Need help for my son's first birthday

To those more photoshop savvy than I am, how can I take the template Yancy uses for his player of the month announcements,

and insert a picture of my son?

Obviously I'd want to replace the "Carlos Beltran" with "Ryan Kim".

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this idea came to me with very little time left before his birthday party.

Thanks.

How adorable is that? :)

CF, maybe you should post this in the Baseball Forum too, I don't think Zvon ventures over here very often

Er, but Yancy does.

I couldn't see the photo; the link isn't working. If it was, it would be very easy for me to slap your kid's photo where Beltran's is and I could e-mail you the image.

Yancy, could you email me?

Thanks.

WOW, this board has the cutest kids, CF Ryan is so amazing looking, and a mets fan to boot, was he upset about the last few games?

What a shot. I know hipsters who'd kill for that do.

Happy bday to the Ryan Express.

Aug 16 2006 08:29 AM

Thanks guys. I can't take any credit. It's all my wife's doing. Irish, he's not so upset over the last two days as he is about the starting pitching outlook for October. And don't even get him started about Nady.

Anyway, here's what I've been able to piece together so far. Not great, but it's my first attempt at photoshop.

That looks great CF!

Nice photoshopping. Say happy birthday to cf for us, CF.

That turned out great, CF, have a nice birthday party! :)

I think you need to encourage him to take up pitching instead of outfield. The Ryan name sake and all. Plus it looks like he has Ron Darling good looks going for him. I notice he doesn't want to muss his 'do with a hat either.

Update: So with an assist from Yancy, I was able to create that image and then take it to Kinko's to get it printed on glossy cardboard. Getting them cut costs a fortune so my wife and I will be breaking out the scissors this week.

They come out to about wallet sized so we'll be using them as part of the favors we hand out at his birthday party.

Love it, CF. Nice. We did something similar for MiniWolf as a birth announcement:

Obviously the picture is the star, but the Topps trophy in the corner is the detail you gotta love.

Scissors?!

Use the papercutter at Kinkos yourself. You can cut 5 maybe 10 at a time and its a much straighter cut.

It'll take you 15 minutes.

Elster88

A paper cutter was one of the best investments I've ever made. $20, IIRC, and paid for itself in lack of agitation/disgruntlement within a week.

How was the party?

Where are the pictures?

Party was a blast. I'll give a report (if anyone is interested) after I upload the pictures.

Not that I'm anything like in time, but you don't want to crop out that mysterious grip. Who knows what the hell he's throwing.

Finally got around to uploading some pics...

Ryan gets dressed for his big day.

The party was at a Korean banquet hall in Flushing. In the
foreground, you can see the favors with Ryan's baseball card.

The host makes his rounds. "Hey, how you doin? Thanks for coming..."

The cool thing about the place in Flushing is that they set up a
traditional Korean ceremony for the kid. On his first birthday, Ryan
dresses up in hanbok and selects an object that will symbolize his destiny.

Ryan selected a baseball. (Ok, so I threw in some modern
revisions to the traditional Korean ceremony) The string symbolizes longevity,
the book and pencil mean he will be a scholar, the money is fortune,
the bowl means he will never go hungry, and the bat and golf club were
my other innovations.

Afterwards it was time for cake.

Wash it down with some milk from Grandma.

Then pass the fuck out with Gramps.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 31 2006 09:33 AM

Wow - that kid went through more wardrobe changes than Cher!

Seriously, it looks like you had a fabulous celebration of Ryan's first year. Mazel Tov :)

Then you should move to a neighborhood with a Korean milkman.

Centerfield
Aug 31 2006 10:06 AM

Thanks guys. Seawolf, you should have the ceremony for miniwolf anyway. My friends are all doing it. The only trick is figuring out what outfit he should wear. A buddy of mine who is Jewish, married to a Norwegian girl, says his kid is going to be dressed as a Viking with a yarmulke.

Willets Point
Aug 31 2006 10:12 AM

A yarmulke with horns would simplify things.

I guess I can dress my future kids as leprechauns in leiderhosen.

Getting a little stereotypical?

When I was in the Army, I shared the barracks with an entire platoon of National Guard troops from Iowa. I was the first Jew most of them had met. I was told by several of them that they were surprised that I didn't have horns and a tail.

He wasn't talking about stereotypes. He was talking about the Jewish-Viking version of the Korean ceremony.

I know he was, and his comment gave me a chuckle.
But I also wanted to point out my experience that some might take it another way.
Another barrack-mate who heard the exchanges told me that IOWA is really an acronym. It stands for "Idiots Out Walking Around".

The same way they've been taking it from folks in other states for years. It was told to me by someone from North Dakota, and someone from Minnesota said he'd heard that joke, too. The Iowans are apparently not highly regarded by others from the mid-west.

Years after that, there was a joke going around the internet about a plane crash at the Des Moines airport. The passengers and crew all got out before the plane burst into flames. (That part is true)
Then, when they realized that they were in Iowa, many of them jumped back into the flames.

My Mom likes to tell the story of the Iowan expatriate she met who wore a t-shirt that said "Iowa is a four-letter word".

Benjamin Grimm
Aug 31 2006 11:35 AM

So, Iowa is the New Jersey of the plains?

I never knew that. Of course, I don't give much thought to Iowa. I did drive through it on a cross-country vacation when I was 13. All I remember is my dad getting a speeding ticket shortly after we crossed the Mississippi.

Johnny Dickshot

I think I'm visiting Des Moines on a biz-trip next month.

I'll ask about their Jews, and their Koreans for good measure.

My wife ordered mugs, which she filled with chocolate or candy. Guests got to choose which one they wanted. She put them in those mesh bags you can see, tied them up with a ribbon, and then attached to the ribbon was a mini-baseball card like the one seen earlier in this thread.

Only one guest was keen enough to identify the year and brand of baseball card.

Virtually all neighboring states make fun of each other and all pretend that their particular jokes are unique. They're not.
Johnny Carson used to read submitted state jokes all the time. The one about the the nieghboring "State U" having astroturf on their football field so the cheerleaders couldn't graze was the most common.

P.S. I spent a week in Iowa a bunch of years ago.
Nice place.

Aug 31 2006 06:03 PM

Lol, me too. My dad had a cousin there and we drove out and spent a few days. I was about 10, my sister and brother 16 and 17.

In almost all the rooms there were those girlie garage calanders, the ones that you lift up the little film front and the "clothes" disappear. I can just imagine what my mom thought bringing three kids to stay there.
It's the only thing I remember about the trip.

Virginia has a lot of jokes about West Virginia and most of them are quite raunchy and I think unique to West Virginia stereotypes.

Lotsa Scandinavians in that state (Iowa that is) and surprisingly still in somewhat homogenous locales.
I'd go from one town which would be almost entirely of Swedish descent to another a bunch of miles away which was proudly wearing its Norwegian heritage and so on.

They were very big on 'Kringle' - which is a kind of Swedish/Danish cookie which I had never heard of before that point (and rarely since).
