Time to take out the garbage in Atlanta!
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 05:23 PM |
Wonder what the standings are for IGT starters...

Where do you find the time?
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 06:11 PM |
Got a trusty Excel and a trusty browser, probably do the numbers on Tuesday for the Month-By-Month breakdowns, shouldn't be more than an hour or so
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 06:38 PM |
1-1 as my old moniker and 6-5. Okay, over .500 but not something I feel CAHN-fident giving myself the start down the stretch and in October!

Me too. I guess I'm just a tad overanxious....
metirish Jul 28 2006 07:14 PM |
Zvon the game starts at 7:30.....maybe you think it was a 7:10 start?
Zvon Jul 28 2006 07:18 PM |
whew--thanx metirish. There have been times when this stupid Comcast blocks out 11 because of ignorance- just going by the usual weekly lineup, but theyve been very good the last few years. I guess they are sick of hearing my complaints.
Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 07:20 PM |
I disagree that these games are as important as the ones earlier in the season.
Zvon Jul 28 2006 07:24 PM |
No doubt. We have a fantastic cushion right now. Whats the worst they can do here? There may be more important ones down the line, but I certainly hope not.
Zvon Jul 28 2006 07:26 PM |
Still, this is the Mets vs Atlanta and it's gonna make for some great baseball.
Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 07:33 PM |
David Wright is seven for his last seven with four homers versus Horacio Ramirez.

Mr. Wright dives and misses - Giles singles for Atlanta :(

ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 07:52 PM |

SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:00 PM |
Another hit, Larry scores and I think I started my final IGT for 2006

SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:03 PM |

Johnny Dickshot Jul 28 2006 08:03 PM |
The CPF farted in the general direction of my Game Thread Mojo suggestion. I thought it added some pizazz and excitement, mixed stuff up and probably woulda been directly responsible for several 8 or 9 game winning streaks so far.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:04 PM |
And we are out of the frame down by 2, 4-2 Bravos
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:04 PM |
It had to have been a consideration. They may have left it up to him. A McCann sac fly gives the Braves the lead, 3-2. And Francouer doubles in A.Jones. 4-2-- LoRoch moves Francouer to third with a high sac fly to Beltran. Pedro finally gets out of the 1st as Langerhans lines out hard to center. Tuff start for the ace.

Pedro with a double...damn.

SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:08 PM |

I'm starting to like that logic for the rest of the season. Full season implementation in 2007
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:08 PM |
Pedro with a double!

Okay one away, Giles on 2nd, brand new ballgame
ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 08:21 PM |
A nicely turned 5-4-3 DP ends the second. 4-4 after two.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:21 PM |
2 away
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:22 PM |
Check that, DP!
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:23 PM |

It is. nice. :) After a quick out Pedro walks that pesky Giles on 4 pitches. >:( And Martinez and the Mets get a big DP, 5-4-3. I say Pedro adjusts and goes 7. Whos with me?

KC Jul 28 2006 08:25 PM |

SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:25 PM |
Nady with a leadoff hit
Johnny Dickshot Jul 28 2006 08:26 PM |
I admire that the Mets scored in consecutive innings there. Often it seems this group does significant damage in one inning and for lack of a better term "coasts"

SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:28 PM |
Franco walks
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:28 PM |
Did Mr Franco kinda look like Rickey Henderson when he got that walk!?
Gwreck Jul 28 2006 08:29 PM |
I thought it was a great idea. I think there were a couple of people though who either didn't realize that was the policy or weren't online enough to start the IGTs for consecutive games.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:31 PM |
Runners at the corners

ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 08:32 PM |
X-Man scores on Porn Stash's sac. 5-4 Mets.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:37 PM |
Larry Jones up Bottom of 3rd, 5-4 Mets.
seawolf17 Jul 28 2006 08:37 PM |
Hey, I liked the idea, JD, but I never start IGTs, so I guess my vote didn't count.
ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 08:38 PM |
Cliff just misses making the warning track catch and Larry is on second with a leadoff double :(
seawolf17 Jul 28 2006 08:39 PM |
Cliff just kinda waved and missed at that fly ball... woulda been a neat catch, but he just wound up looking doofy.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:39 PM |
And Larry Jones slots in just under Mike Schmidt on my list of 3bmen I'd wish would no longer play ball against the Mets
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:40 PM |
AHHHNDrew out
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:40 PM |
All star Brian McCann up
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:41 PM |
I'll take that as well!
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:42 PM |
Hey Francouer, the Braves aren't the 69 Mets!
ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 08:42 PM |
A nice catch by Beltran ends the inning, stranding Larry at second :)
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:42 PM |
McCann pops out to Val and Beltran handles Francouers liner to center nicely and makes the grab.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:43 PM |
And you...
metirish Jul 28 2006 08:46 PM |
Gary talking about how he just doesn't get Nascar.....I'm with him.

ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 08:47 PM |

Count me in.
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:47 PM |

Me three. LoDuca draws the walk. Beltran, who before tonight has homered in the last 4 contests vs Atlanta, is up.
Willets Point Jul 28 2006 08:48 PM |
Yikes! I just got home and tuned in. 4 runs in the first for Pedro. Is he okay? Did he settle down? Is he still in the game? Did it just make him pissed and pitch dominantly afterwards?
metirish Jul 28 2006 08:49 PM |
Cool bit of info.....where did you get that from?
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:50 PM |
Ramirez walks Beltran....
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:50 PM |
Yup, just rust I assume, still in and settled down a bit. Laboring somewhat though, my guess is he's done after the 5th
Zvon Jul 28 2006 08:52 PM |

NY Post. Also says Wright is 7 for 10 with 4 homers vs Ramirez for his career. 7 for last 7, with the 4 homers. This is the first time the Brave pitcher has faced the Mets this season however.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 08:52 PM |
51 pitches for Pedro
seawolf17 Jul 28 2006 08:53 PM |
Always nice to get into the bullpen in the fourth inning of the first game of the series against a key divisional rival.

1-1 coiunt

I was reading today where Brian Jordan thinks they can catch the Mets.....Chipper was more realistic though....

Wright spanks one to center but Andrough is there.

Post has Giles and Francouer saying the same thing. Big talk from a team thats just a dot in the Mets rear view mirror. Let em flap their jaws. 1-2-3 inning for Pedro. After 4 its 5-4 Mets.
metirish Jul 28 2006 09:03 PM |
Keith talking about how he read today in USA Today about the Mets sending Lastings, Heilman and Sanchez to the A's for Zito, he didn't get to finish his thought but he did say he couldn't understand that trade proposel.......nor would I.
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 09:03 PM |
Foul Tip K and we are through 4 5-4 Mets
Zvon Jul 28 2006 09:08 PM |
..hands off Sanchez! Thats the first ive heard his name mentioned. The way the Mets have treasured their bullpen they cant be thinking of moving Sanchez.
metirish Jul 28 2006 09:10 PM |
The guys are talking about Matsui and Gary says that he's out with a bad back, claims Kaz said he hurt it taking the bus rides in the minor leagues....talk about fragile.

SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 09:13 PM |
ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 09:14 PM |
In his Shooting from the Lip column last Sunday, Lupica quipped that Valentin's grand slams kind of take the sting out of losing Matsui, don't they?
ScarletKnight41 Jul 28 2006 09:15 PM |
Pedro pitches a 1-2-3 5th.
metirish Jul 28 2006 09:15 PM |
On his last swing it seems Chipper is hurting......
seawolf17 Jul 28 2006 09:16 PM |
Who is this Matsui character? I vaguely remember the Mets having some guy who homered to lead off three consecutive seasons, but other than that, never heard of him.
Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 09:16 PM |
I can't find any report on that.
Zvon Jul 28 2006 09:17 PM |
Ha! They certainly do. Not that there was any sting or we lost him even. Chipper grounds out and he's one hurtin dude. Hope they pull him.

metirish Jul 28 2006 09:18 PM |

Keith talks a lot about Whitey Herzog during games, didn't he run Keith out of St.Louis?....
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 09:22 PM |
Betemit is at third now
SteveJRogers Jul 28 2006 09:24 PM |

Not so much "run out of town" as trying to restructure the clubhouse. My guess is Keith understands why the move had to be made at the time
Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 09:25 PM |
In the end, it worked out for him. Whitey is a fascinating figure and good subject for gabbing.
Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 09:26 PM |
Villareal has really done his job here. I think he leads the NL in relief wins. Let's not extend that lead.

A huge "One that got away" from that early 70's era. Never mind the dealing of Otis, Ryan, Singleton, ect that was probably the biggest loss the organization had (well next to Hodges dying)

Good points guys, I don't think I have ever heard Keith say anything bad about Herzog when talking about him..

I report he's gonna be laid up for at least this series. Unconfirmed, of course.

Old Friend, Tyler Yates on the mound for the Braves
Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 09:51 PM |
This hurts the Braves at two levels. Chipper's absence is an obvious detriment, but they were also dangling Betemit --- who they now need as Chipper's replacement --- as the bait for a deadline deal.

Ill be totally amazed if he plays at all this weekend. Maybe thats just wishful thinking on my part. He looked in BAD shape there on the bench. Dag! Wright Ks after working a long at bat off Ray. Beltran was trying awfully hard to steal second the whole time. Ray effortlessly gets Nady to wiff and its up to Wags to bring it home.

Edgy DC Jul 28 2006 10:18 PM |
OK, Wags, make it so.

It's satisfying to win when your ace gets himself in hole like that, I guess. As you work toward post-season, you want to know not everything has to go perfect for you to win. Stay healthy. Stay loose.

Well, it is kinda big taking the 1st game in any series. If there was even a hint of pressure (The Braves/Turner Field and all), its no longer a factor. Braves can reel off the next two and just be turnin their wheels in the sand. It wasnt a HUGE game-if we lost we are okay--but I was a big win in that sense.
old original jb Jul 28 2006 10:37 PM This one felt very different from past Mets games at the Ted |
I felt no pressure, no sense of foreboding, and no sense of threat from the Braves. I just didn't have any expectation that the Mets would fold or the Braves would rear up from out of nowhere. In fact the Braves seemed listless and defeated. Kind of like it used to be for another team when playing at Turner Field.....the Mets.

Love this, that was the largest crowd in ATL Brave history! Hey Atlanta, I like the fact that you think this is a big series and all, and quite encouraging for future seasons, but reverse the two teams, I'd wager you'd be stretching to say 33 thousand show up at Shea. Its a Friday night, late July, you are barely on the cusp of the Wild Card race, let alone the divisional race and THATS the biggest crowd of the year? Lets do a comparison 2004, the Mets fancied themselves as being in a race at this same time and played the Braves in a weekend set at Shea before heading to Montreal and back to Atlanta for the series that ended Jim Duquette and Art Howe's tenure at Shea At conclusion of games of July 25, 2004 Eastern Division W L Pct. GB Streak Last 10 Atlanta Braves 52 45 .536 -- W-3 7-3 Philadelphia Phillies 52 46 .531 0.5 W-2 6-4 Florida Marlins 48 50 .490 4.5 L-3 3-7 NEW YORK METS 47 50 .485 5.0 L-3 3-7 Montreal Expos 37 61 .378 15.5 W-4 6-4 Mets got swept that night and drew 33,166 and 32,542 respectivly for those two games. If fans see a team as a pretender, even if management thinks its a pretender, they are going to treat the team as a pretender.

I dunno. I still think this team has a lot of fight in them. They just may not have the horses to pull it off, but they've always managed to throw a 50-20 stretch in there somewhere whenever someone has counted them out. Too late for 50-20 I realize, but 35-10 would be hard to fight off. Stepping on their throats in game 1 just makes the odds of them getting off a run like that a little tougher. Tough to call a game w/a 12 game lead a BIG win, but it's a semi-big one because of the above and because Pedro shook off the dust and got off the deck.

I'm not, but for whatever reason Coen is a big name in Tipperary, of course we are all related...

Just wondering, when did Andruw Jones start chewing on his teeshirts?
Frayed Knot Jul 28 2006 11:08 PM |
This story's been told many times before, but when Cone was first in NYC and still relatively unknown he'd get invited to appear at Bar Mitzvah's and Temple by New Yorkers who thought his name was Cohen.

Yup. Have you seen the Jon Stewart video I posted? Stewart's expression after he listens to Stevens is hilarious.
ScarletKnight41 Jul 29 2006 01:17 PM |
Not only did I see the video, but I saw the show when it first aired. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are staples in our household.
Elster88 Jul 29 2006 01:22 PM |
With the best talk show hosts, their facial responses when they hear something (for example an "I can't believe what that moron just said that" face) are as funny as their one-liners. Jon Stewart is no expression. Do you know the specific expression I'm thinking of? It cracks me up every time I watch that youtube clip that I posted.
