I'm not a huge Shawn Green fan. Or Geoff Jenkins.

But that is not an appetizing lineup I see.

I think it's more than most teams have.

With Mr. Mer in the house, Steve Trachsel has three swinging strikeouts already, and he's not even out of the second.

Steve Trachsel.

Yes, I know I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm allowed. I'm having Nady and Floyd withdrawal.

Well, let's not jump off the bridge just yet. Ramon Castro will come back, DiFelice will be gone, and besides, LoDuca will start every game in the playoffs anyway. That's the weakest spot in the lineup today.

Zvon
Aug 13 2006 01:48 PM

After three complete pitchers are mirroring each other.

3 IP
0 runs
Trax has 4 Ks / Armas 3

Looks like a dual in the sun.

Well, there goes one perfecto as Chavez gets a hit.

Zvon
Aug 13 2006 01:57 PM

Endy with the Mets first hit of the game, a nice single thru the hole into right.

Beltraan works an at bat and draws a walk.
Nice at bat there Carlos.

1st and 2nd for Delgado.

Is it to early to whip this out? (ahhhhh!*everyone averts their eyes)

I won't jump off any bridges. And it's not catcher I'm particularly worried about. I don't like the corner outfielders. And when I'm worried about them I remember my doubts about Valentin....

Ok maybe I am on the ledge of that bridge.

Washingtons first hit of the game too.
Trax follows up by distributing a base on balls to Zimmerman.

Two groundball outs get him out of it.

With one out and a runner on 1st in the 8th, Darren Oliver comes in to face Nick Fucking Johnson.

ScarletKnight41

OMG! Not only did Nick Fucking Johnson fly out to center, but Ryan Zimmerman makes a rookie mistake by forgetting how many outs there were in the inning - by the time he got to third, the ball was back to first to complete the double play.

One pitch, two outs - nice work Darren! <g>

Zvon

Been that way for a long time now with shows on the WB...err now its CW 11

Your only bet for any kind of pre/post coverage will always be with whomever the cable carrier is.

Worst example was in 1999 I believe, where the Mets were doing a 1969 reuion and what may have been the last OTG played at Shea.

The WB carried the Met game that afternoon, and started their programing promptly at regular Met game time and ended promptly at the game's conculsion. I even emailed the WB wondering was it REALLY neccessary to air the 12 pm airing of a rebroadcast of the previous week's "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" I mean did that showing do ANY ratings that would neccesitate a firm "NO!" to carrying a special Met pomp and circumstance event?

No response of course

UGH! Just noticed that Ch 11 is having the Met game next Saturday as well.

I might be TiVoing both 11 and SNY to see if ANY of the pregame stuff is televised!

Yeah because reruns of Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond will do better raitings that some celebration of a beloved championship team!

Is it any wonder that the MFY OTG hasn't been on over-the-air TV for the last 18 some years?

Trains are great, even though (1) the Amtrack government-subsidized monopoly is a disaster, and (2) people are zipping around France and Japan in high-speed supertrains made with technology developed here while we're still rumbling around in 1930s-tech sardine cans.

Interesting fact: Rockville Centre in 1933 advertised that they were 37 minutes from Manhattan by train. It's the same trip time today... if everything goes right.

I should have headed down to Union Station to meet Mr. Met after the game. They probably have a special train entrance to get him on, don't you think?

I realize my remark made no sense at all. I came on here about twenty minutes after the game ended, and getalife must have somehow held up a whole bunch of messages, because the last note I saw still had the Mets and Billy looking for the third out. So I post mine, and suddenly it's at the end of all those other notes.

Yeah but as the years go on this line written in the early 50's is getting more and more out dated "...I bet there's rich folks eating, in those fancy dinning cars, probably drinking coffee and smoking them big cigars..." -Johnny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues"

No fancy dinning cars, and no on-board special coffee either! Oh and its NO SMOKING these days

And I'm not even going to get into all the references in Steve Goodman's "The City Of New Orleans" in terms of the romantic notion of train travel

Edgy DC
Aug 13 2006 10:23 PM

Let's start with the fact that trains go from central city to central city, add on the fact that we aren't degraded by a stripsearch, and they can be a better way to bounce around the eastern seaboard if priced competitively.

I think I covered all the loss of romance with the points about the single operator and the outmoded technology. All that can be undone, though.

What FK said. Except that it's more like 90 minutes from DC to Philly.

I recently took the Amtrak from DC to Central NJ. It's pleasant, quick and efficient. OTOH, even before the events of the past week, getting through airports these days is a major PITA.

I wouldn't call Amtrak quaint, but it is an efficient method of traveling between these two cities.

Of course, Al Qaida has demonstrated in Madrid and London that they can blow up trains as easily as planes but the security measures (or the hysteria level) do not compare for trains. I think the TSA should just be renamed ASA since that's all they're concerned with.

Flying first class is hardly a great perk when you're only air-borne for like 12 minutes or whatever it would be from DC to Philly. By the time you reach cruising altitude ... it's time to descend.
And do they even have first-class service for those short jumps?

Meanwhile, all that time you "saved" is spent shuttling from the stadium in the city out to the airport, waiting around for take-off, and then waiting to land before shuttling again from the new airport back into city to get to the hotel.
But hey, I bet they get first-class bus accomadations.

The best train ride I ever had was when I was in the Army. I was returning to DC from NY and if you wore your uniform, you got a special rate. It left NY at (IIRC) 6 or 7 PM. I asked the conductor where the dining car was, and was told it was "seven cars back".

As I entered the first car, there were a lot of people wearing red, cheering and drinking. I asked what was going on and was told there were six cars of Redskins fans on the train, returning from Yankke Staduim, where the 'Skins had beaten the Jints for the first time in seven years there. The guy then added "Come on, GI, have a drink with us to help us celebrate".

I never made it out of that first car. How I eventually made it to the bus station in DC, then back to base, is still a mystery to me.

Later
