What's Willie Going to Get?

Willie Randolph is about to complet the second year of a three-year contract at $600K per. Omar Minaya says he wants to sign him to an extension rather than him going into a lame-duck season. What he gets obviously is based in part on how 2006 turns out, but on a lot of other factors. What makes these things fascinating is that you can't just look at what Tony LaRussa and Clint Hurdle make as a guide. Lacking the hard data with which we judge players, different organizations vary wildly on their judgment of managers, but also even how much to value a manager at all, even if you like his work. Billy Beane sure looks like he knew what he was doing when he cut Art Howe loose in the middle of a successful run, because the team's success wasn't worth over-rewarding the manager to him.

I'm going to guess he gets a two-year extension for $2 mills per. Two-point-six if the trophy comes home.

OE: And a $3 million option on a third year.

That sounds about right. I don't think I'd want to sign him beyond 2009 either, but I wouldn't be surprised if a World Series win (or even a World Series loss) gets him extended through 2010.

Maybe he'll be paid in small bills.
