Re: IGT 08/24, Cards at Mets

]Green erm

It's not that easy bein' green
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves
When I think it could be nicer being red or yellow or gold
Or something much more colorful like that

It's not easy bein' green
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
Not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
Or stars in the sky

But green's the color of Spring
And green can be cool and friendly-like
And green can be big like an ocean
Or important like a mountain
Or tall like a tree

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why
But why wonder, why wonder?
I am green and it'll do fine
It's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be

They will play this one unless absolutely impossible. There is no room in the schedule whatsoever for a makeup.

Will this game REALLY matter? Game 7 in the LCS? Mets are 10 games up (or around there anyway) Pick this up on October 2nd?

Cardinals are in a tight division race. I'm guessing this game matters quite a bit to Cincinatti.

Rain delay theater allowed Gary to catch us up on the news of the day -

El Duque won't pitch tomorrow after all. They say he's not injured, but they're nonetheless skipping his start. Bannister will pitch tomorrow, and Oliver Perez will likely pitch Saturday. In the meantime, following his knee surgery, Ramon Castro has been moved to the 60-day DL.

In his pre-game interview, Shawn Green expressed a lotof excitement about becoming a Met and about being reunited with Carlos Delgado, who helped Green out a lot in the minor leagues and at the beginning of his major league career.

Thing I should have said a week ago Saturday: "Maybe its their way of getting Bannister back healthy, throw a day for him!"

Ouch, Castro is done for the year then?

Any mention of who's no longer on the active roster?

Yes, Castro is done for the year. According to the Mets.com roster, Ledee is gone.

Reyes's bloop is one that Edmonds sucks up easily.
He'd spread some mustard on it doing so ... but he'd almost certainly get it.

ScarletKnight41

LoDuca is HBP. Runners on first and second, nobody out.

The two-tone helmet makes me want to cry. But Marquis' stirrups are kickin'.

Marquis is pretty cool, a Staten Island fella like myself. Met him once, he seemed cool. Glad he's out of Atlanta.

That was some hard luck on a well hit ball.
Wright hung himself out to dry---

Two double plays aid Marquis thru the 1st two.

Frayed Knot
Aug 24 2006 08:16 PM

Green's stance is much more open than I remember it from earlier in his career.

My first impression of him from back in his Toronto days was that his tall (though not AS tall), thin build and Blue Jay uni wearing #15 (I think) you could see the 5 on his back in his slightly closed stance - all of which made him look a lot like Olerud who had recently played there.
And I thought, hey here's a guy who's going to be pretty good: he's a John Olerud ... but with speed!!

Williams has a nice swing but he bails out something awful.

Shawn Green gets his first RBI as a Met! 3-0 Mets :)

Frayed Knot
Aug 24 2006 08:34 PM

Thought Davey-boy had one there ... settles for the sac fly.

Marquis is gonna have to come in with one sooner or later. He's trying to live on the outside corner the whole night (esp w/the leftys, he wanted no part of Delgado).
Someone's gonna smack him but good before this night is over.

Zvon
Aug 24 2006 08:34 PM

LoDuca tags off a deep drive to right by Wright.

Wrights power level is down. He got as much as he could of that pitch.....

Green with his 1st Met hit and RBI as Beltran scores on his line single to left.

3-0 Metropolitans

I don't think it was a coincidence that David started to slump when Floyd got injured. This season's stats aside, I don't think other teams perceived Valentin to be as much of a threat as Cliff. So David was trying to do too much as other teams weren't giving him good pitches to hit.
It may be my imagination, but Wright got more hittable pitches last night with Green batting behind him. And his going to right was a good sign. That is what he was doing when he was hitting well.

How about Keith and Ron's cynicism when Gary delivered the line about Green waiving his no-trade rights because he knew so many players in the mets clubhouse.

Keith: "I think it might have also had something to do with those 14 games the Mets are up in the standings."

Ron: "Yeah, and with all the player movement these days, you pretty much know someone everywhere you end up."

Me too. Earlier this year I wrote that he "brings nothing to the table" but he does contribute something worthwhile now and then. I think they're expanding his role a bit. At first he seemed to be mostly talking to fans. "Yay! It's great to be at Shea!"

For me, the most surprising broadcasting moment was when Gary couldn't immediately answer one of the easier Aflac Trivia Questions ever. Name the four Mets who won a rookie of the year award.

Ron Darling said, "Three come to mind right away."

(I wouldn't expect Ron to be too much of an expert on Mets trivia from before his time.)

But Gary Cohen echoed that statement. I'm surprised that he didn't remember that Jon Matlack won the 1972 award. Isn't he too young to be having senior moments?
