Some one should tell Jose - first pitch double...

That lineup looks weak to me. But I still haven't been trained to think that Valentin is good.

Bloop hit to right for Milledge.

A drive down the left field line that bounced out of play in the corner for a ground rule double.

Another bloop hit, this one for Beltran, off the glove of the second baseman as he ran to his left.

Nice play from Nunez saving a double down the line throws out Wright.

I'm officially putting the fragile tag back on Floyd, in my own mind. He didn't even do anything on that play.

I like the quick answering back--but we really should get more than one out of this.

oh carp--what a play by Phils 3rd baseman Nunez off of Wright.

Floyd must have hurt himself on that play in the corner...Chavez in for him.
He pops out.

Rowand stranded at second after his one out double. Glavine gets Rollins and then Howard to fly out.

Still 3-1 Phillies with the top of the order due up for the Mets in the home half of the third.

I dont deny it.

Ugh--
Lastings with a nice diving effort but the ball wiggles out of his glove for a hit.
He really should have gotten Howard for the force at second, but he hurls the ball in like a madman and Reyes has to make his own dive to stop it, far wide of second base.

Glavine gets Coste to ground into the DP, 6-4-3.

Top of the order.

Today's mojo-shifting rally song provided by the Divinyls:

I love myself
I want you to love me
When Iīm feeling down
I want you above me
I search myself
I want you to find me
I forget myself
I want you to remind me
I donīt want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
I donīt want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no
Youīre the one who makes me happy honey
Youīre the sun who makes me shine
When youīre around Iīm always laughing
I want to make you mine
I close my eyes
And see you before me
Think I would die
If you were to ignore me
A fool could see
Just how much I adore you
I get down on my knees
Iīd do anything for you
I donīt want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
I donīt want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no
I want you
I donīt want anybody else
And when I think about you I touch myself
Ooh, oooh, oooooh, aaaaaah

Tough loss for Lieber. He really pitched pretty well. He got himself in trouble when he threw the ball away on Beltran's check swing grounder. He had retired 17 straight Mets up to that point.

We haven't a game since Monday where we haven't cried out for Duaner AND Xavier. It's as if their heads collided both diving for the same ball at the same time.

Honestly, we look a lot less dangerous and it's almost palpable.

Edgy DC
Aug 05 2006 11:54 PM

How do you see the bullpen shaking out right now?

I guess Willy has Heilman and Hernandez at equal status, probably reasoning (to himself at least) that he'll need Heilman's best at the end fo the year and, considering the team's cushion he'd better be as restrained as possible to demote him and undercut his cahnfidence.

But a few more self-destructive outings, and I'm strongly suspicious that it'll clearly be Hernandez in the eighth and Heilman in the seventh, and a few more after that and it'll be Hernandez in the eighth and Chadro Bradiciano in the seventh.

And there's also a strong argument that Bell or Pelfrey should be given a chance to auditon as Hernandez's partner in setting up Wagner.

There's probably a strong argument for Oliver.

Heilman got the job done today.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 06 2006 12:14 AM

Yeah, I think you got the basic idea: Give the 8th innings to Heilman until the lead shrinks to single digits or he gets better, or he gets killed.

Relief pitching is so enigmatic. It seems to me Duaner was this octopus with his arms gently supporting each of his fellow bullpenners: removing him upsets the whole balance of things. Oliver suddenly gets a leverage inning and surrenders a giant HR. Wagner looks like crap. Heilman looks like he knows he doesn't have anyone's faith. And no guarantee Sanchez will return to reclaim such a role, ever: It's all momentum, with talent, sure, and health.

So I don't trust obvious bullpen fixes that come at the moment you need them, and I do think it'd be ballsy and interesting to see what Maine or Pelfrey could do if they're given a chance.

Aug 06 2006 07:13 AM

Ring hasn't appeared yet. I'd like him to get some innings soon so that we can get an idea of how he'll fit into the equation.

Aug 06 2006 08:29 AM

Pedro Feliciano has shown some acceptably even splits

Vs. lefties:.256 / .278 / .372 // .650
Vs. righties: .263 / .358 / .375 // .733

Maybe he gets a broader role and Ring becomes the LOOGy.

NEW YORK -- Even before the injury to setup man Duaner Sanchez forced Willie Randolph to redo the bullpen, the manager spoke of using Darren Oliver in late-game situations, mostly as a means of preparing him for postseason duty, but also with a sense of testing the veteran left-hander who has prospered in long relief this season.

The plan backfired on Friday night, when Oliver entered the game in the seventh inning with the score tied at 3-3 and surrendered a home run to his first batter -- a left-handed batter -- David Dellucci. The Phillies scored in the ninth as well, when Ryan Howard, also a left-handed hitter, hit his 37th home run, against southpaw Pedro Feliciano.

The assignment Friday marked the second time this season Oliver has been asked to pitch later than the sixth inning with the score tied or with a margin of one run either way. In each instance he allowed a run.

A rundown of Oliver's seven "seventh or later" appearances follows:

April 7: In the Mets' fourth game, Oliver makes his first appearance and starts the ninth with the Mets leading, 9-3, against the Marlins in Miami. Three up, three down.

May 18: Oliver is summoned to start the eighth inning in St. Louis with the Mets trailing, 6-3. Three up, three down.

June 3: With the Mets trailing the Giants, 5-4, at Shea, Oliver starts and completes the ninth and allows a run on a single by Barry Bonds.

June 6: Oliver starts the eighth in Los Angeles vs. the Dodgers with the Mets trailing by three runs. He allows two hits and a walk but no runs and completes the inning.

June 20: Oliver works the ninth against the Reds at Shea with the Mets leading, 9-2. He faces four batters, allowing a hit.

June 21: With the Mets trailing the Reds by four at home, Oliver is assigned the seventh inning. Again, he faces four batters and allows one hit.

Aug. 4: With the Mets and Phillies tied at 3, Oliver is given the seventh inning. His first batter, David Dellucci, a left-handed hitter, provides the decisive run in what becomes a 5-3 Phillies victory.
