Somebody says to you, "Phil Silvers."

.. I think both "Sgt. Bilko" and "A Strange Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".

Why on earth do you ask?

I saw a picture of the Dali Lama in the newspaper and thought for a moment that it was Phil Silvers.

I hadn't heard his name in a long time, and I wanted to see how well remembered he was.

Not only does he look like the Dali Lama, he also looks a little bit like the guy on the right:

Phil Silvers was a force of nature in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

Not only did he look like Mr. Slate, he bore an eerie resemblance to Mr. Cogswell (Spaceley's arch-nemesis) on the Jetsons.

It's like his act hit was so inculturated by the early sixties, that he became the model --- via conscious or unconscious choices --- for every amoral character on film or television.

I think that may be right. Just like the guy who Jack Benny always encountered was the model for snotty salesclerks.

Yesterday Darryl was compared to Dino, today Phil Silvers to Mr. Slate, this could be the start of something big

What do I think of?

Sgt Bilko and 'Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World'

Although when I think of 'I.a.M.M.M.M.W.' I usually just start laughing.

One story told years ago on the Johnny Carson show was that Silvers had a near legendary ability to crack Jack Benny up -- anytime, anywhere, over almost anything. Benny, of course, was aware of this and, as such, treaded lightly whenever Silvers was around knowing a bomb could be dropped on him at any moment.

So one day they're both working in different parts of the same studio complex in the early days of TV and run into each other in the studio cafeteria at lunch time.
Benny, who's been rehearsing for a variety show skit, is in full indian costume; we're talking head-dress with feathers, war-paint, bucksin coat, moccasins, the whole works. So Silvers sidles up to him while loading his tray with food and casually says; "Oh hi Jack". Then, pausing for a moment while he apparently notices the garish outfit for the first time, adds; "... Working?"

Benny was quickly on the floor rolling around in what was to be his lunch over Silver's little one-word zinger.

And maybe even Max Bialystock in The Producers.

Frayed, I've heard many similar stories about George Burns cracking Jack Benny up.

Jack was a guy who enjoyed a huge laugh.
