With one swing, David is at .300 again and sitting on 100 rbi.

Porn Stash follows up with a solo homer. 5-0 in the first.

TransMonk

Jose Valentin says, "Me too!"

KABOOM!

5-0 Mets after 5 minutes.

The pitchers' best friend allows Dave Williams to escape the first inning unscathed.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 09:25 PM

Fogg looks terrible! He just walked Williams to start the 2nd inning, and that was his 3rd walk of the game!

Morgana ran across the field and distracted the batters?

(Yeah, I know. double play)

Fogg is out after 1.2 innings, behind 7-0 and responsible for a runner on first.

TransMonk

4 out outing by Fogg. We'll see some Rocky Mountain relievers tonight.

7-0 Good guys...still top of two.

Hillbilly
Aug 30 2006 09:35 PM

Wow, I can't even check out the start of the game without missing 7 runs. Aren't the Mets getting close to record territory concerning grand slams in season?

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 09:36 PM

Mr. Wright is still cursing out that slump talk as he drives in Beltran with a single. 8-0.

Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.

Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.

Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.

Who'd have thought they'd lead ya (Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Here where we need ya (Here where we need ya)

Yeah we tease him a lot cause we've got him on the spot, welcome back,
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

Dave Williams has his first hit as a Met.

Runners on 1st and 2nd, nobody out in the top of the 3rd.

Last night all nine starters hit. Tonight, it's everybody but Reyes and Green so far.

Choo Freeman scores the Rockies' first run of the game on a very wild pitch.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 10:15 PM

The Mets failed to score in the top of the 4th. Is that allowed?

10-1 going to the bottom of the 4th.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 30 2006 10:18 PM

Thee goes the double digit lead. See what happens when Hillbilly bails on the team?

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 10:20 PM

Now it's 10-2 as Tucker misplays a ball into a triple (but there would have been an RBI on the hit regardless).

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 10:24 PM

Porn Stash just misses his third homer of the night.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 10:29 PM

Williams singles, and scores on Reyes' first hit of the night (we're not sure whether it's a double and error or a triple).

Everyone hits - woo hoo!

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 10:31 PM

Oops - Williams failed to touch third, and his run is cancelled on the appeal play.

Reyes would have had a triple but for the fact that Williams didn't touch third on his way home and he was called out on the appeal play.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 10:54 PM

11-2 Mets after 6 innings. Williams has pitched the whole way so far. Way to keep the pen fresh!

You can see what the Mets found attractive about Affeldt here.

Aug 30 2006 11:10 PM

That's enough, Kaz. You've made your point.

Edgy DC
Aug 30 2006 11:11 PM

Reyes actually should have had a double with a base on an error, as it skimmed under the outfielder's glove. When the play was undone (Williams missed the bag by seven inches and was called out on appeal), the official scorer inexplicably downgraded Reyes' hit to a single.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 30 2006 11:15 PM

According to Gary, who is a stickler for the rule book, it had to be scored a single under those circumstances.

Colorado catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

I guess if Williams never reached third, Reyes can't reach second.

The uniforms the Rockies were wearing last night were the ugliest I've seen since the Astros wore those rainbow colors.

Those white rings around the shoulders were especially girly.

I didn't watch much of the game. Were the announcers answering e-mails again?

Did you think they were uglier than the (ok. so they're manlier) San Diego camos?

Later

Yancy Street Gang
Aug 31 2006 11:50 AM

Yes, even uglier than those.

Those Padre uniforms were ugly, too, but they had some appeal. I liked the beige and green color scheme. It's just the camouflage pattern that was weird.

But the Rockies thing last night was horrendous. I don't mind the vest look. It's not my favorite, but it usually looks okay. But a black vest, with girly white shoulders, over black shirts, was just plain hideous.

If that look ever catches on I'll have to cancel my TV package and start listening to games on the radio again.

Edgy DC
Aug 31 2006 11:53 AM

It does kill more than half the pooint of the vest if it doesn't contrast with the undersleeves.

Yup, that's the thinking.
Gary has an official scorer's book he's been poring over - and it says that if a runner is put out at 3rd by any method then the batter can't get credited with a double.

In this case Williams never legally touched 3rd so Reyes can't be credited with a double.
But also if a runner on 1st played it half-way on an OF fly which finally fell uncaught - and as a result gets tagged out at 3rd with the batter already standing on 2nd because he ran all the way ... it's still a single. If the out at 3rd is the 3rd out it's simply a single; and if it was a 1st or 2nd out I guess he gets credited w/a single plus 2nd on the throw.

And if Williams had missed 2nd then Reyes doesn't get a hit at all.
It's scored like it's a force play.
Now THAT would suck for a rope into the gap. Keith was having stomach pains at the thought.

I don;t think the Rocks in their home black/whites are that ugly at all. Maybe not exciting but not hideous. I prefer it to the puple.

Speaking of which -- UniWatch broke news this week that the D-Baggs are ditching purple and will play in a "sandy type of red with black trim."

Once upon a time, the rosters of teams were stable from year to year and fans became familiar with the players on their teams. Then free agency and increased trading came along adding frequent turnover to rosters so fans ended up rooting for the laundry. Now we've reached the point where the laundry is in a constant state of change as well.

So that puts an end to the awfulness that was the 1998 Expansion, with the Devil Rays rainbow-typeface long gone and the D-back's purple leaving.

Yancy Street Gang
Aug 31 2006 01:27 PM

I like the sound of the Diamondbacks' change. I had no problem with the purple and teal, except that it didn't really fit with the snake and desert theme. It was more like they were trying to pick the trendy colors so they'd sell more merchandise.

I can't picture a "sandy red" (unless they mean a clay color) but I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 31 2006 02:16 PM

Sandy red to me sounds like the Astros "brick" color, but I wish they'd stop pretending they don;t actually belong in orange.
