Wells has a meh 4.98 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 24 K, 8 BB in 47 innings this year but he seems to be turning it around. August: 34 IP, 2.65 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 20 K, 5 BB. And of course, he has a history of fine post-season performances--when he bothers to show up. Postseason: 3.15 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 81 K, 25 BB, 120 IP Rumor has it that he's looking to retire after his current contract is up in November, meaning this would be strictly a two-month rental. Realistically, I'd think the best the Sox could get for him would be a high-ceiling youngster, since they would need to pass through waivers. But I could be wrong.

I was looking for the "No, no, NO, HELL NO!" option but couldn't find it. Two year contract for David Wells = big, fat mistake by Theo Epstein.

Blatt, you had me going for a while. Then I remembered that Roger Clemens is now pitching in the Lone Star (how appropriate) State and that his official (to me) nickname is "Fat Coward, bat tossing mother-fukker". I still voted no. Later

I don't want him, but 16-1 opposed! Wow! I'm an eternal optimist, and feel like Petey, Glavine, El Duque & Maine can take us pretty far in the post season. Having Wells around could conveivably help by, but I'd rather not thin out our farm system just so we can give Boomer three post-season starts.

Well, the one was a latecomer. I assume "Sign him!" means "Trade for him!" I think we have plenty of pitching, and he certainly isn't promising to be any sort of upgrade at this point.

Martinez Glavine Hernandez Trachsel Maine Bannister Williams Pelfrey Perez Soler That's ten more-or-less viable options, without having to invoke Jose Lima or Yusaku Iriki. I think, rather than pressure Omar Minaya to do anything, we owe him a standing O. Whether the Mets advance or not, he did his job in this department, building redundancy (and, in most cases, the right redundancy) into the rotation before the season and during the season.

I'd go with the "hell, no!" option too. Incredibly, Wells can still sometimes come up with some good outings, but he's just as likely to suffer a reoccurance of his back/knee/gout problems too. Or say something stupid. Or do something stupid. I appreciated the ways that he helped the Yankees to win, and his Perfect Game was awesome, but he was always one of my least favorite Yankees.

this team, as edgy has pointed out, has an abundance of medioxre starting pitching. Any trade for or signing of a pitcher that isn't a clear #2 or 3 on this staff is a waste of prospects and/or money.
