1. Can someone post the formulae for magic numbers/elimination numbers?
2. Can we do this for the Mets other NL East rivals too? It would nice to see them all dropping away over the next 6 weeks.

Not sure we need formulae - eek, I said formulae ...

Any combo of Mets' wins and whoevers' non-wins I think works just fine.

Philadelphia is at 32. Florida is also at 30. Washington is at 26.

This really hasn't sunk in to me yet. Either that or I don't care as much as I used to.

We haven't won an East title in 18 freaking years. This is fun.

Well that's just it. I don't know how the rest of you figure out the Mets magic number and the elimination numbers for the rest of the team. Maybe formulae is not the right word. Just tell me how you do it.

Elster88
Aug 13 2006 09:32 PM

Yancy explained it nicely in the Standings thread.

You find the maximum number of wins that a team can get this year (162 minus losses), and the magic number is the number of wins the Mets would need to surpass that maximum.

Elster88
Aug 13 2006 09:33 PM

Example:

Mets 70-45
Braves 55-60

Maximum number of wins the Braves can get = 162 - 60 = 102
Number of wins the Mets need to surpass that = 103 - 70 = 33

Edgy DC
Aug 13 2006 09:41 PM

Or just take the numbers I posted above, and subtract one for every Met win or a loss by the given team

The lowest "tragic number" for being eliminated from a division belongs - not surprisingly - to the Royals.

Their Max wins = 85; Tigers need just 10 more for 86

Elimination from the WC is a bit tougher to figure because ALL the teams in front of you can't lose ALL their games since, in a number of cases, they're playing each other.
But, suffice to say, the Royals aren't going to the post-season this year.

Elimination from the NL WC will be real tough to figure in advance because there's such a log-jam and so many contender-v-contender match-ups since the Pirates, Cubs, Nats and (maybe) Giants are the only ones who don't still have a punchers chance at it.

Elster88
Aug 13 2006 09:43 PM

The formula works the same though.

On second tought, I should PM that lad Rockin' Doc and suggest that great Irish Red beer as a beer of the game, rather than any piss poor water that Coors crap came up with.

I swear, they must have gotten the water out of the Liffey its so bloody bad!

Dublin is to Dubliners a dear auld dirty town
It`s getting dearer every year and hard to earn a pound
And as for the Liffey that gash through the city,
It`s thicker than treacle or chalk
It`ll soon be so grim that instead of a swim
They`ll be holding the Liffey walk

The first couplet there has changed since that song was written. Maybe the last four lines have hope also.

Washington, who seemingly thought they were in the hunt as the trade deadline approached, has repeatedly blinked since then, and is now only 4.5 games ahead of Pittsburgh, and plummetting fast.

Their elimination number is down to 12, with Florida at 19 and Philadelphia at 22.

Are we really concerned about the Braves not winning the NL East title?

I'll be happy when they are eliminated from any possibility of the Wild Card. That is the magic number that's important to me.

Based on the pain they've inflicted on the Mets over the years, I now defer to Mr. Conan the Barbarian for a quote about what I'd like to see the Mets do to the Braves.

"Crush your enemies.
Drive them before you.
Hear the lamentations of their women."

The Royals have opened elimination season by officially dropping from the AL Central Division race. One more win by Chicago or loss by them and they are also out of the Wild Card race before the start of September.

Turn out the lights
The party's over
They say that
All good things must end
Call it tonight
The party's over
And tomorrow starts
The same old thing again

But the crazy crazy party
Never seen so many people
Laughing dancing
Look at you you're having fun
But look at me
I'm almost cryin'
That don't keep her love from dyin'
Misery cause for me the party's over
Turn out the lights...

Once I had a love undyin'
I didn't keep it but I tried
Life for me was just one party
And then another
I broke her heart so many times
I had to have my parting wife
I had to have my party
Why broke her heart so many times
But one day she said
Sweetheart the party's over
Turn out the lights...

As long as they still have a chance to make the post season, they are not really dead.

True, but this thread is more about ending the NL East Divisional run, especially considering how fruitless it has been, especially in recent years. All other long Divisional runs seem to include more than just a championship to show for it. Granted 1991-1999 was the real salad days of the run, and that did include 5 trips to the World Series, its hard to really say they deserve to be among the best, even in the NL. Very much like that Dodger run from 1946 (play-in series vs Cardinals) to 1966 (WS loss to the Orioles. Lots of NL pennants, only three rings to show for it.

Tell you what, its going to be a trip in Atlanta in a couple of weeks. No one in the building and that FSU fight song playing loud when the Braves are ralling. Its going to be real funny and, ummm, tacky (tackier than playing it while the Braves were down big against the Mets in July since there won't be many in the park)

Yancy Street Gang
Sep 13 2006 08:42 AM

So now the Yankees will be the longest reigning team.
