Wasn't he getting some work in last night in the bullpen? He was wearing #49, IIRC.

It's not unheard of to call up a top prospect just to let him absorb the big league atmosphere. Darryl Strawberry was with the team in September 1982 without getting into any games. He may not have been even on the roster. But he was in the dugout wearing 18.

Willie said when he got called up that he didn't expect him to get a start...the call up was a kinda reward for all the hard work coming back form injury.
