I've said it before, but the Cars are like night and day when they change vocalists.

Here are two more or less good songs, both from 1979. With Ocasek on vocals, they pretty much sound like a bad band with a good guitarist:

With Benji on vocals (wearing his hair dark and looking like Alice Cooper), they bring down the house:

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 07 2006 11:05 AM

It's a good point that's overlooked.

I suppose Orr lacked a bit of Ocasek's charisma, or at least he didn't have an act like Ocasek did. Looking back though, Ocasek's act didn't do the Cars a whole lot of long-term good: He seemed to be trying to infuse the Cars with this brand message of "new" and "quirky" neither of which stood the test of time as newer acts were um... newer, and quirkiness as a virtue was wounded first by Overwrought Fake Concern For Others (the Live Aid era) then obliterated by Mopy Self-Pity & Despair (the grunge era).

Sometimes Orr tried to sound like Ocasek. maybe he was trying on his own act. Or maybe he just wasn't good at it: I didn't like that he was pictured licking a lollipop on the back cover of Candy-O.

dgwphotography
Oct 27 2006 07:10 AM

What was wrong with the Andy Kaufman one?

Edgy DC
Oct 27 2006 07:20 AM

Andy was a brilliant performer. Not speaking for Coo' here, but I've seen how the sad awkward immigrant guy can make people really uncomfatrable. He's certainly supposed to, of course, but Andy was so good at it, it could be excruciating for some people, who'd end up looking away before the great payoff (and the Elvis imitatationis was great) could redeem the performance.

Andy broke Elvis as an a subject of mimickry, picking up on things in the King's performances that nobody else ever did. Any good Elvis imitation referenced Andy's after that, and/or became so distorted so as to become merely referential. Andy's was sublime.

Edgy DC
Oct 27 2006 08:03 AM

Look at the moment he's catured... Sort of maybe Elvis shortly after the 1968 comeback special (where a few of the cracks are culled from) --- while Elvis still has a shovelfull fo cool left, but he's realized that there is a whole new career for himself in self-parody.

He's captured Elvis right on the cusp of beautiful and disgusting, terrible and pitiable, and at his most particularly fascinating.

YouTube or utube? Users' mistake crashes website By Thair Shaikh Published: 03 October 2006 Most companies would welcome 70 million people visiting their website every month, but for one small US company selling secondhand tube and pipe machinery, the effects of being mistaken for the hugely popular YouTube have been so disastrous that it is suing the video-sharing website. Universal Tube and Roll-form Equipment Corporation, which employs 17 people and operates the web-site utube.com, has filed a lawsuit asking YouTube - which was bought by Google last month for £883m - either to stop using the address youtube.com, or pay for it to create a new internet domain, which should stop the confusion. Universal Tube, based in Perrysburg, Ohio, said it had lost business after its own site kept crashing because millions of people kept logging on to it by mistake. It was shut down for several days last month following the news of YouTube's sale. It also said the cost of running utube.com had leapt recently - 68 million visited the site in August alone. No, I'm meaning about the wonderful trap and volley off the cross.

The free kick is like a force of will, mentally manipulating the men in the wall to give him a chink exactly where he was putting it. Astounding.

You can coach so much in soccer, but the actual goals are seemingly most often scored with a mindbending act of creativity in action that can't be taught. You can coach them to get the most opportunities, but capitalizing on them is talent and magic, baby.

Crazy wrestling dad breaks up match, throws 11-year-old -

The thing about this is that we saw a dad do the same thing a few weeks ago at a local match, except he merely grabbed his own kid and didn't throw anyone else's.

It's no fun watching your kid lose a wrestling match, but you've gotta get a grip on yourself if you're signing your kid up for this sport!

It's from an orchestrated session they did where McGowan covered of Cave's "Lucy" and Cave covered McGowan' "A Rainy Night in Soho." They needed a signoff duet to make an EP out of it and "WaWW" was a cheap easy choice.

I'll stick this here instead of the Reflections on Music Videos thread. Although I have to reflect, it doesn't really qualify as a music video.

What it is is an amazing clip of Smokey Robinson singing "Cruisin'," in which they demonstrate not only what a wonderful singer he is, but what a beautiful arrangement this song has. First they isolate his lead vocal on verse one, dropping everything else out. Once your mind is blown on that, they, they, they isolate other parts on subsequent verses, just the backing instrumentation on verse two (it almost seems murderous to take Smokey's vocal here out after the silky smoove delivery from verse one), then the lead vocals and harmonies together for the break.

Notice the background vocalists are also his percussion section, and it's not like they're playing inaudible percussion either, but are high in the mix on bongos, timpani, and tamborine. This close reading also lets you hear shockingly frank lyrics like, "I can just STAY there, inSIDE you and LOVE you, BA-by."

Wow. Smokey was the vice president of Motown at the time that Rick James was the last star on their roster, and he was charged with sitting Rick down and asking him to clean up his lyrics. Rick must've been thinking, "Bitch, are you for real?"

Plus while the high-wasted trousersgive him a sixties Motown class, the patchy facial hair gives him a touch of Bob Marley counterculturalitude.

That's soul in 8/8, and it's awesome. You count it 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2, and it slides right down like it's coated in honey.

You know if you took your baby to see Smokey, you were getting loving that night. And it would be good loving, except for the lingering worry... is she loving me... or Smokey?

I've only heard this song about a million times and always thought it was pretty. Never found out what it was called, no idea who the band was (thought it was Aerosmith, but determined I was wrong)

Every time I heard it on the radio I'd ask everyone around "who is that?", nobody ever knew.

Every time I thought to ask one of my kids to listen to this song I was about to hum to them, it'd go clean out of my head.

Finally today I found somebody who knew what it was and I tracked it down...thank you to him.

PS, I NEVER would have been able to guess the title or the band name.

One less thing to keep me awake at night.

No more eating at this Burger King in Ohio

Everyone seen and heard in that video got fired, here is part of story from local newspaper

The Gazette says health officials learned about the "Burger King bather" early Monday morning. "My first thought was oh my God," Mark McDonnell, the Greene County health commissioner, tells WDTN-TV. He sent inspectors to look for violations at the restaurant. "Any bacteria on his skin could have been deposited giving people food poisoning," McDonnell explains to WHIO-TV. The fast-food chain fired everyone who appeared in the video. "We have sanitized the sink and have disposed of all other kitchen tools and utensils that were used during the incident," Burger King spokeswoman Denise Wilson says in a statement to WDTN-TV. "We have also taken appropriate corrective action on the employees that were involved in this video." Tackett tells WHIO-TV they spent more than an hour cleaning the sink. "It's not as nasty as it looks like," he tells WHIO-TV. "I would eat at the Xenia Burger King," he adds.

I find this irresistible -- and it also shows how sexy Ph.D. candidates can be.

Six weeks ago, the Gonzo Scientist challenged researchers around the world to interpret their Ph.D. research in dance form, film the dance, and share it with the world on YouTube (Science, 10 October, p. 186). By the 11 p.m. deadline this past Sunday, 36 dances--including solo ballet and circus spectacle--had been submitted online. A panel of nine judges--the three winners of the first "Dance Your Ph.D." contest, three scientists from Harvard University, and three artistic directors of the dance company Pilobolus--scored the dances on their ability to bridge the art and science worlds. Today, Science announces the winners of the 2009 AAAS Science Dance Contest in four categories: Graduate Students, Postdocs, Professors, and Popular Choice: Graduate Students Sue Lynn Lau chose classical ballet and highly kinetic party dancing as the way to interpret her Ph.D. thesis, "The role of vitamin D in beta-cell function." As The Nutcracker Suite lilts in the background, Lau, a graduate student from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia, appears as the Sugarplum Fairy, delivering marshmallow glucose to four beta cell dancers. Meanwhile, a fifth dancer flings and twirls around the stage--representing the sunlight required for vitamin D biosynthesis.

Relief Pitcher Kenny Powers was poised to rule the Big Leagues, but two things got in the way: his fading fastball and his insufferable personality. After a spectacular career flame-out, Kenny came home to Shelby County, NC and picked up a job as a substitute gym teacher (mostly so his brother Dustin would stop threatening to kick him out). Well, Paul Lynde was on virtually every week. Aside from that was Kristofferson and Redd Foxx. Hard to say if they have the actual players inside the ccostumes for Chewy and the droids, but I'm going to be dubious.

The sexy imperial minions at Lynde's command were likely the Ice Angels, the house ice skating crew, and the storm troopers were most definitely the remaining Osmond Brothers --- who were part of the show's production team and always on standby tto appear as needed.

(I will remember this as the day I turned into Steve.)

You know how when you get a song in your head and it won't go away unless you hear it?
Today "Windy" was going through my mind. Gosh, what a sweet song; it reminds me of my mom when she was very young, because I remember how much she liked it.

So today it's going through my mind and I know I'm not going to hear it on the radio anytime soon so I Youtubed it.
