Today, August 6, 2006, Jose Reyés has set a new franchise record for homeruns by a Mets shortstop. The previous record for the franchise --- now in its 44th year --- was co-held by Kevin Elster and Howard Johnson.

It would be great to see team records for home runs set for four different positions in a single season. I think the odds look pretty promising for that to happen this year. Just out of curiosity, what's the team mark for home runs in a season by a pitcher?

It'll take some digging, but I think three, by Seaver and matched by Terrell.

Danny Heep hit four pinch-hit homers in a year. I don't know if that is still the record there. No idea what the DH record is, either. Probably two.

That "most homers by a Met shortstop" record was so patheticly small. I wonder if other teams have a record homer number at any position other than pitcher that is as small as the Mets shortstop record: even with it now at 11.

A few hours with baseball-reference.com and retrosheet and you can answer that question. I'd bet Jose Valentin would tell you that, had he had the second base job right out of camp, he'd be making a run at the record for that position also. I had no idea, until I researched it, that the first base record was Kingman 82. It's hard to recall where Kingman was playing when, as he usually wore out his welcome at one position and finished the season at a different spot than where he started. I was actually thinking that Clendenon 70's modest 22 homers (later twice eequaled by John Olerud) was the firstbase record.

Well, he's got 12 in 280 plate appearances. Give him Matsui's 136 plate appearances and Anderson Hernandez's 41, and that projects to another 7.59, for 19.59. Project that over 162 games and we're at 28.85. Now that's making a few favorable assumptions, and failing to eliminate at-bats garnered while he was in the lineup with Matsui or Hernandez, but I expect he'd be a little self-serving in his logic.

or perhaps his early-season slump would never have ended if he'd been thrust into every-day duty sooner. we'll never know and considering our division lead we won't have to worry about or regret the answer, just hope he's still hitting in october.
