Bannister looking rusty.......
|
Zvon Aug 25 2006 07:15 PM |
Whew--Howard just crushed one but the wind holds it in the park.

Zvon Aug 25 2006 07:19 PM |
Shaky 1st inning for the rusty Bannister.

I'm cautious about proceeding without an IGT. Two runs home already.

Woodwards trying to give Cleon something to talk about.

Theres some. Most think the Phils would have to make the post season for it to be taken serious. Four more dingers and he passes Mike Schmidt and becomes the Phils single season all time home run leader. It would be typical that the Mets would make the post season and have a bonifide MVP candidate, and a Phils player ends up snaggin it. That wouldnt surprise me at all. Im conditioned that way thru yrs of being a Met fan.

I was 9 at the time, did Schmidt really that THAT big of a year that it didn't matter how far in back the Phils were the writers were going to give him the award? Was it an anti-NY thing or something goofy like the 1998 MFYankees claim they had "25 MVPs" so no Met really stood out?

Beltran gets the Mets on the board with a double bringing LoDuca home from second,104 RBI for Carlos.
|
KC Aug 25 2006 08:04 PM |
Howard has a shot at MVP because there will likely be split votes for players

I honestly dont know what their thinking was. Schmidt did have a monster year, but I didnt think he deserved it. But of course I wanted a Met to get it. And its true that the Mets functioned better as a team. Ray Knight wasnt gonna win an MVP, but he may have been our MVP that season. Carter had a decent season- some nice numbers. I havent hated too many players in all my years watching baseball. I grew to hat Michael Jack Schmidt.

That's one of the arguments against the creation of these "regionalized" divisions that someone's always suggesting. If the Mets were in a division with the Phils, Yanks, & BoSox (an example that's often proposed) then Philly & Boston would both come into town for about 38 games per year. Then you'd REALLY be sick of them

Why no talk about Reyes for MVP? Right now, he gets my vote.
|
metirish Aug 25 2006 08:34 PM |
There is plenty of talk about Reyes for MVP,John Smoltz say's reyes will get his vote.
|
KC Aug 25 2006 08:39 PM |
That's what I meant above, if things continue Beltran and Reyes will split
|
metirish Aug 25 2006 08:39 PM |
Beltran with another home run and it's 4-3 Phillies.......I love you Carlos(sorry I was pissed at you before)

Take that Cleon!

BTW, Abreu's run as a MFY, as well as Ryan Howard's post ASG performance would take the Home Run Derby excuse out of the argument for post HRD slumps FOREVER! (it won't of course)

I was thinking the same thing, 80+ AB's with no home runs..
|
seawolf17 Aug 25 2006 09:35 PM |
Web Gem Woody makes a beaut of a play going to his left to catch a liner off the bat of Abraham Nunez, a few innings after Reyes did the same exact thing to Nunez.

I don't know, it didn't hurt the old 8 team leagues when they did it that way in the 154 game scheds. I think it would add real juice to Yankee-Met games, and not the artifical juice that gets the media and team members (and managers) down on the Subway Series. Though to be honest, the way the media makes Joe Torre out to be, sounds like he'd rather be in KC than with the Yanks with all the big pressure games the Yanks play! So maybe its the media projection an annoyance for high profile matchups!

Yup, and clearly that was just a slump from a Kevin McReynolds/Bobby Bonilla quasi star who was supposed to be THE guy instead of in the constellation

Y'know, it's all well and good to get the strarters rested and play without gripping pressure and to even have a bad night occasionally, but the Phils hardly need any more momentum at this point, considering we gave 'em plenty last time we met.

It was Hispanic Heritage Night at Shea, so they played some nice video tributes to Julio Franco (set to Bob Dylan, Forever Young), Carlos Delgado, Pedro. Endy was also featured on "The Team, The Time, The Profile."
