There's a decent chance that the Mets will clinch the division tomorrow when they're idle.

If the Phills sweep today and the Mets win tonight won't they clinch it then?

ScarletKnight41

You mean the Phillies need to be swept today and the Mets to win for the Mets to win the division today.

Yes indeed,thanks.

It'll be a weird feeling rooting for Atlanta.

MK would just advise you to root for 27 innings. Let both teams finish the day with bodies on the field.

Yes, they can clinch today.

But my point was, if that doesn't happen, it could very well come tomorrow.

seawolf17

But I want them to clinch today. I want to come into work in blue and orange with my blinky Mets pin tomorrow. I've waited eighteen years for this.

Valadius
Sep 13 2006 01:55 PM

Yeah, and I was only one year old the last time this happened. I obviously don't remember it.

Yancy Street Gang
Sep 13 2006 01:56 PM

I do too, of course. I'm certainly not rooting for them to clinch on a day off.

I want Atlanta to sweep the Phillies (and I won't feel "odd" at all rooting for the Braves) and I want the Mets win over Florida to end after the conclusion of the doubleheader in Atlanta.

But if they don't clinch tonight, I hope it happens on Friday. And I hope that the Phillies win on Friday, so the clinch can come with the 27th out of a Mets victory.

By the way, I was at the clincher in 1988. It was fun but not as memorable as I thought it would be.

See, now that would be a reason for me to root for Philadelphia...

I've been reading out-of-town scores recently, and how about Frank Freaking "Kiss It Goodbye" Thomas? He's got more homers in September than Ryan Howard and at one point hit one in like six straight games. Who knew there was life in that body?

Besides Billy Beane.

come to think of it, i've got something of a blue-and-orange theme going for me today...

Braves draw first blood. RBI double by Andruw scores Aybar. 1-0 Braves still batting in the first.

Sep 13 2006 05:07 PM

And already two more runs are in, thanks in part to an error by Utley.

So far so good for a Wednesday clincher!

Davies homers in the bottom of the second.

4-0 Atlanta.

Double by Renteria scores Aybar.

5-0 Atlanta.

The Phillies are on the board on Ryan Howard's sac fly. However, Misspelled Andrew's well timed leap saved at the minimum an extra base hit, if not a grand slam.

I go away for a while and when I come back the Phillies have scored three runs.

Braves up 5-3 and batting in the bottom of the third.

ScarletKnight41

Don't go away any more!

ScarletKnight41

The Evil Braves still lead the Phuckin Phillies 5-3 in the 7th.

7 outs to go!

I'm dying watching the Turner South feed for this game. People mock the
YES/SNY concept but these guys are just plain funny. There's two or three
commercials for the Braves they loop through and now the two announcers
are lamenting how society is wrong for only embracing champions and not
teams that achieve the playoffs year after year after year but come up short.

My South, My Braves ... my yuck

Top of the Braves order due up

Though a Brave loss does lower the magic number for a Wild Card.

Funny, the Braves are in the position we've been in plenty of times in recent years. Close in the Wild Card race, but too many teams to climb over, specifically in other divisions that are no longer on the schedule

SteveJRogers
Sep 13 2006 07:24 PM

Anyone know why Chipper Jones is not in the first game? Like I said, they do have an outside shot of the Wild Card. I mean we'd be annoyed if Wright was sitting the first game of this kind of Double Header

SteveJRogers
Sep 13 2006 07:33 PM

Well if the Braves win the night cap, Mets win tonight and the Braves win tomorow, the Mets won't have to do a damned thing

I'm sorry, I WANT AN ON FIELD CELEBRATION! Not in an airport in Pittsburgh, PA!

ScarletKnight41

I'll take the division whenever it comes - off day or not.

It's bad karma to wish against things that ultimately benefit the Mets.

I'm not wishing, I'm just saying thats what I prefer.

I like knowing the lineage of Joe Torre and Chico Walker being future Mets after grounding out in the respective 69 and 86 clincher. I liked hoping that we could sign Lance Parrish one day to keep that "lineage" going after 1988

Phillies have a 5-2 lead in the 7th of game 2.

Good. The more I see the Marlins the more I want the Phillies to win the WC.

I'd rather not see another NL East team as the Wild Card! 1999 is the only time the NL Wildcard winner did not manage to make it to the World Series! Granted they did lose to the NL East winner in the NLCS, but man did they put up a FIGHT!

I don't think it's going to matter.

The NLDS road games will be on a weekend anyway. There won't be any 11 p.m. start times for the Mets.

You mean the times the Wild Card Winner has come from the East. 4 times out of 10 wild cards isn't exactly a large sample size.

Do we now have to thank the Phillies for taking two because the Mets won't clinch on an off day?
