I sense there's a bit of a movement among NYC-area sports fans to sort of "adopt" Rutgers as the local college football team to get behind - particularly if this good start of theirs starts to look like more than just an illusion. Much of that will obviously come from NJ residents and RU alum/family. But, even beyond just them, because there's been such a scarcity of schools this side of central PA or north of Maryland that have been remotely successful on a national level, I think there's a segment of northeast fans who are anxious to have a good team they can call "their own".
And nothing promotes band-wagon jumping like a winning team.

A huge game for the new look Big East Conference with National Championship ramifications to be played this Thursday when #3 West Virginia travels to #5 Louisville for a matchup of unbeatens. Last years contest was an offensive shoot out which West Virginia won 46-44 on the third series of overtime possessions.

soupcan
Oct 30 2006 11:45 AM

The Orange have won 3 games this year. Last year they only won 1. That's a pretty decent improvement so far.

They have USF (5-3), UConn (3-5) & Freakin' Rutgers (8-0) left. They could absolutely beat UConn and maybe even USF.

Best case they go 5-7. Even if they go 4-8 it's not good but a helluva improvement over 1-11.

But, yeah - they do suck.

My take on Rutgers by the way - Congratulations, blah, blah, blah. This great season for them seems to have come at the cost of dividing their campus between the academics and the alum. While departments have suffered cutbacks and programs and classes are no longer being offered because of financial shortfalls, the athletic department is enjoying new, state of the art facilities. Yes the result on the field is apparent and camouflaging all the ill will very nicely, but anyone who even remotely follows college football knows that its an ebb & flow sport and maintaining success is even more difficult than first attaining it.

With rumors flying that Schiano is being targeted by Miami, its going to be quite a challenge for RU to continue justifying the academic sell-out if the football team follows up this dream season with a 6-6 and a 4-8.

All that being said - The resurgence of Rutgers as a college football power this year is a testament to the job Schiano has done. I only hope that the Syracuse coach (Robinson, right?) gets the same results in the next several years.

Strength of schedule plays a LARGE part in the BCS and Rutgers has wins over Howard (2-5), North Carloina (1-7), Illinois (2-7), Ohio University (a winning record but keep in mind that they hail from the not so powerful Mid-American conference).

Their only 'quality win' so far came against Pittsburgh. Now I'm not saying that Rutgers is a paper tiger, they could still beat Louisville and West Virgina - 2 of the top teams in the country - and finish 12-0 and ranked in the top ten.

If Michigan or Ohio State lose a game and one or both of those teams ends up playing for a national chamionship instead of a possibly undefeated RU team, the uproar from New Brunswick might be loud but it wouldn't be justified.

UM has beaten Vanderbilt (4-4, SEC), Notre Dame (7-1 and ranked #7), Wisconsin (8-1 and ranked #17), Penn State (6-3), Iowa (6-3).

Ohio State has beaten Texas (8-1, ranked #4) and many of the same teams as Michigan.

I know that you can only beat who you play but clearly Michigan & OSU have had a much more difficult road here and if one of them loses to the other and finishes the season with one loss, Rutgers still cannot cry foul if it doesn't get a title shot over one of these guys.

MFS62
Oct 30 2006 08:50 PM

My comment was based on Rutgers "running the table". And that would mean they beat two teams in the top 8 (W.Va and Louisville).

I don't think there's any question that if that happened, Rutgers should get a bowl bid (maybe they've already earned that). But not the championship game. No offense, Scarlet

Frayed Knot
Oct 30 2006 11:45 PM

Rutgers could win all their remaining games by 4 touchdowns each and they wouldn't be playing in any championship game, and it's only partially because they wouldn't deserve it on account of their sked
The system is also somewhat rigged against them:
- Schools w/big football reputations get preference and RU ain't got a big football rep
- and where you start the season has an effect on things. A team starting out of the top 25 can go undefeated and they'll never catch the team that starts in the top 10 who also goes undefeated.

btw, Selena Roberts had a piece in Sunday's NYTimes about Congress turning it's gaze towards the sewer that is big time college football.
Seems that some pols are threatening to question these folks about why contributions to NCAA should remain tax-exempt when the money is being used to pay coaches who have no other academic function, and also to fund increasingly extravagent perks.

This could get fun.

Well, since Halloween is all about costumes -

About 20 years ago, during halftime of a USC- Stamford game, the Stamford band took the field. They had the reputation for funny and innovative presentations. It was when the network (ABC) used to show the bands at halftime. So with the cameras rolling, the Stamford band and cheerleaders took the field.
The cheerleaders all wore costumes that made them look pregnant, and they carried signs that said;
"Trojans are no good".

ABC cut to a commercial.

The Cardinals will likely roll into Rutgers as the #3 ranked team in the land after having defeated West Virginia this evening.

It was a game that displayed impressive offensive firepower from both teams. The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards of offense. Both teams seemed capable of maving the ball down the field at will. West Virginia still has a very good team, but their own mistakes led to their undoing tonight against a very good Louisville squad. Ultimately, Lousville won because of a few big plays from their defensive unit and special teams. The Cardinals (I'm really learning to hate that team name) defense returned a WVU fumble for a touchdown and later they were able to return a punt for a touchdown.

Well, I was partly joking when I wrote that, but now... who knows?

But, one thing that came up today.
They announced that Rutgers had never beat a team ranked as high as #3 before in their history.
A minor quibble here.
Didn't they also say that Rutgers beat Princeton in the first collegiate football game in history (1869)? Well, if they were the only two teams, one of them had to be #1 and one of them #2.

Of course, the NCAA then refused to award Rutgers the 1869 national title because of "strength of schedule".

I don't by the "until you beat a good team you aren't good" argument. How can you know?
Also, I don't think they've had a "lofty" ranking. A BCS ranking of 13 for an undefeated BCS conference school is pretty low.
And as far as beating good teams, let's look at the Big Ten. Personally, I think other than OSU and Michigan, the rest of the conference this year is pretty average. I think OSU and Michigan each have one really "good" win, and both were nonconference. You could argue they were great wins, but I don't believe they've been tested week in, week out.
If Rutgers does go undefeated, they will have beaten two top ten teams along the way, because they would have gotten past WVU.

And it's not just Rutgers. How about Boise State? One of the teams I've heard mentioned as a possible one-loss team that could play in the championship game is USC if they run the table the rest of the way. But who beat USC? Oregon State. The same Oregon State team that was run off the field 42-14 by Boise State earlier in the year. How would the BCS explain USC playing for a national championship ahead of an unbeaten Boise St?

We need a playoff, and fast.

Nymr83
Nov 10 2006 12:28 PM

certainly playoffs would be better, but as it stands strength of schedule needs to matter as much or more than records, because the disparity in college teams makes the Colts and Texans look like equals

Willets Point
Nov 10 2006 08:53 PM

Seeing that college basketball players can handle playing 30+ games before their conference and national tournaments, I would think that football players who play only a dozen games can handle the rigors of an additional 1-4 playoff games (especially since they only play once per week).

Nymr83
Nov 10 2006 08:58 PM

well its really a matter of the length of the season, i'm not sure how those compare

Willets Point
Nov 10 2006 09:03 PM

Basketball = 4 months (Nov-Feb) + Mar/early April if they're good

Last year, West Virginia built an early lead and then held on to defeat Georgia of the SEC in the Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately, Rutgers fell to Arizona State of the Pac 10 by a field goal and Virginia Tech beat Louisville pretty handily in the other bowl games by Big East teams.

The Big East is definitely a premiere basketball conference, but they just can't seem to get much respect as a football conference. Hopefully, the Big East can go 3-0 in Bowl games this year.

Good for Boise.

Unfortunately, most of the small to mid sized conferences will do just about
anything the folks at the four-letter network want.
Since the major networks have the major conferences & Notre Dame tied up
the others - particularly the MAAC & Big East (for football anyway) - depend
on ESPN as their major source of both money and exposure. They even get
double exposure out of it really since ESPN then shows the hell out of the game
during their highlights since they already own the film.
As a result, the traditional Sat afternoon football game is out the window for
many schools as there are now games on viirtually every night of the week. Only
Mondays are left NCAA fridiron free so as to not conflict with ... ESPN's Monday Night
Football of course!!

We had a Christmas party at our house last night. Had 12 other couples here, some of us watched the WVU/Rutgers game until halftime. WVU's offense looked like crap without their quaterback, Pat White, able to play. Since West Virginia's defense is pretty porous this season, they generally win games by piling up points and outscoring opponents in offensive slug fests. With Jarret Brown making the first start of his career, I felt West Virginia had no chance against Rutgers defense and I switched the TV off in disgust at halftime. It wasn't until I got up this morning and checked the ESPN scoreboard did I know what a great game I had missed.

Congratulations to Rutgers for a fine season thus far. Hopefully, Louisville, Rutgers, and West Virginia can win their respective bowl games and finally gain some respect for the much maligned football of the Big East conference. I just hope that Pat White is well enough to return to quaterback West Virginia in their bowl game.

I agree that Ohio State and Michigan seem to be the best teams in the country. I would love to see Florida and Michigan face off with the winner taking on Ohio State. Oh well, that's the nature of Div. I college football. I expect that Florida will likely face Ohio State for the national title.

Frayed Knot
Dec 08 2006 10:58 AM

And, unlike the NFL games on their own network, they're NOT required to farm it out to a local station in the local markets of the teams involved.
But the thing is, if they don't, the ratings for the game will be in fractions of a share that they'll have to go several decimal places just to find.

Nymr83
Dec 08 2006 11:07 AM

thats pretty disgraceful that people in NJ won't even be able to watch.

Frayed Knot
Dec 08 2006 11:40 AM

Well I don't think it's set yet that they won't.

Like I said, the ratings will be virtually non-existant if this game isn't available to at least a decent portion of fans in the two markets involved and, figuring that, just because the network isn't contractually obligated to farm it out to a station in the local markets doesn't mean they won't come to their senses and do just that. More than 1/3 of the country doesn't even have access to the NFL network including large portions of the NY/NJ area.

On the one hand they want to build this new network that they've created and hording exclusive pregramming is one way of tantalizing carriers into adding it to their lineups. On the other, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot if they get too uppity about it and they'll risk turning themselves into the joke about the country club that's so exclusive it has no actual members.

I was glad to see Boise State pull it out. How could you not pull for a team that decides to forgo kicking the extra point in overtime and go for the 2-point conversion. Then on that decisive play, opts to go for the "Statue of Liberty" play, seldom seen outside of the sandlots of youth. It was a fitting end to a great game.

Anytime a team from a non-glamour conference can knock off one of the long-time "name" schools from a lauded conference (and shut up their apologists in the media) it's fine with me. That they did it while using option passes, hook-n-lateral plays, and finally the freakin Statue of Liberty play on an overtime 2-pt miss-it-and-you're-dead conversion play is even better.

Of course it would have been better if it had been in something other than the silly made-up Fiesta Bowl while ending at one in the morning.

And, if that ending had to be any better to qualify for a movie script, consider this:
The kid who scored the winning OT 2 point conversion on that Statue of Liberty play kept running out of the end zone, up to the Boise State cheerleader squad, knelt down in front of his girl friend (one of the cheerleaders) and asked her to marry him.

Here's a problem I have with College football -- tonight's game started around 8:00 (I don't know when it exactly started because I wasn't watching but it was sked for 8 and the pre-game nonsense began at 7:30). Anyway, I was just flipping channels and went past the game ... it's quarter-to-eleven and they're [u:96ee3396a0]just starting[/u:96ee3396a0] the 2nd half.

I know that part of it is unique to these bowl games which they stuff with all sorts of TV timeouts, extended commercials, and extra-lengthy half-time shows -- but even for reg season college games they're now blocking out 3-1/2 hours of TV time and they frequently go over that. The interuptions and the lack of flow in these games is even worse than for NFL games and I didn't think that was possible.
