MTV Awards

This is a place holder for those of you who are more in tune with today's music than I.

I only caught about five minutes of the show when channel surfing. It happened to be Shakira's live number.

She has a rich, unique voice, the kind you would listen to even if you weren't watching her gyrate those wonderful hips. I know she's made some Spanish language records and is a big International star. I hope one day she will "cross over" to another genre and prove her staying power as an artist.

As Metirish memorably described her: "She's got an ass and a half...damn!"

Re: MTV Awards

I love the VMAs. They're appointment viewing for us every year, even though we feel like we're slowly losing touch with the pop & rap scenes. Every year, they really raise the bar in terms of technical spectacles, and I think last night was no exception. Loved the simultaneous "backstage" web cast, and I loved the way they used the walls and the facades of the upper tiers of seats, projecting images and using the running video boards.

But honestly, I thought the production was too overdone for TV; some of it didn't read well. For instance, when the Pussycat Dolls accepted their award, they projected the words "HOT' and "PANTS" on either side of the stage. Problem was, the camera angle they used only showed the word "PANTS," which didn't make any sense out of context. It was only after they were walking off stage, when they switched to the other side camera, that we figured it out. (Admittedly, still odd, but whatever.)

Shakira already has an enormous amount of staying power as an artist. Just the fact that she can release a Spanish-language album and have it hit #1 in this country is outstanding; never mind that she can hold her own in just about any situation, whether she's singing with Wyclef Jean or rocking the hell out of "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" at the Aerosmith MTV Icon show a few years back. She can bring it, no matter what she's doing. Hell, she was nominated for just about every non-rock award last night.

I haven't watched MTV or VH1 or any of that crap in 15 years and I'm not gonna start now

The only reason I didn't wind up watching it was that no one came to my house, sat on my chest, then stuck a gun in my ear forcing me to turn it on.
And even if they had I still would have flipped a coin.

I've never been into awards shows or music videos, so put em both together and ...

Since you all seem enjoy your status as pop culture pariahs, y'all missed OK Go performing a live version of their "Do What You Want" video:

One of the guys from OK Go was on The Colbert Report last week.

It's like intentional kitch - it's made to be mocked, but lovingly.
