Watcherd this one with my father in law the Eagles fan. I'd have preferred to see the Mets but maybe not. The Eagles should have scored 40 of 50 in the first half.

Not for nothing but the drive to tie it had so much garbage not associated with the actual playing of football -- a lengthy review, a dumb away from the play penalty, advantage taken of the silly rule that you can stop the clock by purposefully throwing the football on the ground (if that's the case, why even snap it?) that nearly all the drama was stripped from it.

I wish they'd just play football to decide these games.

I saw almost nothing fo this except for the tail-end of the game.

- The "spike" rule isn't so bad. It used to be every year they'd try to tweak the intentional grounding rule and they'd never get it right. At least allowing them to spike it to stop the clock gets away from the, 'whoops I threw it out of bounds' travesties that used to go on all the time while the refs would decide whether it was "intentional" or not..

- But that replay call was ridiculous.
First of all he was out of bounds and the clock should have stopped.
But even then, they decide a play after the play in question to review it (supposedly not allowed), go WAY over the amount of time alloted, then don't overturn the play which causes them to pretend that the play after it didn't occur but then don't reset the game clock which implies it DID occur.

And that'll always be the problem with replay rules; you can say that it'll only be used in certain cases and with strict time limits and all sorts of other restrictions, but trying to stick with those guidelines is like trying to stay only somewhat pregnant.

Why not just let the center call timeout? As soon as the ball is spotted, the center can grab it, ask for a timeout that the team doesn't have, and get penallized a down. It beats a game of "See How Fast We Can Lineup for a Farcical Play."

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 17 2006 10:57 PM

Why not freakin try for the score you have to get in the time you have left? Maybe the clock should run continuously, as in soccer.

Frayed Knot
Sep 17 2006 10:57 PM

I assume that a called time-out when you don't have any wouldn't stop the clock. The refs w/should just ignore him.

Edgy DC
Sep 17 2006 10:59 PM

Sure, I know the rules.

But change the rule to allow them to exchange a down for a timeout, which is essentially what a spike does, and it spares everybody a stupid farcical play.

Frayed Knot
Sep 17 2006 11:09 PM

There are too many timeouts as it is.
That game was over 3-1/2 hours before it got to overtime.

Edgy DC
Sep 17 2006 11:19 PM

You're missing the point. A spike is an effective time-out. Such a rule would not add clock stoppages. It would subtract farcical plays.

TheOldMole
Sep 18 2006 01:45 AM

Here's another thought. Football ain't baseball, but it's still a good game pretty much the way it is. Trying to cheat the clock at the end of it is one of the ways it's interesting. And you can do a fake spike, like Dan Marino.

Edgy DC
Sep 18 2006 08:59 AM

Well, it's just a suggestion. It's not like the intentional walk isn't a farcical play, that could be more easily accomplished by the catcher telling the ump, "We're going to send this guy to first."

Frayed Knot
Sep 18 2006 09:09 AM

I don't view the spike OR the IW as farcical plays, precisely because other things can happen during them.
Allowing timeouts to stop the clock even after the team is out of timeouts however ...

Edgy DC
Sep 18 2006 09:19 AM

...accomplishes what a spike accomplishes.

Interesting game today. They would've won Seattle last year if Feely could've made a kick.

Sep 24 2006 04:57 PM

The Seahawks are having their way with the Giants. They lead by a score of 21-0 with 4 minutes still left in the 1st quarter. The only good is that it's early, so there is time for a possible comeback. Of course, the flip side is that there is plenty of time for further ass kickin' and humiliation at the hands of the Seahawks.

Questions have to be asked here about the coaching and why the Giants are starting games so slowly.

Frayed Knot
Sep 24 2006 09:24 PM

And why a team with a "disciplinarian" coach takes so many stupid penalties.

Because he's just a football coach. Last time I looked, nobody has ever performed a brain transplant.

Maybe there's something to be said for the Pats/ Jets philosophy of drafting based on mental as well as physical skills.

Frayed Knot

Yeah, but you know that if a "law and order" type coach were brought in and penalties went dramatically [u:403e3aff2c]down[/u:403e3aff2c] that the cause-and-effect link would be immediately credited.

But now, between the increasinly long-term penalty problems on this team plus stuff like Shockey and/or Buress's constant yapping and habit of blowing off off-season team workouts, at some point someone's got to question whether this emperor has any clothes and whether the 'drill-sargeant' mentality is really all it's cracked up to be.

Giants 6-3 at the half ... pretty boring game. I'd much rather be watching
Cards/Pads which was supposed to be on at 1:00 but FOX greed prevails.

I wish someone would buy Tony a six foot combo sub and give him something
to do that doesn't require speaking.

If I here about T O's return one more fucking time this week, I may go out-
side and start shooting at stuff. Where did I put those shells?

Wasn't the baseball game on ESPN?

KC

It was supposed to be, until it was the only game left and FOX scapped it up.

Whores. Jeannie, Kevin, Timmy ... the whole lot of 'em. T O returning to Philly
just wasn't enough.
