KTE - Florida Marlins August 1-3

Perhaps failure to Know our Enemy led to the loss? Woulda done the EEE yesterday but didn't realize it was missing. What's the timeframe for those things -- when do we go into "emergency" mode? 2 hours before gametime? 1 hour?

Anyway, the report:

This year:
The Marlins, with the win yesterday against the Mets are 50-56. That's 3rd place, 13.5 games back. They are 5 back in the wildcard standings, although there are 8 (!) teams ahead of them.

Recent Performance:
After going 18-7 in June, the Marlins came back to earth in July, going 14-15 in July. Recently, they took 2 of 3 from the Braves before dropping 3 of 4 to Philadelphia.

Lineup:
C - Miguel Olivo (R). 12-40-.295. Also a good throwing arm, caught 41% so far this year. 61 Ks and only 5 walks.

1B - MIke Jacobs (L) is having a nice first full season. 14-54-.289, also 30 doubles, .870 OPS.

2B - Dan Uggla (R) all-star and longshot ROY candidate. 16-61-.292.

3B - Miguel Cabrera (R) was not happy the last time he faced the Mets, getting plunked on the hip in obvious retaliation by Duaner Sanchez. 16-66-.326, .972 OPS.

SS - Hanley Ramirez (R) has come back to earth a little bit. Still projected as a future star to "build" the franchise around. 10-34-.269, 30 steals.

LF - Josh Willingham (R) we saw last night, is en fuego, 5 HRs in his last 5 games. 16-55-.263 for the year.

CF - Alfredo Amezaga (L) coverted infielder who still backs up there sometimes. 2-12-.267, with a .335 OBP. The regular leadoff hitter. 9 for 16 in stealing attempts.

RF - Jeremy Hermida (L) 5-22-.284. Not a great defensive outfielder.

Pitching Matchups:
Pelfrey vs. Scott Olsen (L)
Saw this last night. Perhaps worth noting that the Marlins are the first team that have seen Pelfrey twice.

Steve Trachsel vs. Rickey Nolasco (R) (9-6, 3.94)
Nolasco, a rookie, has been fantastic his last 3 starts: 3-0, 0.42 ERA in 21.2 innings, 10 H, 14 Ks. Those three starts were against Washington, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Nolasco last faced the Mets in the second game of the doubleheader on July 8 (Pelfrey's debut). 9 runs in 1.2 innings. Lefties hit 100 points higher against Nolasco than righties. A start for Endy looks probable.

Pedro vs. Dontrelle Willis (L) (6-8, 4.27)
Willis hasn't gotten a win since he faced the Mets on July 7. 7.2 Innings, 3 Runs, 9 H, 9 Ks, 5 BBs. He's had 1 good and 1 not so good start lost by the 'pen, and a third with no run support. Most recently, he was knocked around in Philly and only finished 2.1 innings (6 ER, 2 HRs).
Willis is also a very good hitter. Hopefully Pedro won't have the problems with him that Jose Lima did.

Bench:
Matt Treanor (R), backup catcher. Good glove, no bat.
Wes Helms (R), 7-22..271 in mostly backup/PH duties. Some starts at 1B against lefties, but that's N/A in this series.
Reggie Abercrombie (R), backup outfiedler, lost the starting CF job for an inability to hit. .217 on the year. Free swinger, lots of Ks.
Cody Ross (R), some power off the bench, backup OF.
Joe Borchard (S), also has power but hitting .225.

Bullpen:
Joe Borowski (R), closer, 21-for-24 in save opportunities. 1-2, 3.43 ERA. Having his best year since 2003 with the Cubs.

Matt Herges (L), primary setup guy. Decent numbers (1-2, 3.81 ERA) despite tons of baserunners (61 H, 14 BB in 49.2 innings). Leads the team in relief appearances and innings.

Logan Kensing (L), 1-3, 4.66. Had a rough July after a very good June. Telling stat: 1 for 7 in save opportunities.

Randy Messenger (R)'s July (10.38 ERA) was even worse than Kensing's. 1-6, 4.69 on the year.

Taylor Tankersley (L), probably the most effective reliever in the Marlins 'pen. Lefty specalist, never more than 1 inning. 1-1, 1.76, 10 H, 9 BB, 21 Ks in 17.1 innings.

Renyel Pinto (L), on the AAA shuttle, back for the 3rd time. Had 2 good innings against the Mets in May. 6.43 ERA in 7 innings, 5 hits, 7 BB, 9 Ks.

Who's Hurt:
Pitchers Sergio Mitre and Carlos Martinez are on long-term DL stints.

Ex-Mets:
Mike Jacobs
Yusmerio Petit was sent back to AAA after 18.2 Innings. 1-1, 8.68 ERA, 32 H, 13 Ks, 4 BBs.

Ex-Marlins:
Ramon Castro
Carlos Delgado
Cliff Floyd
Paul LoDuca
Darren Oliver

Last night I was watching the local Marlins telecast of the game, and the Aflac duck (he's in every city, isn't he?) asked which player had the most career hits for the Marlins against the Mets.

I guessed Jeff Conine.

I was wrong.

Nice Pinch Hit job.

One fast and fun fact about the Fish is the number of former or future All Star backstops they've had over the years.

Because of all that love for Willis in the baseball community, you wouldn't think that his ERA is 4.27.

Paul Hoover Gets Injury Call Up to Florida Marlins from Albuquerque Isotopes - PCL Baseball (AAA)

While playing with Durham, Hoover, an upper-deck patron tagged Hoover wtih the unfortunate nickname of "Chocolate Buns."
MLN Newswire - Albuquerque Isotopes catcher Paul Hoover has been promoted to the Florida Marlins to fill in for former Isotope Matt Treanor, who went on the 15-day Disabled List with a left shoulder injury. Hoover will join the Marlins today in Miami when the team takes on the New York Mets.

This will be Hoover’s third stint in the Major Leagues, the first two coming with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. On August 8, 2001, Hoover made his big league debut with a pinch-hit single off of Oakland’s Luis Vizcaino, his only hit in four Major League at-bats that season. Hoover returned to the Devil Rays for five games the next season, hitting .176 (3x17) with two RBI. The Marlins have transferred relief pitcher Carlos Martinez to the 60-day DL to make room for Hoover on the 40-man roster.

Hoover has been a stalwart behind the plate for the Isotopes all season, hitting .281 (75x267) with 32 runs, 20 doubles, a triple, five runs and 34 RBI. He’s also been excellent behind the plate, ranking among PCL leaders by throwing out 22 of 63 would-be base stealers for a percentage of 34.9%. The catcher also played for Albuquerque in 2003, racking up a .270 batting average with 35 runs scored, 22 doubles, two triples, five homers, and 40 RBI.

Filling Hoover’s slot on the Isotopes will be catcher Jonathan Aceves, who arrives from Double-A Carolina, where he hit .229 with the Mudcats but ranked 10th in the Double-A Southern League by throwing out 36% of those who tried to steal bases against him.
