The Mets prospects in the Arizona Fall League are being assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox this season. I think they played for Grand Canyon and Peoria in recent seasons. This year's assignees include: Pitchers: Phil Humber Joe Smith Infielders: Michel Abreu Outfielders: Fernando Martinez Trainers: Ruben Barrera Martinez's assignment is further indication of how hard the Mets are willing to push their top prospects, as he's currently looking over his head (.197 / .235 / .421 // .656 in 76 at-bats) at St. Lucie.

Abreu is 31 years old, according to the Binghamton roster. I believe this is his first year of US baseball. (Was he a Cuban refugee?) He has been hitting well at AA, with some power. Maybe the Mets are preparing him to take over the Julio Franco, old-guy, backup first baseman, righty pinch hitter, roster spot when Franco's contract expires after next year. And they're obviously grooming Barrera to replace Ray Ramirez, who's going to get lot in arbitration this winter.
