I've never seen a hitter lose the handle on the bat twice in an at-bat, but Delgado just did that. Once he hit Hamels in the right knee, the second time it flew almost all the way to second base. Good AB so far, ten pitches in. Get a hold of one, Carlos.

Aug 14 2006 07:18 PM

And on the thirteenth pitch, Carlos pops weakly to right. Good AB, but bleh output.

Here comes Pedro.

I'm not so sure it was a good at-bat. Each foul was weak; Carlos looked helpless the whole time.

What's up with him anyway?

seawolf17
Aug 14 2006 07:21 PM

You know, I originally typed just "bleh" because he looked like crap, but then I erased it and added the good AB part because he at least worked him for 13 pitches, so there's something to be said for that. Of course, we could trade him for Doug Mientkiewicz and improve our offense at first base these days.

That was one of the most interesting at bats Ive seen this season.
In both instances, when he threw the bat, he walked all the way out on the field to retrieve it.
He ends up lifting a flyout to right, but that at bat had to take a lil something out of Hamel. A 13 pitch at bat.

An infield single and steal by Rollins, and a line single by that pesky Chase Utley gives the phils the lead, 1-0.

That liner by Chase-- ugh!
Degado moves like an old man at first--he should have gotten a glove on that.

After an error by LoDuca allows Utley to move up, a fly to right by Howard that Milledge should have reached drops in.

Pedro walks Delucci and the bases are full.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 07:33 PM

2-0 as Pedro hits Rowan with a pitch. One out, bases still loaded.

Shitfuck!

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 07:35 PM

And Martinez, with 2 strikes on him, plunks Rowand and another run scores.
Cripes.

Phils announcers are wondering why Pedro is not throwing the fast ball, then he does and its clocked at 86, and they say--oh, thats why. Hes got no fastball tonight.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 07:37 PM

Who is this guy on the mound and what has he done to Pedro?

The third run of the inning scores on a balk, and a HBP reloads the bases!

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 07:38 PM

Beltran misplays the outfield ball to make it 6-0 Philly. Nunez is out at third for the second out of the inning, which is cold comfort.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 07:39 PM

I cant believe what I just saw!

Pedro with a bases loaded balk--and it looked like he balked twice on the same play!
He stopped twice---1st the crowd yelled balk and then he stopped again and the ump yelled it!

And then Martinez hits another batter and Nunez hits a single that gets past Beltran in center and goes to the fence--
all baserunners score!!!!!

6-0 Phils

Holy frig. What the hell is going on down there?!?!

seawolf17
Aug 14 2006 07:40 PM

At least Pedro will be fresh for his start Saturday night.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 07:43 PM

Well, that was one of the worst Met half innings Ive ever seen.

Olivers up in the pen as the Mets bat.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 07:48 PM

Pedro is out of the game - Oliver is in to pitch the second. SNY is opining that Pedro may be injured.

Yancy Street Gang
Aug 14 2006 07:49 PM

This looks like it's one of the one-third of the games that you're going to lose.

Oh well.

I know Ive never seen Martinez with a worse half inning.
I dont think he's hurt---at least I certainly hope not.

He just didnt show tonight.

A Milledge double to lead off the third, and if the Mets are gonna make a comeback here, they better start now.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 08:10 PM

The word on Pedro - a strained right calf.

metirish
Aug 14 2006 08:10 PM

Pedro has a strained right calf muscle, he felt it during warm ups......shit.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 08:15 PM

More word on Pedro: he pitched like poop (but of course they arent gonna say that).

Oliver gives up a homer to Dellucci and its gonna be a looooooong night.

7-0 Phils

Good thing "Hell's Kitchen" is on.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 08:20 PM

Hamel, who last few outings has been gaining confidence and control at the ML level, is starting to look more like the pitcher the Phils hoped he would be.
He is setting up and controlling his devistating change up much better than when he first came up.

Hitting corners and inticing batters to chase it out of the zone.

Met batters are gonna want to be agressive and if they they arent patient they will be playing right into Hamels hands.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 08:24 PM

Milledge plays a Victorino shot down the line into a double-ugh.
Rollins scores.

Utley whips one to the wall in right for a legit double.
Victorino scores.

This
is
the
worst.

Yeah it sucks but you'll have these games every now and then,I just hope Pedro is not hurt bad.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 08:27 PM

Phils announcers:
]"Never thought Id see the Mets play like this......This is fun to watch."

Happy birthday Jay!

Oliver also doesnt look like good ol Oliver.

Rollins takes him deep for a 3 run dinger.

12-0

Victorino goes yard-

13-0

Hey, maybe the Phils score 61 runs for you tonight Jay.

Aug 14 2006 08:46 PM

Poor Oliver looks nackered,13 to zip,Ring coming in.

I dont see why not.
We can even let him pitch lefty and give that strained calf muscle a rest, as well as his arm.
........He cant do any worse than tonight.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 09:05 PM

Ring seems to be doing nicely in the no-pressure spot. Maybe this will be the game where he finds his major league groove.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 09:16 PM

Gary and Keith just said the same things about Ring that I said an inning ago.

Is it possible that they read the Pool during games? Hmmm.....

metirish
Aug 14 2006 09:17 PM

I thought about you SK when Gary and Keith said that....

Yea- nice work so far.
No runs or hits and two Ks in 2.1 innings.

Delgado is pulled for Mr Franco.
LoDuca is out-DiFelice in.
Id say thats the throwing in of the towel.
Not that CarlosD has been hitting lately.

Mets have only three hits - Milledge is 2 fer 2. Go figure.

Hamel has been magnifico.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 09:20 PM

Hamel-
20 out of 25 1st pitch strikes.

Thanks SK....Hamels is just great tonight, and what a great name he has....Reyes gets a hit but the ball hits Milledge, that about sums up this night.

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 09:26 PM

Milledge reaches again--on a strike out past ball,...ha.
But the way he chased that pitch for the third strike--thats all Hamels.

Hamels strikes out Ledee for his 9th K of the game.

And Milledge is out as the ground single by Reyes hits him in the leg!

Now Ive seen everything--

I think.

Aug 14 2006 09:34 PM

Gary brings back a memory, telling us that the Mets worst shutout loss was in 1999 when the Braves beat them 16 to nothing,Matt franco pitched that night for the Mets, I remember that well.....

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2006 09:36 PM

It's comforting that loss took place in 1999.

Even the best teams have their days of suckitude.

metirish
Aug 14 2006 09:39 PM

Ok I am stumped, Gary talking about position players that pitched in games for the Mets said that the first time it ever happened for the Mets was in 1992, I thought he said it was Bill Beceto, but when I check UMDB I see no one with that name, anyone know the postition player was?

metirish
Aug 14 2006 09:41 PM

OK I heard wrong,it was Bill Pecota, thanks to UMDB.

Hey I think thats the closest we've gotten to a Cyber Cookie on the Cranepool Forum!

Well not counting that birthday cake SK trots out all the time

=;)

Zvon
Aug 14 2006 09:46 PM

Yep, even the best teams have a bad night.
But that one inning.....sheesh.
And even if you subtract that 1st inning Phils still win 7-0.

But this was just one horrendous inning for the books:

Phils first inning______________________________
Rollins: single
Victorino: Rollins steals 2nd- Victorino flies out.
Utley: single-RBI
Howard: error(LoDuca)- Utley to second- Howard singles (1st & 3rd)
Dellucci: walk (loaded)
Rowand: hit by pitch (run)
Coste: balk (run)- hit by pitch (loaded)
Nunez: doubles past Beltran (was really a single and error in my book)
clears the bases.(3 runs) Nunez out trying for the triple.
Hamels: strikes out.

Shake it off guys-tomorrows another day.
