Thanks Willets,I have a good feeling about this,Maine to become a Mets legend, that's a leftie heavy Mets lineup.

Thank you Irish for making a light bulb go off in my head:

That's a hefty lefty lineup. (Or lefty hefty.)

A sinker, not really a splitter, although the effect is often the same.
He got the largest pct of ground balls of any pitcher this season.
Sinker-ballers get the ball "up" when tired and/or ineffective and that's when they get hammered.

Willets-

Martin hit a double off the right field wall. Green threw a strike to Valentin who threw a strike to Lo Duca who tagged out Kent diving into home. JD Drew didn't stop at third, though, and was right on Ken't tail. Don't know why he didn't slow down with the play developing in front of him, but he kept running. Maine shouted at Lo Duca that another runner was coming home and Lo Duca put down a second tag to get the also diving Drew out at home. It was unreal.

That inning could've been a hell of a lot worse. Maine at 42 pitches now at the end of 2.

Payton hit a three-run homer off of Mariano Freakin Rivera in the ninth inning of Game Three in 2000.

They gave him a two-run pad, and he pitched within it. Game.

Crowd was as loud as I've heard it in quite some time, especially during the first inning. Never got quite that loud again but they were pretty good. Unfortunate Yankees suck chant here and there (like after they ran that commercial on the Diamondvision where Tommy Lasorda tells us that October is the time to root against the yankees).

Pedro was in the dugout, shown on the screen between innings. Cheers. He tries to duck away, but Ray Ramirez convinces him to come back up, he waves to the crowd (doing that Pedro "point" thing he does).

Floyd got a curtain call of sorts, he was shown inside a big heart during the "Kiss Cam" between innings on the Diamonvision. He's put up, lots of cheering, he turns to see what's on the scoreboard and realizes that it's him. Tips the cap.

I don't think I've ever seen Delgado show so much emotion on the field. I don't think he could've high-fived David Wright any harder after that bomb of a homer. Huge fist pump after the single in the 7th.

To answer a question from earlier, yes, they did player introductions, but before the TV coverage started. El Duque limped out there for them, but then they didn't introduce him...and after finishing the rest of the players introduced him (the announcer seemed to be reading from the roster sheet directly).

Serves Fox right for getting the rain delay after putting the MFYs in primetime again.

Rotblatt
Oct 04 2006 10:05 PM

Amazing game. Maine did a great job, and Delgado and Wright made me ever-so-happy.

Mota looked sharp in the sixth, but I really wanted us to go to Heilman midway through the 7th. Still, it's hard to blame that awesome bunt by Anderson or Valentin's error on Mota . . .

The crowd was amazing. I didn't think they could get any more intense than they were at the clincher, but they managed it.

Billy nearly gave me a heart attack. Seriously, dude, stop fucking around.

I can't wait to see the replay of the double play at the plate. That shit was incredible. I've never seen anything remotely like it. Green had a suck-ass game, but that one throw mitigates at least half of his at bats.

Anyway, I'm totally exhausted now. And happy. What a game!

Let's Go Mets!

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 04 2006 10:06 PM

What an extraordinary 2006 Met game.

It went almost exactly as you knew the Mets would have to win: Their guns came through with just enough offense (despite leaving a few too many guys on 3rd), they were rewarded for making the plays and punished for not making them, WWSB strapped them on BIG-TIME going to situational guys in the 5th! -- brilliant! Ballsy! -- getting more than half the game from a tag-teaming bullpen.

I don'tt recommend playing that way as a means to win every game, but to win one game -- today's game -- it was the way to go.

Lundy
Oct 04 2006 10:29 PM

It was absolutely intense at the game. The fans were keyed up for every pitch of the game. We were standing and rhythymically clapping for strikeouts in the FIRST inning, for crissakes.

I was sitting in the mezz in the rightfield corner, kinda near the back of the section, so we couldn't see Shawn Green miss the ball, but we could tell from the crowd reaction that he didn't catch the ball. I'm guessing the baserunners were also focused on Green and whether or not he caught the ball. It certainly was the oddest double play I've ever seen. Kinda angry that they didn't replay it on Diamondvision (or if they did, we missed it.)

Just to illustrate how busy and intense the game was. While walking to Penn Station, I noticed that my shoelace was untied. I was running late for the train, so I said, screw it, I'll tie it on the train. Train was too crowded--had to stand. Boardwalk over to Shea was packed as well. Waiting to pass through Gate E packed as well. Got to my seat right at first pitch and never thought about my shoelace. It was finally tied--right after I got off the train at Little Neck after the game.

Gwreck
Oct 04 2006 10:32 PM

Where did Delgado's homer land, anyway?

I watched the replay on ESPN and on Mets.com and I can't see it. I missed it at the game because, well, we were going nuts.

It was announced as 470 feet...did it clear the batter's eye? I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that.

This was more of a pregame thread thing, but I was in the ladies room before the game, when I overheard someone on her cell phone saying, "I'm stuck here in Manhattan in a management training seminar. I'll be here until at least 6:30."

I wonder whether the person on the other end of the conversation heard me lauging at that.
