There is no joy in DC. The mighty Edgy is blacked out.

Edgy DC

Huge (for the first inning) K of Howard there.

Finish the job against Pat the Bat now.

From ESPNs Sunday night game?
That bites.

Phils threaten with a one out double by Dellucci and an Utley single off of Reyes glove, but Maine Ks the big Ryan Howard and gets Burrell to pop out--and it was a nice play by Reyes down the line in short left to end the threat.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 08:23 PM

Got 'em.

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 08:33 PM

Mets go 1-2-3 in the 1st.

Its really a bit odd not seeing Abreu in the middle of that Phils lineup.
He was there for soooooooooo long.

Maine sets the Phils down nicely,1-2-3 in the 2nd, notching his 2nd K of the game.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 08:37 PM

Go go!

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 08:37 PM

Yeah, they give up Abreu and the Mets Nady. That's about even.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 08:41 PM

There we go. A Metly hit.

Youse watching at home... does this Otter guy have good stuff or are the Mets just flailing?

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 08:44 PM

Valentin with the 1st hit for the Mets, a 2 out double ripped past Ryan Howard down the right field line.

But Chavez dribbles a grounder to second and thats the end of the 2nd.

(I was hoping to see Wright show his appreciation at being the new rich kid in town , but he dribbled out to the pitcher.)

Both pitchers look like they are pitching well, and making their pitches.

Edgy DC

I figure the bar gets ESPN. That's who is broadcasting this one, right?

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 09:00 PM

Hate to say this, but Mathieson looks particularly on his game.

Another quick inning for him,1-2-3.

Strikes out Reyes swinging to end the 3rd.

After watching Maine pitch the 4th, I have to say the same thing.
Not fantastic or overpowering stuff, but good pitches in great placement.

Howard did hit one hard but the other two outs were pop ups.

0-0 thru 3 and a half.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 09:03 PM

But we got a Lo Double to open the innng.

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 09:03 PM

LoDuca with a lead off double over Delluccis head in right.

Beltraan follows with a pop out to shallow right.
Delgado..........

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 09:04 PM

Its about time we started seeing Delgado park one......or two.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 09:05 PM

OK, two fat ones on for Mr. $55 Million.

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 09:07 PM

CarlosD walks.

Ugh---Wrights swingin thru stuff like hes not seeing the pitch.
Then he gets a curve ball up and watches it for a strike.
He shoulda spanked that curve for bein bad.

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 09:09 PM

And David does spank one!

Down the third baseline for a double and LoDuke comes in to score.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 09:09 PM

There 'tis.

We have a lead.

Three Met hits... all doubles.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 09:12 PM

Nice, second and third with Delgado scoring after the pitcher's throwing error.

Just get the run home Endy.

Zvon
Aug 06 2006 09:13 PM

WOW!
Mathieson gets Valentin to hit it back to him, and he throws high to 1st and Howard cant bring it down--it hits off his glove.

I think Ryan screwed up there, tho Mathieson will get the error.

Mets plate another as Delgado comes in--Wright and Val move up to 2nd and 3rd.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 09:14 PM

Walks. Bases loaded.

Show me the love, Lastings.

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2006 09:15 PM

Does it with a run-scoring single.

'Stings makes it 3-0. Cue the People.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 06 2006 09:15 PM

Mets get a gift. Valentin grounds to the mound, Mathieson throws high and everyone is safe.

Announcers goig on and on about Mathieson thrwoing it away, it was a little high and wide, but it should have been caught by Howard in my opinion. He was standing with his foot on the bag and the ball went off his glove. I think Howard "heard footsteps" with Valentin closing in and didn't concentrate on the catch. Not a good throw, but if I'm scoring, I would give the error to Howard.

Let's get some more runs while we have them on the ropes.

Chavez is walked.
Lastings lines a wicked line drive single up the middle, so hard only Wright can score.

...consider me a Milledge person.

Maine strikes out and Reyes ----

I agree- maybe even two errors there (one on each), one for Val being safe and one for allowing him to get to second. Howard didnt exactly scramble after that ball.

The Mets didn't invent the grand slam, but since the All Star break they seem to have perfected it.

HA!
yup-

After seeing a replay there I see Howard was hit pretty hard by Valentin crossing the bag......but still.

Hey, who cares, another Philly error opens up the floodgates.

Maine walks two with one out in the 5th- his pitches look like they are getting away from him.

But the Mets get out of it with a force play and a deep flyout off of Rollins bat.

Maine thru 6.
He looked like two different pitchers that inning-
Utley hit him hard and he walked Howard.
But then he settled down and struck out Burrell and Rowand.

Bradford was up in the bullpen.

ScarletKnight41

Royce Ring comes into the game, and on the first pitch coughs up a home run ball to Lieberthal.

8-1

Well, we put a finishing kick into two of the three teams jockeying for second behind us, and Florida followed their strong showing against us by losing three straight to the Dodgers.

The challenge now is to finish the seaon honorably while keeping the team covered the team in bubble wrap to keep any more of them from getting hurt.

]John Maine pitched six shutout innings in the Mets' 8-1 win against the Phillies. Maine has not allowed a run in each of his last three starts. He's the first rookie pitcher to do that -- while throwing at least six innings in each outing -- since the Brewers' Cal Eldred in August 1992. The last National League rookie with three straight scoreless starts of at least six innings was Orel Hershiser, who threw three straight complete-game shutouts for the Dodgers in July 1984. (Hershiser had one relief appearance -- on the Sunday before the All-Star break -- during that streak.)

I got home late and tuned in the game. I saw the score (8-1 at the time) but knew no details.
When Lastings came to bat, Morgan was off in never- never land talking about something not pertinent to the game. Viewers got no information about what Milledge had done so far in the game, either from the announcers (I use that term loosely) or from a graphic.
The whole ESPN crew was asleep - even the folks in the "truck".

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 07 2006 12:55 PM

I think Morgan gets at least some crap from the seamhead community because although a terrifically sound player from a sabermetric standpoint (outrageous value/position, good SB%, power, D, OBP) its obvious he accomplished all that without thinking about the same things they did: He kinda undermines their work.

I like Miller quite a bit -- and take my Joe with lotta salt, and enjoy them.

I actually enjoyed Joe during the WBC--he talked a lot about the mechanics of hitting and how it differed from team to team, which I found pretty interesting. Watching him during the regular MLB season was like getting dunked in cold water. He has a tendency to get fixated on something and talk about it to death.

Anyway, I don't mind watching him call other teams, but I don't want him near the Mets. Part of that is that I love our SNY crew, though. Tough act to follow.

Edgy DC
Aug 07 2006 02:06 PM

Agreed about Morgan. What he does best is talking about how to do what's going on out there --- batting, baserunning, and fielding.

On strategy he's usually loud and wrong.

On defending traditional prejudices in scouting and development, he's usually loud and wrong.

On knowledge of contemporary players, he's usually loud and wrong.

He made a great argument once about diving into first, that it's usually a really dumb play but there is a place for it. I imagined a conversation of him and Pete Rose debating it.

I think he can be an asset. But generally he's a liability.
