What's Eating Paul?

hmmm....

Daily News sez:

]Paul Lo Duca clearly was irate about something when he told print and broadcast media that he no longer will be giving interviews this season.

Until yesterday, Lo Duca had actually been one of the most helpful and available players in the Mets clubhouse. And he was still speaking with news media Thursday night in Miami after the loss to the Marlins. He would not, however, explain the reason he's going silent, except to say it would become obvious in a couple days.

Bergen Record addz:

]UPSET LODUCA: Paul LoDuca, usually one of the more vocal media-friendly players, seemed angered by something — he wasn't saying what — and initially threatened to boycott the media for the rest of the season.

When one reporter later tried to get LoDuca to open up about what was wrong, LoDuca simply said: "You'll find out on Sunday."

I suppose something LoDuca wished not to have printed is to be published in one of the Sunday papers and he's in early damage control?

FOUL BAWL FROM MET LO DUCA'S SEXY WIFE

MODEL RIPS HIS 'ADULTERY' IN DIVORCE SUIT

By CARY CARDWELL in San Antonio and LARRY CELONA in New York

August 7, 2006 -- Met catcher Paul Lo Duca is having an All-Star season on the field - but his personal life is in shambles after his Playboy-model wife accused him of scoring off the field and filed for divorce, The Post has learned.

Sonia Lo Duca - the mother of his 21-month-old daughter, Bella Lucia - has filed papers in her Texas hometown claiming that their marriage has "become insupportable" because of "adultery."

The suit does not describe the nature of the alleged cheating.

But 34-year-old Sonia's family first heard of her husband's alleged philandering during spring training this year.

"She [Sonia] told him she would stick by him through everything except that - she couldn't tolerate adultery," said Sonia's mother, Consuelo Flores.

"She thought she could trust him. She was just so distraught. She couldn't believe it."

Flores said she was told it was not a long-term affair, but a short-term fling that led to the adultery charge.

When asked where it happened, Flores said, "Probably in New York, although it could have been in any city."

The Brooklyn-born Paul Lo Duca, also 34, declined to comment.

The couple met in the mid-1990s in San Antonio through a mutual friend while he played for the San Antonio Missions, then a farm team for the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a friend.

Sonia, a native San Antonian, attended both John Jay HS in the middle-class Northside School District, as well as the University of the Incarnate Word, a private Catholic university in her hometown, the friend said.

According to court papers, Lo Duca married Sonia, whose maiden name is Flores, on Nov. 2, 2000.

That was just few months before the start of his blockbuster first full season in the majors, in which he hit .320 for the Dodgers.

The year 2001 was also big for Sonia.

She posed for Playboy's "Sexy Girl Next Door" spread, which appeared only on the magazine's Web site, a Playboy spokeswoman said.

Sonia's mom called her daughter "a Christian woman" who attends a nondenominational church.

She said she knew nothing about her daughter's former connection with Playboy.

A source close to Lo Duca said the ballplayer knew that Sonia had been a Playboy model, and that he doesn't want his wife to be embarrassed about it now.

"He's aware of that. He's trying to be protective of his wife," the source said.

"He doesn't want her name unfairly dragged through the mud with something that happened a long time ago."

Success brought its rewards, and the couple was able to move into a $1 million mansion in a gated community in San Antonio in 2003.

Their daughter was born the next year.

In the off season this year, Lo Duca was reportedly given a $6.6 million contract to play for the Amazin's - and his performance is a big part of their rise to the top of the National League East.

But just two weeks before Lo Duca was to start behind the plate for the National League in the 2006 All-Star game, Sonia dropped a bombshell with her divorce filing on June 30.

The court papers cite adultery as the grounds for divorce, and also ask that a judge bar Lo Duca from "consuming alcohol within the 24 hours before or during the period of possession of or access to the child."

They also ask that the catcher be banned from letting "an unrelated adult with whom [Lo Duca] has an intimate or dating relationship remain in the same residence with the child."

Sonia's lawyer, Ann Buonocore, was quick to point out that this is standard language found in a divorce petition and that it wasn't implying specific behavior relating to Lo Duca.

The petition says the couple "ceased to live together as husband and wife on or about April 19" of this year.

"This is very upsetting to her," Buonocore said.

"There are very few wives who will" tolerate adultery, the attorney said - but added, "The parties are hoping to work out an amicable settlement."

The source close to Paul Lo Duca said any extramarital incidents happened after the separation, not before, and noted that there are "two sides to every divorce."

Buonocore said her client wants to avoid publicity and the couple is trying to figure out a way to raise their child jointly and divide their property fairly.

"She really wants to maintain her privacy," the attorney said.

"It's not her desire to have her divorce in the newspaper. Paul is a star unto himself. Publicity is fine for him."

A Met spokesman said the Lo Ducas still speak to each other several times a week.

"There's no animosity or hatred between them," said the spokesman, Jay Horwitz said. "Everybody in the Mets organization knows he's getting a divorce . . . [His teammates] feel badly for him, they sympathize with him, and they're incensed with [the] invasion of [his] privacy."

Those close to the pair said that in light of what happened, divorce was inevitable.

Lo Duca wasn't in the most talkative of moods Friday, when he reportedly wouldn't take an interview, saying, "Not today, not for the rest of the year."

He later added, cryptically, "You'll know Sunday."

Lo Duca wouldn't talk to a Post reporter on Saturday. Asked if he had a minute, the normally chatty player answered, "Nope. Sorry."

He let his bat do the talking last night in the Mets' 8-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium.

Lo Duca went 3 for 4, with a double and scored a run. Two of his hits were in the fourth inning.

Mets star: You bet it's legal!

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

This story was reported by:
SHERRY ROSS in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
NANCY DILLON in San Antonio, Tex.
MICHELLE CARUSO in Phoenix
KERRY BURKE, CHRIS ROVZAR and TINA MOORE
It was written by: TINA MOORE

Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca brushed off his estranged wife's allegations that he was a philanderer and spent a carefree day at the races yesterday — despite emerging allegations of troublesome gambling issues.

"I talk to my wife every day," Lo Duca, 34, told the Daily News after being spotted at Saratoga Race Track. "We get along great."

But in a divorce petition filed in Bexar County, Tex., in late June, 34-year-old Sonia Lo Duca paints a different picture. The former Playboy model accuses the Met of infidelity.

Yet sources close to the Brooklyn-born four-time All-Star told The News that his divorce fight was only part of his woes. The sources said Lo Duca also had gambling debts, accumulating a big enough tab that Mets management was aware of it.

The morals clause within Major League Baseball doesn't prohibit a player from gambling at casinos or race tracks, but the league becomes concerned when one of its players runs up unmanageable gambling debts.

Lo Duca insisted to The News yesterday that he only gambled on horses, never on sports. He admitted betting through the Internet, but said all his wagers were legal.

He would not address his wife's allegations, saying only, "We decided to get a divorce six months ago and I wish it didn't happen, but it happens."

The two planned to appear together on WFAN-AM today to discuss their divorce.

They were married just before Lo Duca's first full season in the majors, in which he hit .320 for the Dodgers. The following year, in 2001, she posed for Playboy's "Sexy Girl Next Door" spread.

Standing outside her Spanish-style mansion in a gated community in San Antonio, Tex., Sonia Lo Duca said last night, "I just want my privacy. I want what's best for my daughter."

Despite the media scrutiny, she seemed the picture of tranquility. She smiled as she held one of her dogs, a small teacup terrier, in one hand and a diaper in the other. "I'm feeling fine," she added.

The petition filed by Lo Duca's wife specifically asks the court to prevent Lo Duca from incurring any indebtedness, making withdrawals from accounts or entering safe deposit boxes.

The document also seeks to prevent him from "consuming alcohol" within 24 hours before seeing his 21-month-old daughter or having "intimate" overnight guests when the child is present.

Anne Buonocore, Sonia Lo Duca's Texas-based lawyer, called the laundry list of prohibitions standard fare.

"They want to be able to maintain a positive relationship for their daughter's sake," she said.

There is nothing in the divorce papers targeting Lo Duca's gambling — although he has never kept secret his love for Thoroughbred racing.

His dad, who once owned horses in Arizona, nurtured a love of horse racing in his son. The ballplayer has five horses in training — four in California and one in New York.

Paul Lo Duca Sr. vowed not to discuss his son's headline-grabbing split from his wife — and only wanted to talk about his All-Star season. "People get divorced every day, every 10 seconds," Lo Duca Sr. said.

"I just advised him to get involved with the right people and to be careful and that's what he's done," he added.

Lo Duca's agent, Andrew Mongelluzzi of Palm Harbor, Fla., didn't return calls seeking comment. But Lo Duca's longtime friend Jeff Wallner said the Met "absolutely did not cheat" on his wife.

"He's not a player," Wallner said. "He was a homebody."

Wallner, who runs Lighthouse Financial Group and advises athletes on their finances, said he frequently tries to protect them from women "looking for high-profile athletes to go after their money."

But Sonia Lo Duca's father, Jose Flores of Houston, said his daughter "is a generous individual who's always trying to help everybody" and wasn't interested in money. The 61-year-old dad said his Christian daughter never mentioned marital problems or infidelity. "Like every other parent, I hope it's a rumor," Flores said.

The catcher's brother, Anthony Lo Duca, said the family was taken aback when the divorce case became public. "He's having his best season ever and this has to come out," he said.

The athlete's teammates were sticking by him, including David Wright, who said last night, "Right now we need Paul to do what he does on the field."

The divorce doesn't seem to be hurting Lo Duca's game.

The petition was filed on June 30. Since July 1, no player in baseball has a higher batting average than his .430.

Yancy Street Gang
Aug 08 2006 11:58 AM

Oh, and in the unlikely event that anyone's wondering about it, this has had only a slight impact on Paul Lo Duca's UMDB hitcount. If he wanted a surge, he would have been better off robbing a jewelry store.

There are Mets catchers on both the front and back page of today's Daily News. The guy on the back page, Piazza, has more hits today than Lo Duca, who's on the front page.

I dunno. They've hit upon at least some of the same weird fascination that makes the Wifey Watch thread such fun for me, only they're applying what they do (investigating, exploiting, snapping photos, making funny headlines) to it. I also think there's something to the idea that athletes -- young rich and successful -- have a secret weakness that might/could prevent them from getting whatever they want in any arena, and if you're cheating on your wife and infant daughter with a teenager, maybe you should get called on it.

Do you guys know any 34-year-olds scoring with 19-y.o.'s? Who fail to telkl them they're married and have kids? I'd call that guy a loser.

I've never seen it but there's a hugely popular show in England called "Footballer's Wives" which indicates to me that Wifey Watching is a worldwide phenomenon.

Piazza, getting standing O when approaching the plate: Damn, this is great. They ever cheer like that for you, Paul?

Lo Duca: Well, you know, they cheer pretty hard for a team running away with the division. Burying the Braves and all.

Piazza: keeping the old seat warm.

Lo Duca: Yeah, they filled in the old hole where all your throws used to skip.

Piazza: Damn, the press has been hard on you the last couple of days.

Lo Duca: You know the New York tabloids.

Piazza: They're turning you into Eric Roberts in Star 80.

Lo Duca: I haven't had to hold an "I'm not gay" press conference yet.

Piazza: Ouch. Truce?

Lo Duca: Whatever. Get in the box, Metal Dude.

It's getting so much attention because a lot of people really love hearing about shit like this. More than just a simple divorce filing, Lo Duca cheated on his wife with a young girl he allegedly met at "18 and over" night, and he lied to his wifey, who also happens to be his baby momma.

JD was right on everything he said and it does scream loser (I've been waiting on 'Footballers Wives' in my Blockbuster queue for a couple of months - I can't wait to see it). This is the kinda thing, though, that reminds me that as much as I love Cliff Floyd's quotes, Carlos Delgado's integrity, and everything about David Wright, I still don't want to know anything about the Mets personal lives because I probably won't like them anymore.

She has quite a resume:
High School cutie
Hooters waitress
Featured on the Hooters calendar
Playboy pinup (do they still use that term?) - twice
Role in soft porn movie
Wife of millionaire

To use the wording seen on resumes, she has held positions of "increasing importance".

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry

Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em all around

We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're stiff, kick 'em all around

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it's said and done, we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry

I can't pretend to imagine what it's like to be married to a playboy model,
own race horses, live out of a suitcase half the year and have young ladies
throw themselves on me at hotel bars, and get to play the game for mil-
lions that we all grew up loving - so I ain't gonna pass judgement or anything.
By the more believable accounts, he's dealing with it like a man and the having
it splashed all over the front pages for what seems like three days now is ridiculous.

I don't completely understand why they threw him under the bus to this extent,
and I wonder aloud if someone, like say Jorge Posada, were in the same boat that
I think it would have been handled differently.

]Well you know, Clinton got a blowjob and that led to declining morality across the US, a destablized mideast, Sept. 11th, rising gas prices, the popularity of reality TV, the hyperactivity of beagles, and Zidane's headbutt.

What's really strange is that before all this, I'd bet that 80% of the readers didn't know who Paul Lo Duca was. This would all be a little easier to understand if Lo Duca was more famous. I would think that people would think, "So, a baseball player I never heard of is getting an amicable divorce from a model that I never heard of? And I'm supposed to care about this?"

The whole Christie Brinkley story seems very similar. (I'm not sure, because I haven't been reading any of the articles, but some of the details slip into my head through osmosis.) But at least Christie Brinkley is more well known than Paul Lo Duca.

Now, if Lo Duca had previously been married to Billy Joel, THEN you'd have something!

Gregg Jefferies got the worst of both worlds. At the beginning of his career, he doesn't drink, doesn't go out partying wtih his teammates, and h'es an aloof little prick.

Along the way, he picks oup the party bug, and by the end of his career he's chick-harassing dope fiend.

Good point. You'd think that LoDuca electrified some kid in his swimming pool or something from all of this coverage.

What's that standard line about similarity scores?

I think Paul had better start painting churches in Panama.
