LL World Series

First a tribute to last year's delightful winners:

Here's the Little League Website:

http://www.littleleague.org/

The weather here today was quite rainy, but we've been waiting all summer for a rainy day, so it's hard to complain. Games are on ESPN and ESPN2 this year again (sans Harold Reynolds).
Lots of strike outs, not much hitting to speak of as of yet.

If anyone else is following feel free to chime in

I was meaning to start a thread on this during the Staten Island-Georgia game but never got around to it.

I'm a Great Kills LL grad myself, but I'm rooting for Mid-Island to win one for NY.

Damn dirty Georgia team was stealing signs.

I wasn't going to mention it, but I disliked that Georgia team the minute I set eyes on them.

This at-bat just made my day.

Aaron Durley, the 6'8", 256 lb., Saudi ManBeastKid of a 13-year old drawing a walk against some little 5 foot Pacific Island pitcher who looks like Tattoo from Fantasy Island.

Did you see his mom this afternoon? Funny lady...

OO, I'm sure you were watching the NY/IL game; great game, kinda sad ending.

Hate to knock the local boys (and 12-year olds for that matter), but that was some serious brainlock all around on that final play.

That last play was kind of a downer.

]Aaron Durley, the 6'8", 256 lb.,

i didnt even think it was possible to be 6'8 at that age, is this another foreigner who needs his birthdate checked?

also the fact that a 13 year old outweighs me is kind of scary.

I skimmed by the LLWS for a few seconds yesterday (I don't generally watch) and was stumped by a few things:

1) Blond Saudis??
There were several of them. Sound like ringers to me

2) What's CNMI?
That's what they were labeling the team from Saipan

I think most of those 13 y/o kids are bigger than me but I've become used to that over the years.

Nice mouths on the little kids from SI. ESPN will probably get a fine from the FCC after one of the kids dropped an F-bomb in the dugout with the coach's mic on.

on edit: ESPN posted this just moments ago:

An incident at the Little League World Series on Sunday night involving a player swearing and a coach slapping the player has resulted in reprimands, apologies and a five-second delay for broadcasts of the event.

Little League officials on Monday reprimanded the manager and a player for the Staten Island, N.Y. team after the player was heard using an obscenity and the manager responded by slapping him.

In the middle of the sixth inning, just before a commercial break, a player for Staten Island used an obscenity while telling his teammates in the dugout that they needed just one run to tie the game. The Staten Island manager responded with a quick slap to the player.

Lemont defeated Staten Island, 1-0.

The manager and the player apologized Monday for their actions, and Little League officials have made them aware that a repeat violation could lead to a suspension.

In response to the matter, ESPN has decided to put its Little League World Series telecasts on a five-second delay beginning with Monday's 3 p.m. game on ESPN between Lake Charles, La., and Portsmouth, N.H.

One f-ing run! (NSFW, of course)

It's never dull when a NYC team heads to Williamsport.

NOW they put on a delay?
Did it just occur to ESPN that 13 y/olds are both able and likely to curse?

shaq was about that big at that age...

I thought you folks were exaggerating/kidding about the size of that kid. I didn't think that was even possible.
And, although he looks outsized compared to the others, it's less than I'd imagine since the rest of those kids look like they're close to 6-footers also.

Trying to remember my size at that age ... I'm guessing 5' 3" or so and about 85-90 pounds.

Think of it this way, OO, the New York boys didn't win any games but they changed history: the 5 second tape delays are all because of them.... :)

Apropos of Nothing comment: The CEO of Little League, Steve Keener, went to high school with me; he's a year or so older than me and in fact his brother Mike was in my class. Both nice kids, nice looking, good basketball players. I must point out though, that I didn't know either one of them.

Tried to get my son to go down and get a job selling concessions but he would have none of it. Might have gotten on TV though. Or gotten to take a perro caliente to that hot chica, Ivan!

Now that Mike Mussina's on the DL, I wouldn't be surprised to see him sneak home this weekend and put in an appearance. He's very active in Little League, so no matter what the rest of you think, he's an okay guy.

**********************************************************************************

Oh, and one last note--If you have't gotten a chance to see the Saudi team and Aaron Durley, they'll be playing tomorrow.

]shaq was about that big at that age...

He's bigger than Shaq at that age; they've been comparing them at age 13 throughout the tournement.

Young Aaron wears size 19 shoes, so if you've got any lying around you're not using, you might want to give his poor mom a break and send them his way!
(something stylish!)

My neighbor's son is going to be at that game tomorrow (cooby - you met the boy's younger brother on Opening Day)

Eh, I don't know. I like it over here, it's quieter, like me.

I also forgot to mention that my cousin was on the first or second LL World champion team. I forget which, but Scarlet might remember because I think I pointed him out on the picture when we visited the Museum together.

ScarletKnight41

Dang, Japan won, but they are another nice little team and I'm happy for them.

Tonight the fatass Georgia kids play NH, I believe.

My heart is growing softer for the Far East teams in this event.

As a youngster, I'd watch the teams, usually from Taiwan, go about the event with Soviet Bloc Olympic Style efficiency, routinely bombarding American teams.

But recently the teams, mostly from Japan, seem to have a real joy for the game. They cry when they lose a close one, they rejoice when they win in walk-off style as they did a few years ago.

cooby
Aug 31 2006 01:19 PM

Agreed, it used to be a given that they'd win; now it isn't and they are easy to root for, just like everybody else. These poor Japanese kids were crying before the game was even over the other night.

In true Joe Morgan style, he claimed that in a half hour, they'd be over it.
