Time to get this damn clinching business overwith. And if they have any self-respect, after this weekend's ignominy, there will be no champagne, no celebration, nothing more than an ordinary win.

Valadius
Sep 18 2006 06:45 PM

The champagne's probably gone bad anyway.

KC
Sep 18 2006 06:47 PM

I don't buy that self-respect notion - they had a good season and deserve to
drink and splash around in a couple dozen cases of bubbly if they win.

Yancy Street Gang
Sep 18 2006 06:48 PM

The 1986 Mets had a similar delay, and they had a big clinching celebration.

Willets Point
Sep 18 2006 06:49 PM

I just remember that we all ragged on Torre and the Yankees for celebrating when they backed into the playoffs with 87 wins in 2000, I figured I'd be hypocritical to want the Mets to go hog-wild.

KC
Sep 18 2006 07:03 PM

Apples and oranges - saying that someone has no self-respect makes it
sound like they wouldn't be able to look themselves in the mirror the morning
after. It's been twenty freakin' years, it's a big deal. (to me, at least)

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 18 2006 07:09 PM

Traxy's gonna romance the clincher away from the Fish:

Stay away from my window
Stay away from my back door too
Disconnect the telephone line
Relax baby and draw that blind

Kick off your shoes and sit right down
Loosen off that pretty French gown
Let me pour you a good long drink
Ooh baby don't you hesitate cause

Tonights the night
It's gonna be alright
Cause I love you girl
Ain't nobody gonna stop us now

C'mon angel my hearts on fire
Don't deny your man's desire
You'd be a fool to stop this tide
Spread your wings and let me come inside

Tonights the night
It's gonna be alright
Cause I love you girl
Ain't nobody gonna stop us now

Don't say a word my virgin child
Just let your inhibitions run wild
The secret is about to unfold
Upstairs before the night's too old, cuz:

Tonight's the night!
It's gonna be alright
Cause I love you woman
Ain't nobody gonna stop us now

The way that Bannister hit earlier in the season, combined with him being a former 2nd baseman, combined with all 3 of our 2nd baseman not being able to hit lefties; I think that I would pull a Davey Johnson and play Bannister at 2nd a few innings before the season ends...in hopes that if necessary he could help out against lefties in the playoffs if need be...

So this was by far the best game I've ever been to. I'll do a proper recap tomorrow, but hot damn was that fun! You know it's a good night when the 7 train operator starts throwing in "Lets Go Mets!" in between announcements.

Let's Go Mets! Wooooooo!!!!

Gwreck
Sep 19 2006 12:08 AM

I kind of wanted to take the train to the game (haha) but it was better driving. We caught the last of the highlight reel on Mets Extra, followed by Steve Somers' intro, which lead into a really nice highlight reel of the entire season, with all the appropriate music, New York Groove, Brass Monkey, the Daddy Yankee song Reyes and Delgado use, Sweet Child O'Mine, etc.

First Inning: Guy near us with a great sign. "Queens: A Great Place To Live, Work, and Clinch!" That was my favorite of the night, although you can't beat the classic simplicity of "Willie for President."

Between the first and second innings: On Diamonvision, my boy Duaner, shown at the top step of the dugout. Lots of cheers.

Third Inning: I think Jose Valentin knew that curtain call was coming as soon as the ball left the bat. Same thing for HR #2.

Fifth Inning: I notice something different in right field. They've moved the banners over towards the bullpen to make room. Big black empty spot between the 2000 banner and the RF flag pole.

Seventh Inning: Cops on horseback staging in RF next to the Mets 'pen.

Ninth Inning: Everbody on their feet. Loudest ovation for Enter Sandman so far this season. "Fans, just a reminder, it is dangerous and illegal to enter onto the playing field, and anyone doing so will be arrested."

As the players went to the clubhouse, Diamonvision showed the SNY feed. Lots of cheers for the interviews, particularly Wright, Omar, Jeff Wilpon/Willie Randolph.

We go to buy our shirts at the under-staffed, heavily-mobbed concession stands, and then head down to the field level as the players have come back out. Nice size crowd gathered near the Mets dugout. Players, friends, wives, kids, etc. Shawn Green's little girl is really cute.

Players spraying champagne, beer, water on the fans; Paul LoDuca gets the hose from behind the pitchers mound and gets tons of people before one of the groundskeepers runs over a turns it off.

David Wright takes the time to shake the hand of EVERY single security guard, goundskeeper, and police officer on the field.

Music playing on the PA as the on-the-field celebration continued; it finally wound down around 11:00, when we left. Security was super-accomodating, as long as you didn't want to go onto the field. Very nice touch by the Mets.

Wow...

]Delgado has the most games (1,703) among active players without a postseason appearance.

I can't imagine what he's feeling right now.

Tell us you snapped a photo of Lindsay, or at least provide a description so that Wifey Watch can have a police sketch.

Great report! Wish I coulda been there.

I was glad that MLB Extra Innings didn't cut off the feed right after the game ended. They seem to keep the lights on until the first commercial break after the game ends. I think if Gary had said, "We'll be right back" a few minutes after the game ended, that would have been it. But SNY didn't break for a commerical until about a half hour after the game ended, so I got to watch all the fun.

I have it on TiVo, and I plan to burn it to a DVD. It will be fun to watch ten or more years from now. Hopefully I'll be looking back at the beginning of a great run, and marveling at how young Reyes and Wright looked.

Ditto here. Starting to realize how bad 20 year old VHSs can be

Thanks. And yes, I believe I have a picture (taken by the g.f.). Will find it after tonight's game.

Ninth Inning: Everbody on their feet. Loudest ovation for Enter Sandman so far this season. "Fans, just a reminder, it is dangerous and illegal to enter onto the playing field, and anyone doing so will be arrested."

Remember the guy that ran onto the field a few years ago?,I think he got some rather heavy jail time,I forget the circumstances of what happened.

MLB.TV carried the feed too. I have SNY on my satellite system, but the games are blacked out because I don't have the Extra Innings package. Normally I watch the pregame on the TV, the game on the computer, then back to the TV for postgame.

Overall, I have completely enjoyed my first season with MLB.TV.

Keep him warming up in the bullpen.
Ok, let him sit down for a week or two. We don't want him to get a heart attack.
