for "meaningless games!" I may have to go down to the Norfolk Forum for more IGT seasoning!

SteveJRogers

1-1 as my old moniker and 6-5. Okay, over .500 but not something I feel CAHN-fident giving myself the start down the stretch and in October!

Undefeated:
CF 3-0
Edgy 2-0
Hillbilly 2-0
A Boy Named Seo 1-0
GYC 1-0
OlerudOwned 1-0
Rotblatt 1-0

Duan, Abogdan, Rockin' Doc, The Old Mole all at 0-1 and Willets at 0-2 are looking for their first IGT win

There have been times when this stupid Comcast blocks out 11 because of ignorance- just going by the usual weekly lineup, but theyve been very good the last few years.
I guess they are sick of hearing my complaints.

I disagree that these games are as important as the ones earlier in the season.

Continuing to gain a psychological edge is nice, but the standings come first. The earlier games meant more on both counts.

Now let's win, or all is lost.

There may be more important ones down the line, but I certainly hope not.

The CPF farted in the general direction of my Game Thread Mojo suggestion. I thought it added some pizazz and excitement, mixed stuff up and probably woulda been directly responsible for several 8 or 9 game winning streaks so far.

Pedro just got his ass kicked there. Welcome back, Amigo.

It had to have been a consideration.
They may have left it up to him.

A McCann sac fly gives the Braves the lead, 3-2.

And Francouer doubles in A.Jones.

4-2--
LoRoch moves Francouer to third with a high sac fly to Beltran.

Pedro finally gets out of the 1st as Langerhans lines out hard to center.

Tuff start for the ace.

I admire that the Mets scored in consecutive innings there. Often it seems this group does significant damage in one inning and for lack of a better term "coasts"

I'd also guess that a good percentage of all games are won with a single inning better than the opponent's total, but with the Mets as capable as theyare, I'd like to see more innings in which they score anywhoo.

Well, it is kinda big taking the 1st game in any series.

If there was even a hint of pressure (The Braves/Turner Field and all), its no longer a factor.
Braves can reel off the next two and just be turnin their wheels in the sand.

It wasnt a HUGE game-if we lost we are okay--but I was a big win in that sense.

I felt no pressure, no sense of foreboding, and no sense of threat from the Braves. I just didn't have any expectation that the Mets would fold or the Braves would rear up from out of nowhere. In fact the Braves seemed listless and defeated. Kind of like it used to be for another team when playing at Turner Field.....the Mets.

Love this, that was the largest crowd in ATL Brave history!

Hey Atlanta, I like the fact that you think this is a big series and all, and quite encouraging for future seasons, but reverse the two teams, I'd wager you'd be stretching to say 33 thousand show up at Shea.

Its a Friday night, late July, you are barely on the cusp of the Wild Card race, let alone the divisional race and THATS the biggest crowd of the year?

Lets do a comparison

2004, the Mets fancied themselves as being in a race at this same time and played the Braves in a weekend set at Shea before heading to Montreal and back to Atlanta for the series that ended Jim Duquette and Art Howe's tenure at Shea

At conclusion of games of July 25, 2004
Eastern Division
W L Pct. GB Streak Last 10
Atlanta Braves 52 45 .536 -- W-3 7-3
Philadelphia Phillies 52 46 .531 0.5 W-2 6-4
Florida Marlins 48 50 .490 4.5 L-3 3-7
NEW YORK METS 47 50 .485 5.0 L-3 3-7
Montreal Expos 37 61 .378 15.5 W-4 6-4

Mets got swept that night and drew 33,166 and 32,542 respectivly for those two games. If fans see a team as a pretender, even if management thinks its a pretender, they are going to treat the team as a pretender.

I dunno. I still think this team has a lot of fight in them.
They just may not have the horses to pull it off, but they've always managed to throw a 50-20 stretch in there somewhere whenever someone has counted them out. Too late for 50-20 I realize, but 35-10 would be hard to fight off. Stepping on their throats in game 1 just makes the odds of them getting off a run like that a little tougher.

Tough to call a game w/a 12 game lead a BIG win, but it's a semi-big one because of the above and because Pedro shook off the dust and got off the deck.

This story's been told many times before, but when Cone was first in NYC and still relatively unknown he'd get invited to appear at Bar Mitzvah's and Temple by New Yorkers who thought his name was Cohen.
He's also Irish - I believe he said it was originally O'Cone - and it's possible that the C-O-N-E spelling is one of those American corruptions of European spelling.
