Speaking of Transaction Terminology

A while ago, in one of the roster threads, there was a discussion about some of the terminology used to describe a transaction. I think it was about the difference between a balllplayer being "assigned" versus "Optioned". Earlier this week I saw this in the transactions section of my local paper: "The Seattle Mariners selected RHP Jorge Campillo from Triple-A Tacoma and placed RHP Cha Seung Baek on the 60-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right triceps." I've never seen that term (selected) used before other than in regards to the draft. Usually the transaction wire/ mlb.com will say something like "Purchased the contract of..... " when a team adds a minor leaguer to the 40 man roster. Anyone else notice this? read any details about it? Why do you think it was worded this way? I won't be able to schedule that seminar someone suggested if I can't find out. Later

] it was about the difference between a balllplayer being "assinged" versus "Optioned". i think a ballplay that has been "assinged" has had his ass set on fire.

Call the Mariners and ask them. I doubt that they'll be able to answer your question, but why not try?

I sent an email to a friend (a big Mariners fan) in Seattle to ask if it was explained in the papers out there. I'll post any info learned. If that fails, I may call them. Later

Here's some feedback I got. Seems to make some sense. ]It could have to do with the Triple-A season being over and Jorge doesn't have an active '06 contract (nothing to purchase). Later
