A first year pro-ball player, OF Dustin Martin has arguably been the best hitter on the 2006 Brooklyn Cyclones.

A 4-year college player at Sam Houston State University, Martin's solid senior campaign (.389, 6 HR, 13 SB in 54 games) prompted the Mets to select him with their 26th round pick.

The lefthanded centerfielder features extra-base power and speed and has also shown pretty good plate discipline for a first year guy.

Martin was one of 6 Brooklyn Cyclones sent to the NY-Penn League All-Star Game, in which he went 2-for-5 from the cleanup spot and was pranked 3 times by his own hitting coach.

He looks like Johnny Lawrence from Karate Kid, or at least, the generic 80s teen movie villain.

Dustin Martin, DHing, went 2-2 with a 3-run homer in the Hawaii League opener!

Butera, Parnell, Carp and Blake Eager are his teammates, but none of them played.

Dustin had a pretty nice winter in the Hawaii League and wound up being one of the better hitters for League Champions North Shore Honu.

Inside Pitch has cousin Dustin Martin ranked as the #15 prospect in the Mets organization.

"I thinkI did as well as I could have done," Martin said. "They had confidence in me the whole year and kept me around the three or four hole all year. I played well, put up some good avearage numbers, and some good power numbers as well."

Mark Healey doesn't think he has any particular standout skills, but describes him as "unflappable" and "able to combine very competent skills in all of those areas."

After impressing in Brooklyn and the Hawaiian Winter League, Dustin bumped up to High-A ball to start this season. My boy is in St. Lucie and he keeps on keepin' on.

That's nothing to sneeze at, and it includes an awesome .364/.465/.545 line with men in scoring position.
