I usually put these up early in the season, but 2006 has been too much fun. It's astounding how the team looks to hemmorage veteran starting pitching at the end of the year. That's Wags. According to Cot's baseball contracts, Chavez and Castro remain in the Mets' control next season, though it seems like they shouldn't. I guess they've clocked the time in years, but not in games on the roster.

Don't think Zambrano's an automatic FA either. His debut in June of 2001 gives him only 5+ years in as of the end of '06. Of course they could very well cut him loose and make him one since his availability (not to mention his desireability) for next year is already in question.

with the X out of the picture, i wonder who will take floyd's place next year. it would be nice to have floyd another year, possibly to placehold for carlos gomez. but i guess that wont happen. who will join milledge and beltran in the outfield in 2007?

I wouldn't necessarily rule out Floyd, if he's willing to sign a one-, or maybe two-year deal.

I doubt that. (You may be thinking of Franco.) Valentin was on the retread pile. He wouldn't have had any leverage at all for a two-year deal.

It's not automatic, but the team can pick it up without his consent.

The story on the Glavine option is a little hazy: - he agreed to reduce this year's contract by $3mil - then he agreed to an option for next year with an extra $3mil either in the contract or in the buyout if it's not picked up The option itself has has both a club option at a particular level w/incentives and a player option at a different level. But the club option seemed very high (even considering the put-back $3mil) to the point where the team has to be tempted to NOT pick it up and, by the same token, the player option was quite low meaning Glvaine might reject it and hunt for a better deal elsewhere. What's likely to happen (this is Adam Rubin's take) is that, given the relationship between Glavine & the Wilpons, they'll reach an agreement somewhere between the two extremes and scrap the details of the option all together. This is all assuming that Glavine doesn't either: - keep sliding into the toilet to the point where Mr. 'Full Autonomy' decides he doesn't want him back - decide he wants to get back to Atlanta. Seems like a lot of trouble to me; going through all that trouble of concocting the options just to pay him the $3mil after the season instead of during it and then wind up ignoring the parameters that you just worked out.

Yeah, I wonder what that's all about, and what it all really means. I think, given the state of the two teams, Glavine would probably prefer to be in New York next year instead of Atlanta. But if Glavine doesn't start pitching better, he may not have that choice to make.

- I guess delaying when they pay the $3mil is just to help the NYM cash flow a bit. - And then the options were set-up so as to detail a way to get Glavine that $3mil back (either in the contract or via the buyout) - Then, by putting the option levels towards the extremes, neither side gets locked into anything they don't want, and they have enough trust in each other enough to where they'll either work something out or agree to part company on good terms.

Not to say anything about the Mets or Glavine specifically, or even baseball in general, but when it comes time to talk dollars in this world I think it's rare that what was said when everyone was nice and trusting actually happens.

August 8th Promoted Demoted Relief Pitchers Ring Schmoll At the time I laid them out, Bell and Owens were on the Mets. Knowing that Bradford was up for free agency, I looked for another righthander and Schmoll, with his big-league experience and ROOGyrific ways, seemed a natural. But yeah, Ring being up now and them being down puts him ahead of them at this point in time. Good point. Bradford, by the way, needs to get his first career at-bat in before the year is out. OK, looking back at the other thread. On August 9th we announced that Duaner Sanchez was placed on the 60-Day DL. Im going to assume he's ready to break camp in the Spring --- in one condition or another --- and that this has no bearing on the 2007 roster. Also that day, Ricky Ledee was added to the roster, and Anderson Garcia designated for assignment. Added to Free Agent List Claimed and Is Now an Ottawa Lynx Outfielders Relief Pitchers Ledee Garcia On August 10th, Michael Tucker was called up to replace an ailing Cliff Floyd, and he promptly donned a shiny undershirt. Added to Free Agent List Outfielders Tucker On the 19th, Dave Williams was called up. I think the Mets continue to control him next year, so I won't add him to the free-agent list. Both he and Perez are out of options next year, so, the way he's pitching, I've got to think he's given a reasonable chance to make the team if they don't get anybody new (which they will). Projected In Projected Out Starting Pitchers Williams Bannister A big trade with Cleveland nets us an asset with next season written all over him. Nonetheless, he's another free agent. Acquired from Cleveland and Added to Free Agent List Designated for Assignment and Now an Indianapolis Indian Relief Pitchers Mota J. Perez A big deal went down on the 27th. Acquired from Arizona Designated for Assignment and Traded to Texas Outfielders Green Diaz Milledge also went down around the same time. Most of the other moves have just been manevering, but a lot of these young pitchers are going to have to keep grinding just to stay in the mix, as the Mets could possibly pick up Tom Glavine's option, re-sign Steve Trachsel, and/or acquire a veteran pitcher or two. Priorities for the off-season look like (1) secondbase, (2) starter, (3) outfielder. I'd put (3) ahead of two, get some righthanded-batting reserve badass that can platoon with Chavez if Milledge doesn't perform. But I imagine the Mets will make pitching a high priority. The thing is that they're loaded with redundancy in the system at starting pitcher, while the outfield prospects continually peak at AA.

They had enough pitching this year to overcome the supposedly foolish decision to deal Kris Benson, followed by the designated five-man rotation stating only 86 of the team's first 141 games. A lot depends on whether they pick up Tom Glavine's option and/or re-sign Steve Trachsel. Edgy odds: Pick up Tom Glavine: 80% likely. Re-Sign Steve Trachsel: 40% likely. Both Pick up Tom Glavine and Re-Sign Steve Trachsel: 32% likely.

Didn't say they were. Juan Perez ended up with Indianapolis as part of a series of moves in conjunction with the Mota acquisition from Cleveland, but he didn't go to Cleveland's organization as some sort of payment. As I understand, he was designated for assignment, exposed to waivers, claimed by Pittsburgh, and assigned to Indianapolis.

I think I've got his right. Obviously Bannister could beat out Soler next spring, but, right now, I thik age and experience makes Soler the first option, if not necessarily the best. Gotay has two advantages, in that he's out of options and at least hit a little in 2004, which is more than Hernandez ever did. But Willie seems to like defensive strength up the middle, and Hernandez plays shortstop while Gotay seems to be exclusively tacked to second. It's probably close to 50/50 at this point. Things are shaping out nicely early in the offseason. Padilla is the most experienced and successful of those in line to grab the bullpen spot that opens, assuming he's healthy. But since this leaves only two lefties in the pen, it may be an opportunity for the likes of Blake McGinley, currently bringing it for the Mesa Solar Sox. Starting Pitchers O. One would think that with the Alou signing, the Mets position player roster is set for 2007. Presumably the only question would be whether Milledge or Johnson will be on the opening day roster (or both, if they go with 11 pitchers).

It will be interesting to see who the Mets decide will get part-time play here and who gets full-time play in AAA.

no, but i'm hoping they do, because I'd rather have another LH bat on the bench other than Chavez, who'll be used alot for defense and as a spot starter, than a 12th pitcher, like Standridge or Adkins, who'll hardly ever pitch meaningful innings. speaking of which, i'm hoping we can do better than Gotay in that slot. Its important to have a bat on the bench for late inning duty against good RHed setup guys and closers.

My more visually enhanced presentation also farms out Milledge for the time bieng, and I try to stay away from wishful thinking. If you'd rather have a batsman on your bench than an extra infielder or a twelfth pitcher, Abreu will probably get a look. It'd help his case enormously, however, if it could be determined that he can fake it in left here and there.

Wasn't this theory completely disproven by 2006? The Mets carried 12 relievers for the entire season save the first week. There were few unimportant innings, especially with a starting rotation that didn't go deep into games. Granted, Trachsel and Pedro won't be around next year but be it Zitor or Glavine or someone else to go with Maine, El Duque et al. they're still not exactly going to have a ton of innings-eaters in that rotation. I'd think that 12th pitcher is going to be pretty valuable, and his innings are going to be meaningful. ]speaking of which, i'm hoping we can do better than Gotay in that slot. It's just a projection. Given that Williams was re-signed and Pelfrey, Soler and Humber all have options, it seems most likely -- as of today -- that Williams will start the year as the number 5 starter.

Humber might make the team as a releiver/spot starter. I think Pelfrey only cracks the roster as a full-time starter, though.

i don't think they carry Humber, either, unless he wins the 5th SP slot. I would think they'd want both those guys to pitch every 5th day.

Well, no contract is going to guarantee someone's spot on the roster --- what you may have heard is that he has a deal which allows him to refuse assignment to the minors if he doesn't make the 25 out of ST or if they try to send him down later on. IOW, he' may have pledged marriage to the Mets for better but not for worse.
