On the pregame show, Willie spoke of "rewarding" his regulars.

I wonder about keeping Reyes out to preserve that .300 average. I suspect that could be a consideration.

They're giving Frank Robinson a lovely and appropriate send-off.

Cliff Floyd --- gimpiest of leadoff batters.

G-Fafif
Oct 01 2006 01:28 PM

There is no doubt a metric that supports Cliff Floyd as an ideal leadoff hitter, particularly over that undisciplined Jose Reyes.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:35 PM

It always makes me grin to see Oliver Perez leap over the foul line that way <g>

0-0 after one inning.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:41 PM

The old man drives in young Mr. Wright. 1-0 Mets in the second.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:41 PM

Porn Stash follows that up with a single that drives in Mr. Green. 2-0.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:43 PM

Anderson Hernandez's first major league triple brings in Franco and Valentin. 4-0 Mets.

Oliver Perez's ground out is the first out in the second inning.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:45 PM

Ryan Church's misplay gives Floyd a RBI double (otherwise it would have been a sac fly) that drives in Hernandez. 5-0 Mets, but Cliff is really hobbling.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:47 PM

Cliff hobbles home on LoDuca's single. 6-0.

Ramon Martinez is out of the game - Billy Traber comes in.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:52 PM

The hit parade continues against Traber - Wright gets his second single of the inning.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:54 PM

Mr. Green's bloop single loads the bases.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 01:56 PM

Franco strikes out to end the inning. 6-0 Mets going to the bottom of the second.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 02:02 PM

Meanwhile, Oliver Perez has notched his second consecutive 1-2-3 inning.

For a second there I thought that really was Pedro's brother you were talking about and I was "HE'S still around?"

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 02:26 PM

Perez struggles in the 3rd, but ultimately gets out of the inning unscathed. Still 6-0 Mets.

ScarletKnight41

Cliff and Beltran just miss colliding over an outfield ball. Beltran makes the catch. Floyd looks really hobbled out there. If we make it to the World Series, Cliff has to DH.

Floyd and Beltran just about avoid a collision on a Beltran catch.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 02:40 PM

They follow that up by letting a ball fall between them with two out.

Gary was saying something about Wright having done something that only Mel Ott and Joe DiMaggio had done previously.

I think it was consecutive seasons of .300 and 100 RBIs before age 24.

Anyone catch that?

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 02:42 PM

Ryan Church's ball falls in front of Cliff to put Washington on the board. 6-1 in the 4th.

I hate my memory but I thought it was 25 homers and 100 + RBI before age 24/25 in consecutive seasons.

Perez extricates himself from another bases loaded jam, and it's 6-1 after four innings.

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 02:52 PM

Wonder if this will earn Perez a DS roster slot and perhaps a Game 4 start?

Gwreck
Oct 01 2006 02:54 PM

Only if there was an injury or Trachsel can't go.

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 02:58 PM

I'd rather hold El Duque back for a week from Monday at Shea rather than bring him back in Game 4 though

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 03:04 PM

With the help of a nice play from Beltran that doubled up a runner, Bert Hernandez pitches a scoreless 5th inning.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 03:20 PM

Feliciano pitches a 1-2-3 6th inning.

Fine, but that still wouldn't get Perez a start. John Maine would start game 4 in that scenario.

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 03:23 PM

Good point. Okay, maybe just a roster spot =;)

In Pedro's spot in the roster

Steve, here's the postseason roster. Unless you're advocating that they take 12 pitchers and only 13 position players, who would you leave off?

Hernandez
Glavine
Trachsel
Maine

Wagner
Heilman
Mota
Bradford
Feliciano
Hernandez
Oliver

LoDuca
Castro
DiFelice

Delgado
Valentin
Wright
Reyes
Franco
Woodward

Floyd
Beltran
Green
Chavez
Tucker

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 03:30 PM

Okay fine, never mind...

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 03:46 PM

Bradford gives up 1 hit in his scoreless 7th inning.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 03:50 PM

No need to flip to the Jets game - the SNY booth is practically providing play-by-play updates.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 03:55 PM

Miledge hustles and makes a very nice diving catch in left.

Mota is pitching. The booth is debating whether Heilman or Wagner will get the tune up inning in the 9th.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 03:59 PM

Mota finishes a 1-2-3 8th inning.

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 04:00 PM

I'd give it to Aaron, just for being a good sport about being in the pen all year, especially during the Lima-Gonzalez fiascos

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 04:08 PM

More importantly, Aaron needs the work.

And, in fact, he will pitch the 9th.

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 04:09 PM

And that just about wraps its up on the regular season offensive side. Three more outs to go

Yup. Sandman will wait till Wednesday to Enter.

ScarletKnight41

Heilman gives up one run in the 9th. 6-2 is your final.

Cheap Washington organization had to steal the Blue Jays old bullpen chairs.

SteveJRogers
Oct 01 2006 04:21 PM

And THAT my friends is your 2006 Regular Season

97 up, 65 down. NL East Champs, Best record in the NL, tied with some other NY team for best record in the whole darn MLB!

PUT THAT IN YOUR BOOKS!

Nice to head into post season with a four game winning streak. I can't wait for Wed!

Apparently Mota gets credit for the win, the official scorer exercising his discretion to give it to the reliever who was most effective. But it seems kind of a raw deal for Hernandez.

Gwreck
Oct 01 2006 04:35 PM

Seems like a raw deal for Perez, I think.

He wasn't lifted for being ineffective. I think given his 4 innings, he should get the discretionary win.

dinosaur jesus
Oct 01 2006 04:47 PM

It is tough for Perez, but the scorer had no choice there. He had to give the win to one of the relievers. I checked: It's rule 10.19(a) and (c)(1).

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 01 2006 04:52 PM

It would have been nice of Willie to give Perez the 5th inning. He pitches well so infrequently he would have been happy to get the W.

metirish
Oct 01 2006 04:53 PM

Yeah that would have been nice but it looks like Willie and Rick wanted to get the pen some work.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 01 2006 05:14 PM

I agree with Irish. Tuning up for Wednesday is more important than Oliver Perez's W-L record.

MFS62
Oct 01 2006 05:35 PM

It also would have been nice to allow Beltran to come up another time with a couple of some all time team records within reach.
