In fact, the now legendary set -- featuring only two songs --- "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and a passionate 13-minute version of "Bad" --- was considered a failure by the band. As Bono climbed off the stage to dance with a fan, the rest of the band was upset that that he blew the time in which the band was to perform "Pride (In the Name of Love)." "One" vs. "Take Me to the River" Pretty close. Go with U2 for composing. "Bad (live)" vs. "Burning Down the House" U2. "Beautiful Day" vs. "Once in a Lifetime" The name of the winning band is Talking Heads. "Where the Streets Have No Name" vs. "Road to Nowhere" U2. "New Year's Day" vs. "Don't Worry About the Government" U2. "Until the End of the World" vs. "Wild Wild Life" U2. "I Will Follow" vs. "And She Was" U2. "Vertigo" vs. "Girlfriend Is Better" Tie. "Original of the Species" vs. "Psycho Killer" Talking Heads. Small arrangelment trumps the big one. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" vs. "Life During Wartime" Talking Heads. Great riff. U2 walks off with a 6.5-3.5 win. In retrospect, that's pretty similar to the ration of their catalog sizes.

Five of those minutes are the logistics of Bono climbing down two levels and the girl being dragged up one. Any poignancy of their brief dance must've been lost to the audience because he was surrounded by yellow shirted security folk. Then he smooches a bonodiction on two other girls on the way back.

One vs. Take Me to the River -- One of the most beautiful rock songs ever written vs. a very good cover. No contest. U2 Bad (live) vs. Burning Down the House -- Is it a particular live version? Or the Wide Awake in America version? No matter, U2 takes it. Beautiful Day vs. Once in a Lifetime U2. It's overplayed, but still a magnificent song. Where the Streets Have No Name vs. Road to Nowhere -- Streets is probably unbeatable. U2 New Year's Day vs. Don't Worry About the Government -- U2 Until the End of the World vs. Wild Wild Life U2, even though it's one of my favorite Talking Heads songs. I Will Follow vs. And She Was -- Tough loss for the Heads here. U2 Vertigo vs. Girlfriend Is Better -- Another tough loss. U2 Original of the Species vs. Psycho Killer Talking Heads Sunday Bloody Sunday vs. Life During Wartime -- "This is a song we sing, in the hopes that one day we may never have to sing it again." U2 It can be tough to be objective on certain songs if you've seen some of the songs performed live. Streets wins on pure merit -- live performances notwithstanding. Bruce may be the best live performer ever, but U2 doing Streets at Madison Square Garden may be both the single greatest concert moment I've ever seen and the single loudest concert moment ever. [/tangent] That being said, Original of the Speices performed live is magnificent. On record, if falls flat I think, and hence it loses to Psycho Killer. U2 takes the rest, winning 9-1.

Talking Heads held off the Beach Boys, Bob Marley & the Wailers and the Pretenders (plus someone else, can't remember) but U2 managed to just barely overtake them, 76-74. Hail, Lenny, now clean up your room.

I finally got around to watching that video of "Bad" at Live Aid. My brother-in-law gave me a concert recording of U2 from 1987 where Bono worked in a medley of Rolling Stones & Lou Reed songs into "Bad". Interesting to see he was doing that at least two year's earlier. According to WIkipedia, Bono actually noticed a girl getting crushed by the crowd and being unable to get security to notice, he went down himself. That's what led to the "dance" which looks more like a comforting hug to me. It was also fun to see Bono without his trademark glasses and the Edge without his trademark hat.
