I just received word that the daughter of my friend and colleague lost her battle with leukemia this afternoon. She is survived by her parents and three older siblings.

Ashlyn Lankford was 10 years old.

I don't really know what to say other than cute kids should be
allowed to grow up.

I'm really sorry.

I see online they had a site to raise funds for her care. If they're still accepting donations, I'd be happy to contribute.

I believe the website was started as a school project by the teachers and students of the elementary school Ashlyn attended. I will check to see if they are still in need of funds and let anyone that is interested know what I find out in the next few days.

I attended Ashlyn's funeral service earlier this evening. Both her parents and her three older siblings seemed to be holding up remarkably well given the circumstances. Her teacher gave a beautiful eulogy to "a child radiated life" through her spirit and enthusiasm.

I spoke with Ashlyn's father briefly yesterday afternoon. He said that he greatly appreciated the outpouring of love and gifts extended by the community during Ashlyn's illness. He said the family was doing as well as could be expected and requested that anyone wishing to make donations, please make them to the Childrens Hospital at UNC - Chapel Hill in order to benefit other sick children and their families..

I appreciate the concern shown by all of you for a little girl that you never met. It's great to know we have so many wonderful people that frequent this board.
