Things Are Slow

Terrence Long last appeared in the big leagues on June 5th, subbing in the final innings for Johnny Damon as the Yankees battered the Red Sox 13-5.

With him and Fonzie currently not on big-league rosters, that leaves, by my count, nine former Pittsfield Mets active in the bigs. Three never played for the parent Mets. Name those nine, and any others I might've forgotten.

Burnitz.

Edgy DC

We have one. Jeromy cleaned clocks for the 1990 Pittsfielders to the tune of .301 / .447 /.497 // .944.

Jay Payton
Preston Wilson
Paul Wilson

Turk Wendall.

OE: Oops, was from Pittsfield, didn't play for them.

Edgy DC

Jay Payton went .365 / .428 / .498 // .926 all over New York-Penn League pitching for 58 games in 1994. That's two.

Preston Wilson was stoopid for eight games the previous season, going .552 /.580 / .897 / 1.477. Mercy. Three.

Paul Wilson doesn't currently qualify for this quiz, but I think he skipped the P-Mets.

Jason Tyner?

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 03:33 PM

Tyner, like Paul Wilson, was a first-rounder who had no time for the lower level Pittsfielders.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 29 2006 03:35 PM

All the Wilson sisters: Vance Wilson!

Octavio Dotel?!?

Curtis Pride!

HahnSolo
Aug 29 2006 03:37 PM

Was Izzy correct?

AJ Burnett is my only other guess. I can't come up with any more late-90s Met prospects.

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 03:45 PM

Vance chanced upon the Pittsfield dance: 307 /.332 / .416 // .748.

We're just drowning in .300 hitters here. That's four.

Isringhausen I didn't answer. Mr. 44th-Round Draft Choice went 7-4 3.29 in 1993 That's five

Dotel missed Pittsfield. Pride played a season there (after three straight years at Kingsport!). He's on a big-league disabled list, and I had overlooked him, but the judges are going to give you this one. He went merely 259 / .342 / .406 // .748. So that's six of a number now totalling ten.

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 03:48 PM

AJ Burnett is a brilliant answer. A.J. went 3-1, 4.70 in 1997 at age 20.

Seven.

C-Pride is in his 20th year of pro ball this year (10th in the bigs) and he's already announced it'll be his last. He's a two-time Met farmhand and original Met property, plus the only deaf guy, tho the Dodgers have a deaf pitching prospect who's name I can't recall.

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 03:49 PM

Of the three left, one played for the Mets, and he did only briefly. A two-timer though.

Does Kelly Stinnett count?

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 03:52 PM

Nice to see sharpie back.

Melvin, however, toiled in the Houston system before the Mets acquired him from a team based in Taiwan.

I'm sure he can count at least enough to put down the right number of fingers for the pitcher, but he came up through the Cleveland system before the Mets snatched him up as a minor-league free agent.

At least three guys are still out there.

Speaking of Stinnett, I'm still wondering if he's going to get called up from Norfolk by Thursday.

I want to go into October with Castro as the number 2 catcher, but if Ramon isn't ready, I want to go with Stinnett over DiFelice.

Okay, one more guess since I can't seem to stay away...

Ochoa?

Neither of the toolbearing Alexes. Ochoa, you'll recall, came up through the Baltimore system and was acquired for Bobby Bonilla.

Joson Phillips?

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 04:25 PM

I didn't have Joson. But I guess he's back in the bigs. Point for you. Joson scrubbed his way to a .206 / .274 / .303 // .577 season for the 1997 P-Mets.

Still looking for at least three dudes, one of whom was a two-time Met, one of whom never played for the Mets and shouldn't be driving his hot rod Lincoln, and a last never-Met who has played everywhere, man, including Kinetsu of Japan's Pacific League.

Ty Wigginton?

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 04:42 PM

Yes, though not on my list, Ty, in fact, played for Pittsfield: .239 /.287 / .408 // .695. cleonjones11 would probably tell you he was a butcher with the glove also. Sorry to have missed him. My source sucks.

Edgy DC

Marco Scutaro
Angel Pagan

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 29 2006 05:12 PM

Oh, and what's his name: Tyler Walker, 2-time Met or something.

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 05:15 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 29 2006 05:20 PM

Scoots came up through the Injuns system.

Angel Pagan, rather than playing for the doomed P-Mets, I think, was an original Cyclone.

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 05:17 PM

Tyler Walker, while not our two-time Met, was one of the later two I found. Good job. Tyler pitched 2/3 of an inning, yielding two runs, one earned, for the 1997 Pittsfielders. He was the Pitts.

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 05:20 PM

Oh, and the other of the later two was recently mentioned in this space as having been cut from Colorado Springs, so we're back to:

The two-time Met
The Lincoln-owning miscreant
The former Buffalo.

This must be the big first baseman who played for the Red Sox also. Dammit. I can't think of his name.

Aha! Roberto Petagine!

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 29 2006 05:40 PM

Pete Walker, two-time Met

Edgy DC
Aug 29 2006 05:56 PM

Pete Walker, two-time Met, and star of "88 lines aobut 44 Mets" is correct.

We have two non-Mets remaining. I imagine you'll never get them, so I'll end this afternoon diversion with visits from Hector Carrasco and Scott Sauerbeck.
