The All-Purpose No-Purpose Thread (Apropos of Nothing)

Willets Point
Aug 23 2006 11:51 AM
Edited 2 time(s), most recently on Sep 21 2006 11:38 AM

I'm going to lock up the Next to Nothing thread since it is reaching critical mass. So place all your Apropos of Nothing thoughts here.

As an experiment, when an Apropos of Nothing post inspires response (say 3 or more responses) thus becoming apropos of something I'm going to split those off and make a new thread. This will help

1. Make it easier to find things and archive them (for example if you're looking for a conversation on burritos you'd find it more easily in the "Burrito Thread" than in the APNP Thread.
2. Stimulate further discussion on interesting topics.
3. Keep Apropos of Nothing truly Apropos of Nothing.

I think Apropos of Nothing should be called the All-Purpose No-Purpose Thread.

I've been mulling a concept that I'd like to see pulled off: The Hippy Olympics. Events would include hacky sack, building bongs from household objects, ultimate frisbee and macrame. There'd also be freestyle dancing and jam band competitions. Of course, being hippies, many of the events would be non-competitive. There would be teams representing all the great hippy towns: Northampton, Ithaca, Berkley, Boulder, Ann Arbor, Austin, Asheville, et al. I think it would be a great event. Of course, I'd need some capital to get this started, but then the hippies wouldn't trust me for being a capitalist pig.

Why the hell does my car window have to break (it's askew and won't close completely, which means I won't be able to drive the friggin' thing in the rain!) during a holiday weekend and right before the week that everyone, including me, goes back to school? I had a ton of unstructured time over the past few weeks - if the fucking thing was going to break, why couldn't it have done so then?

At a glance, I thought the key word in this Yahoo news headline was "rabbits," and I clicked on it to figure out why Jewish leaders were discriminating against bunnies.

Nymr83
Sep 07 2006 09:05 PM

this is only part of a much larger problem in conservative judaism. while orthodox judaism follows the letter of the rules and reform judaism basically says "do as you please" the conservative movement seems to continuosly be torn between extremes, and nothing that they officially do will make even half their "constituents" happy.

i'm suprised that they are actually ready to tell the individual congregations to do what they are comfortable with (as opposed to either forcing gays to stay out or forcing unwilling congregations to accept them.) you can't make everyone happy, but this will probably make more people happy than either of the alternatives. maybe we need some of these scholars in government to sort our other messes out.

Song: For Good Lyrics
ELPHABA
I'm limited:
Just look at me - I'm limited
And just look at you -
You can do all I couldn't do, Glinda
So now it's up to you
(spoken) For both of us
(sung) Now it's up to you:

GLINDA
I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you:

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

ELPHABA
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend:
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you:

GLINDA
Because I knew you:

BOTHI have been changed for good

ELPHABA
And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done you blame me for

GLINDA
But then, I guess we know
There's blame to share

BOTH
And none of it seems to matter anymore

GLINDA ELPHABA
Like a comet pulled Like a ship blown
From orbit as it Off it's mooring
Passes a sun, like By a wind off the
A stream that meets Sea, like a seed
A boulder, half-way Dropped by a
Through the wood Bird in the wood

BOTH
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
I do believe I have been changed for the better?

GLINDA
And because I knew you:
ELPHABA
Because I knew you:

BOTH
Because I knew you:
I have been changed for good.

]Pitchers Tim Hudson and Barry Zito strolled to the pitcher's mound and sat down, right there on the elevated patch of dirt. They joined the crowd in watching the Angels-Mariners game on the big screens high above the outfield corners. Finally, at 10:18 p.m, the A's got their prize. Anaheim's Tim Salmon hit a home run to eliminate Seattle from the West race and send A's players prancing back onto the field. Many of them took an impromptu victory lap, soaking in applause from the crowd.

Did that in college once, since we had to dial 9 first, I'd transpose the 1 and 9 for 914, so the operator hears me punch in the rest of the number I dialed and exasperatly says "911, WHAT is your emergency?" I sheepishly say "Wrong number" the operator actually said "Go FUCK yourself!"

Hey my friend
It seems your eyes are troubled
Care to share your time with me
Would you say you're feeling low and so
A good idea would be to get it off your mind

See you and me
Have a better time than most can dream
Have it better than the best
So we can pull on through
Whatever tears at us
Whatever holds us down
And if nothing can be done
We'll make the best of what's around

Turns out not where but who you're with
That really matters
And hurts not much when you're around
And if you hold on tight
To what you think is your thing
You may find you're missing all the rest

Well she ran up into the light surprised
Her arms are open
Her mind's eye is

Seeing things from a
Better side than most can dream
On a clearer road I feel
Oh you could say she's safe
Whatever tears at her
Whatever holds her down
And if nothing can be done
She'll make the best of what's around

Turns out not where but what you think

I had the best evening. My 6-year-old grandson Josh had been trying to reach me by phone all day, which was not something that had ever happened before. Should I be worried? No, a 6-year-old doesn't call to tell you his mom's been in an accident. But what was it? He even called Mrs. Mole (who's visiting her parents in Maine) on her cell phone, to get a message to me. Finally, I got the message and called back.

He wanted to play Internet pool with me.

It took a while to set it up. We couldn't play on Yahooligans, because you can't arrange to meet in a room. So I fixed him up a Yahoo ID (gotta tell his mom that I did that). talked him through signing on to Yahoo and getting to the games area, then the pool area. We played all evening. One of the best evenings of my life.

Have I ever mentioned my theory of life, the universe, and faith? God tests us by throwing the most incredible amount of shit at us for the first 50 years or so of our lives, and then to prove that He really loves us, he gives us grandchildren.

And you know what? It's all the proof you need.

Seminole Tribe buying Hard Rock Cafe for $965M
Friday, December 08, 2006
BY ADRIAN SAINZ
Associated Press
MIAMI -- The Seminole Tribe of Florida said yesterday it was buying the famed Hard Rock business, including its casinos, restau rants, hotels and huge collection of rock 'n' roll memorabilia, in a groundbreaking $965 million deal with a British company.

The deal with London-based Rank Group is believed to be an American Indian tribe's first purchase of a major international corporation of its size, the Seminoles said. It includes 124 Hard Rock Cafes, four Hard Rock Hotels, two Hard Rock Casino Hotels, two Hard Rock Live! concert venues and stakes in three unbranded hotels.

Our school district is annoyingly big on ethnicity projects. On Friday, my 8th grader is supposed to bring in something for their International Food Festival. This is supposed to be a favorite ethnic dish to represent our cultural background.

This well-intentioned project is driving me nuts. All of my grandparents were born in America. All of D-Dad's grandparents were born in America. Furthermore, they were all born at a time when assimilation was the goal of immigrant families. To top things off, I'm a mutt and D-Dad is a mutt and there is no one nationality that can possibly represent this kid.

So I'm sending in an apple pie. It represents America. It also represents Washington State, which is a closer part of the kid's ancestry than any country where his great-great-grandparents were born.

It'll be my fault that the kid will flunk this project. But at this point I'm beyond caring.

Am I the only one who stops as a pedestrian for cars heading in the same direction that I am walking?

I swear it's like some people are looking to get hit or something!

Never mind of course when it's one of the few times I fail to notice a car from behind they whizz by me making no attempt to change course slightly or slow down. So maybe I'm also the only one it seems who does that as well!

metsmarathon
Dec 27 2006 07:38 PM

let me make sure i understand the setup here...

you're walking in the street, presumably one with a shoulder, which you are in, and are heading in the same direction as traffic, and cars whizz by you. but if you hear the car coming, you pause, allow it to safely pass, and then resume walking in the shoulder in the same way you were heading?

first off, whenever possible, you should be walking against traffic instead of with traffic, especially if you're listening to music (if you are - i don't know). but i don't follow that all too tightly when i run. on main roads i run against traffic, unless that traffic is coming downhill. then i run with it. minor roads, i'm right there in the middle of the road.

but whenever i'm on a road with a speed limit of 40 mph or so, and with a shoulder, i always run just over the white line, so that i'm actually in the traffic lane.

its ballsy, and not what you'd tell your kids to do, (but you're an internet stranger, so its okay! :p ), but it works. here's why - when you're in the shoulder, the idiots whizzing by know that as long as they're in their lane, they won't hit you unless they've got big ol' trailering mirrors. and most people assume their in their lane! when you SHARE their lane, all of a sudden, the driver no longer trusts that his depth perception is sufficient to avoid marring his paint with your corpse, and swings a wide berth. the trick to doing this of course, is to run against traffic, so that you can also move towards the shoulder as the car approaches - affording you an extra safety buffer.

if i'm running with traffic, i'm far more cautious in the execution of this strategy, and make sure that if i don't think i can hear when a car is coming behind me, i stay in the shoulder. but i only stop if there's a big truck passing next to me, more for his peace of mind than for mine.

And I wouldn't use the downstairs bathroom unless it was truly an emergency. brrr.

'Kelloggs is not responsible for injuries sustained while using this device'
... which sets me to thinking of the process that causes them to put that in:
- some guy gets this thing with his morning breakfast and, because of it, decides to take up a walking program
- on one of his walks he gets too close to the road and gets side-swiped by a car
- he then sues the cereal giant based on the reasoning that the cereal giant giving this trinket away is what caused his injuries.

We just had some excitement in our neighborhood. Four Rocky Mount Police cars pulled into the neighborhood with lights flashing. They parked in front of the house diagonally across from our house. A few minutes later a Canine unit pulled up and let the dog out.

One of my neighbors walked to the street corner and stood in the edge of my yard to see what was happening. A police appeared to speak with him briefly and my neighbor took off running back toward his house. After 4-5 minutes, the police cars one by one turned off their lights and left the neighborhood. I have no idea what took place. It will be interesting to see if anything is on the news tonight.

Give him a decongestant shortly before the plane takes off. It will make his ears less likely to pop. Painful ear popping is one of the hardest things about flying for little kids. Plus, the decongestant will make him drowsy. (Added benefit!)

Does he have his own ticket or is he flying as a "lap child"?

Bring along a few favorite toys to serve as a distraction on the plane, but try to avoid things with parts that will fall down and roll under the seats. And even if he has his own ticket, don't be surprised if he spends a lot of time on your lap.

Why are you hearing Bil... that name?

SteveJRogers
Jun 01 2007 05:25 PM

The latest example of why college coaches are considered the scum of the earth by the general mass media.

Billy Donovan formerly of the back-to-back NCAA hoop champ Florida Gators just jumped to the NBA's Orlando Magic, not even two months after signing a long-term contract to stay with Florida and spurning the Kansas Jayhawks who were enticing him during the Final Four.

Essentially you are hearing the usual "no honor amongst theives" statements bashing the "culture of coaches" that is very prevelant in basketball and football, both levels, where coaches can do whatever the hell they want because they are viewed as being even bigger than the insitiution (or professional team) they work for.

Especially in college where a coach can jump a contract and have no penalty, while a kid has to sit out a year if they decide to transfer to a new school. So you have alot of "where is the fairness" not to mention part of the outcry is the fact that Donovan probably sold new recruits a bill of goods on the basis that he'd be there all 4 of their years at Florida. Hearseay but generally you hear this kind of statement all the time about the sales pitch, a famous one of is of Lou Saban formerlly of LSU and the Dolphins told a freshman that he would in fact be there all 4 years of his (the frosh's) time there, a few days later he was heading to the NFL and the Dolphins!

I haven't heard that yet, but then again I'm listening to mostly baseball talk orientated shows.

It also depends on the host as well, the aforementioned "scum of the earth" lines are generally from screaming liberals who either aren't fans of college sports anyway like Wally Mathews and Michael Kay, or just anti coaches and pro "student athletes" especially in light of the coaches getting multi-million dollar contracts while the athletes can't get any kind of compensation despite being the faces of the institutions.

Other than that, it is pretty much WTFC. Not sure where I stand, or why everytime a coach jumps everyone acts like the coach just murdered their families, its like a CEO of a major firm says "I'm never leaving here, you'd have to pry my cold dead hands off of my desk" then all of a sudden a better offer comes by and he decides to take it.

In other words, no I don't know if this opinion has been said by various media members, but knowing certain media members it isn't a stretch to suggest that they are taking Donovan to task for jumping to the Magic just two months after seeming so sincere about staying at Florida.

I know, I say it things like that often. Quite often then taking the imaginary opinion makers to task for having said opinions before they've even been said yet!

Sorry I opened up this strange rabbit hole.

I grew up around the corner from Billy. He was the pudgy guy who'd hang out at the playground and practice dunking on the nine-foot rims. Seemed kind of a loser, but that loner-time paid off and he developed a heck of a shot if he was open. St. Agnes was a long Island powerhouse with a tiny gym. They'd push it up the court and if they didn't have a shot off the break they'd push it back and Billy would bury a trailing jumper. He scored enough to get himself a Providence scholarship and we thought we'd never hear from him again.

But sometime before junior year he blossomed into something else, and suddenly he was leading the team deep into the tournament. I don't know if he made Pitino or Pitino made him, but I hold it against him because Pitino's always seemed kind of jerky to me, but Pitino did give him a job for a year as the Knicks' backup point man. He was overmatched, but I was starting to get used to his way of catching up to the competition if you gave him a few years. I wondered if he might have again if he hung around the NBA long enough.

Now he's caught up to Pitino.

* Not surprising that ESPN media (radio, TV, magazine, whatever) has been Billy Donovan central lately. The Bristol crew lives for college hoops and are likely to treat this as the biggest news since the Lindbergh landing.

* "Anti-College coaching media" ?!?!?!??
In general the sports media LOVES college coaches and treats them as demi-gods, particularly those who work the college hoops scene. A coach could committ armed robbery in broad daylight and there are those (many of them ex-coaches themselves) who would excuse it because; "he runs a great program"

* I don't think Donovan actually signed a contract extension. I could be wrong about this but I think one was on the table but he put it off.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 21 2007 07:04 AM

Nobody actually stops. They probably do just take that "quick glance" but that ends up slowing everyone down.

Here's my theory: every car has to go slightly slower than the car in front of it. (If you go faster, you would end up crashing or bumping into the car you're trailing.) So if a driver slows down just a little for that glance, then the car behind it has to slow down a little bit more, and so on, and so on.

The red and black shirts, with text that says "VICK 'EM" on the front in an apparent reference to the Aggies' slogan "Gig 'em," was created by a Tech student who was trying to sell them before Saturday's game in Lubbock. The back of the shirt shows a football player wearing the No. 7 Vick jersey holding a rope with an image of the mascot Reveille at the end of a noose. Vick, who faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to a federal dogfighting charge, is suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

There is a co-worker of mine who has a passing resemblance of KC. Bald, same type of face and build pretty much. Maybe a smaller frame, but anyway. The funny thing is that show --- being a Marshall production --- was guilty of every shark-jumping sin there is. It (1) switched sets, (2) switched back and forth from canned laughter to live audience, (3) forced network-contracted non-stars onto the show to plug themselves, (4) used the same old guest actors in different roles, (5) didn't give a fig about continuity, using (5a) multiple backstories about how Oscar and Felix met, and (5b) multiple kid actors to play Felix's kids.

I think they even changed the age and number of his kids. And Felix's father and parrot had the same name. And what's with that parrot? He never had a parrot before, then the parrot dies, has an awesome funeral (in which the undertaker actor had appeared before in different roles), wakes up, a la "Finnegan's Wake," and then we never hear of it again.

And yet, the show never jumped.

Its more that she is an O'Reilly disciple than the principle of it and she is using it as a reason for doing it, yes I agree cutting down on your oil bill is a good thing, especially during a mild time in the season, but it is more that she pays attention to someone that probably 99% of the country takes seriously.

President Bush went up to the man and said, 'Has anyone told you that you look like Moses?' The man didn't answer. He just kept staring straight ahead. The president said, 'Moses!' in a loud voice. The man just stared ahead, never acknowledging the president. The president pulled a Secret Service agent aside and, pointing to the robed man, asked him, 'Am I crazy or does that man not look like Moses to you? The Secret Service agent looked at the man and agreed. 'Well,' said the president, 'Every time I say his name, he ignores me and stares straight ahead, refusing to speak. Watch!' Again the president yelled, 'Moses!' and again the man ignored him. The Secret Service agent went up to the man in the white robe and whispered, 'You look just like Moses. Are you Moses?' I was in it last weekend, going 37 mph, in the Lincoln Tunnel, with less than a half-tank of gas, when the odometer turned 88,888. "Gimmee the camera! Gimmee the camera!"

is it even legal to drive a camel in NY? I've always thought they were a
somewhat majestic creature and that water retention thing is cool but they're
also kinda nasty and spit at people and camel crap can't be too good for the
general public healthiness of city thoroughfares.

Can you picture how a guy would get to LaGuardia on a camel?

Cop: Ok Mac, where do you think you're going?
Camel Guy: I go to blow up the airplanes.

Did anyone else hear that a private plane carrying Tony Blair almost got shot down? The idiot pilot failed to contact, and later failed to respond to, israeli air-traffic controllers while Blair's plane was flying from sharm el sheik to the west bank, the IAF scrambled two fighters which would probably have shot the plane down had it not responded following their flyby of the plane.

It is however, too long of a walk to start at 5:30, when you have to get back to Union Station to catch a 7:00 train back to a suburb of San Diego!

]The worlds of rock 'n' roll, NASCAR and video games will collide June 29 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway when Dario Franchitti's No. 40 Dodge will sport a Guitar Hero: Aerosmith paint scheme. Revealed on Wednesday, the car doesn't actually depict members of the band, but rather just the game and band logos along with rock-loving fans throwing the goat. (That's, you know, the hand gesture seen on the side panel on the car ... anyway.) I'm more than sure that there will be diecast replicas made of this car like most other special paint schemes -- after all, there's already a promotion planned involving the video game at Target stores (Franchitti's sponsor). Buyers there can get an exclusive game bundle for the Nintendo Wii. These diecasts would be perfect for autograph collectors -- what would be more unique than an Steven Tyler-signed stock car? Believe it or not, this is not the first time that the Boston rockers have had a NASCAR tie-in (or toy car). In 1999, Kenny Wallace drove a No. 55 Chevy with the band's logo on the hood.

I have one of the Kenny Wallace cars in my office. Looks like I'll need to buy this one too.

Wikipedia says:

]Chinese authorities officially refer to K2 as Qogir; simplified Chinese: 乔戈里峰; traditional Chinese: 喬戈里峰; pinyin: Qiáogēlǐ Fēng. This name is derived from Chogori, a synthetic name made up by Western explorers early in the 20th century from two Balti words, chhogo ('big') and ri ('mountain') (شاہگوری).[3] Other names include Mount Godwin-Austen (Urdu: ماؤنٹ گڈون آسٹن),[4][5] Lamba Pahar ("Tall Mountain" in Urdu), Dapsang, Kechu or Ketu (Urdu: کے ٹو), the latter two of which are both derived from "K2"[3][6]).

]SYDNEY, Australia - A 7-year-old boy broke into a popular Outback zoo, fed a string of animals to the resident crocodile and bashed several lizards to death with a rock, the zoo's director said Friday. The 30-minute rampage, caught on the zoo's security camera, happened early Wednesday after the boy jumped a security fence at the Alice Springs Reptile Center in central Australia, said zoo director Rex Neindorf. The child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoo's beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to "Terry," an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile, said Neindorf. The boy also fed several live animals to Terry by throwing them over the two fences surrounding the crocodile's enclosure, at one point climbing over the outer fence to get closer to the giant reptile.

Once a couple of years ago the wife and I were at an outdoor festival. Very family friendly affair, lots of kids, petting zoo, hayrides, etc.

So we're waiting in line for a horse and carriage ride and a father is in line in front of us with his two sons. They were probably 8 and 6, give or take a few years. The older son is wearing one of these shirts that shows you his bones - arms, ribcage, etc, as where they would be on your body. Common enough.

Except the kid turns around, points slowly at the line formed behind him (10-12 people), and says in an even keel, "I will kill all of you." Very matter-of-fact and calmly. Yikes!

The dad quickly grabbed him by the ear and admonished him. It was chilling. Fwife now watches the local news on a regular basis waiting for an update on "creepy bones kid."

There are few things about driving that bother me as much as when I see a normally walking human being get out of a car that he or she parked into a handicap spot.

I swear I so want to go up to the next person I see do this and say:

“Hello, you notice the glasses I’m wearing? Good. I wear them because I have poor eyesight. I can’t drive without them, in fact, because of my bad eyesight; I’ve been told that I should be restricted to local driving, and not at all at nighttime. Got it? Good. I say this because I do not look at this handicap as a true handicap, and I do not let it affect any part of my life, even driving.

But bottom line is, I probably do have the right, technically, to apply for one of those mirror hanging signs, and to park in any handicap space in this darn country. Again I don’t because I choose not to let my eye handicap affect what I do. And I believe those spaces were made for those physically unable to walk and such. So please for the love of all things holy, you had better be in the same position as I am, because so help me God I feel like taking my car and ramming it right into your handicap parking one.

Good day!”

Needed to let that out as I parked next to a space this morning, saw a woman take it, and walked out like it was no big deal.

Since the series started in 1999, the government has minted a quarter for each state for only 10 weeks. Then the dies are destroyed, never to be used again, and they begin on the next state.
Did you know that there were two state quarters that the government refused to strike?
The first was the 1999 Delaware quarter. The next one 2003 Missouri design.
Both designs were modified by the government from the original artwork approved by the States and submitted for striking.

Dec 28 2008 08:32 PM

So Saturday I decide to take 2 of my 3 kids skiing for the day. We decide to drive the extra hour and go all the way up to Massachusetts instead of only going one hour away to one of the rinky-dink hills in CT that we usually hit for these day-trip events.

We go to Ski Butternut in Great Barrington, MA. Its raining when we get there but soon clears up and turns in to not such a bad day. It's a good size hill and all the trails are open. The lift ticket prices are expensive ($55 for an all-day adult, $45 for each of the kids) but no different than any comparable place (including the rinky-dinks).

When we stop for lunch a mountain employee comes over and asks if I'll do a quick survey. Sure, why not? Are we having fun? Do we think its a good value? How far did we drive? Where do we usually ski, etc... We talk for a little while and she tells me that Butternut with the support of the surrounding community is making a push to attract exactly the type of people we are - skiiers from southern CT that usually go to the hills closer to us. She tells me that they are marketing aggresively and are very aware to the fact that they want our experience to be so much better that we will drive the extra hour to come here.

Well, you know, so far so good. We're having fun, there are no crowds, its a bigger mountain, the people are nice enough.

Great, right? So end of the day we load back up in the mini-van and start on our way home. I swear I'm not 10 minutes away from the place when I get pulled over for going 58 in a 45. Cop sees the kids in the car, we're all dressed in ski clothes, skis in the back of the car. Obviously we've just spent the day at Butternut - you know the place the community is rallying around to try to lure skiiers that don't usually go there?

He doesn't really engage me just gives me the facts and writes me up for a $180 ticket and says, 'slow down' before sending me on my way.

Fine, I'm totally guilty, I was absolutely speeding, no question. But if a community is attempting to stimulate some economic growth by trying to get repeat and continued business from people who must travel a good hundred miles and drive past competition in order to reach them, don't you think a warning in this case would've been more appropriate?

I mean we had a great day and this is the lasting impression of my Saturday in their town. Kind of stupid and shortsighted on the police department's part if you ask me.

Dec 28 2008 08:59 PM
