Pics for the UMDB

Valadius
Oct 12 2006 02:47 PM

After seeing that Cory Lidle didn't have a pic up on UMDB, I decided to go look for Metly photos of other Mets without them.

Kane Davis

Tyler Walker (there's a better pic out there, but it's on a baseball card. Are baseball card pics ok? I doubt it, but it would be nice to know)

Esix Snead

Mike DeJean

Jorge Velandia

Jason Anderson

Rick White

Brett Hinchliffe

We have a "UMDB Most Wanted" thread around here somewhere... and I know Yancy would rather have no image at all that a black hat image. He's old skool.

Edgy DC
Oct 12 2006 02:50 PM

The general rule is that Yancy has a fear of a black hat.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 12 2006 03:06 PM

More a loathing than a fear.

I don't mind baseball card pictures. They just need to be larger than that Tyler Walker image you posted. The face has to pretty much fill up an area of 58 by 80 pixels. I also try to avoid those blank stare/grey background pictures.

(I feel like I'm typing this criteria for the fifteenth time. I guess it's easier than finding it in previous posts.)

If anyone wants to go on an Internet scavenger hunt, your assignment for today is to find a better Kenny Rogers picture than the one currently on his page. It has the black cap and the grey background.

A full face blue cap action photo with the head at least 58 pixels x 80 would be ideal. But even falling short of that ideal, there have got to be better pictures around. The current one fails on every criteria except size.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 12 2006 03:07 PM

That Rick White would be very good, by the way, if it were larger.

seawolf17
Oct 12 2006 03:10 PM

You should put the criteria somewhere on the site.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 12 2006 03:14 PM

Nah. I appreciate that people want to help find pictures, but it doesn't really trouble me that I don't have everyone. Encouraging submissions would mean dealing with a lot of e-mails with attachments, many of which would be useless.

seawolf17
Oct 12 2006 03:16 PM

You should encourage people to post their picture contributions in a thread here in the Pool. Aha! A Pool member recruitment tool!

Yancy Street Gang

I might cherrypick a few, but none of them really send me.

The Humber one is ineligible because it's not a real Mets cap, it's just that spring training/practice cap. That's even less acceptable than the all-black one.

Oct 16 2006 01:53 PM

Are blue caps preferable to blue batting helmets or are the helmets just as good?

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 16 2006 01:59 PM

If I had a cap photo and a helmet photo, both of equal quality, I'd choose the cap. But I've used plenty of helmet photos, and I'm not looking to replace them.

soupcan
Oct 16 2006 02:04 PM

But blue helmets are better than black caps, right?

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 16 2006 02:07 PM

Most definitely.

If blue caps are 100% desirable, blue helmets are 99%. I make virtually no distinction. (I tried explaining that above but I guess I didn't do a good job of it.)

The all-black caps and helmets are a last resort. The blue-brimmed caps occupy the middle ground.

I'm not sure where I stand on the blue and black helmets. I think they only appear once, for Xavier Nady.

Meanwhile, in other UMDB news, David Wright has finally cracked the all-time Top Twenty for hit counts. In the last day or so he knocked Bobby Valentine out of the Top Twenty and also passed Willie Mays, so he's now in 19th place.

Edgy DC
Oct 16 2006 02:13 PM

He was also number one yesterday, relegating poor Cory Lidle to UMDB history.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 16 2006 02:15 PM

I noticed that, too. Lidle's reign only lasted three days. (Mookie Wilson won the fourth day after the plane crash.)

I think Jeff Reardon got a full week out of his jewelry store robbery.

Edgy DC
Oct 16 2006 02:16 PM

All Mookie had to do was appear in the seats at Busch.

Yes, he is somewhat underappreciated. But it's also become a rather steep climb for newcomers. Right now, to get "into the pack" you have to rise to about 760th place. Now that Delgado's there, he should start passing some people. (The lowest ranked Met who has been in the database since it began is Dennis Musgraves in 760th place. It looks like Delgado passed him about a week ago.)

Valadius
Oct 16 2006 03:54 PM

Then just let it go. No need to find something just so Yance can remove the Mr. Met pic from a Met sans his picture in UMDB.

Sure there are some in there, but for the most part, make sure things fit the criteria.

And see if they've been posted before, I know I've tried posting that Henry Owens pic before and Yancy didn't take it.

Chances are, Yancy has seen most of the images on the net, hell he never did find a blue caped Xavier Nady that was a good clean full shot of him

MFS62
Oct 23 2006 01:11 PM

I'm still not sure without seeing his birth certificate. It is very common on Spanish speaking countries to use the mother's maiden name as part of the person's second-to-last name.

Unlike where women today use a hyphen when they add their married name to their maiden name, the Latinos do not hyphenate them. Someone unfamilliar with that custom could easily mistake the mother's name as a middle name. So, William may be his true middle name.

Later

Valadius
Oct 23 2006 01:17 PM

Actually, MFS, as I understand it, it's the opposite. The mother's maiden name is actually tacked on at the end in Spanish-speaking countries.

From Wikipedia article on "Family name":

However, nowadays in Spain and in many countries of Hispanic culture (former Spanish colonies, e.g. Mexico, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Venezuela), most people have two surnames, although in some situations only the first is used. The first surname is the paternal one, inherited from the father's paternal surname. The second surname is the maternal one, inherited from the mother's paternal surname. (As an example, Mexican boxer Marco Antonio Barrera's full name is Marco Antonio Barrera Tapia, though Barrera is the only one used in general conversation.)

Personal UMDB memory: first time I saw it was a random google looking for Met stuff. The first thing that caught my eye was the pictorial starting lineup that the box score were accompanied by.

A couple years later I was looking for that site again to show my buddy "I saw this really cool site that had the starting lineup in pictures but I can't remember where the heck it is."

Maybe even prior to that by a bit, but used it alot while researching for that 25th anniversary Met card set in 2002. Probly already had it bookmarked by then.
Thats when I ran into all these sites-UMDB, Cranpool Forum(must hv been the old one-looked different), Mr Whithams great photos, and Mets By The Numbers (<a surprisingly great source for many Met pics)

If someone scanned in a team picture, could you use software to cut out and enlarge an individual player for the UMDB?
Seems to me some of those guys shold be in at least one of the team pictures.

Enlarging usually results in too great a loss of clarity.

I have been able to get some of the pictures by scanning team photos from yearbooks, though.

I think most of the missing guys are midseason aquisitions who weren't around for the team photo as printed in the yearbook.

Term Expires November 2009

On November 5, 2005 Pam Frisella took office and will serve a four year term on the City Council. Pam is currently serving as Vice Mayor.

Pam has been a resident of Foster City for 28 years. She moved here with newborn Daniel and her three year old son Jason in 1977.

Pam coached Little League for 8 years and was on the AYSO Board of Directors for 5 years. She lobbied as the Chairperson of the Citizen's Committee for Development and Construction of Sea Cloud Park. She was also the Chairperson for the Committee to reconstruct Serra High School Baseball Field and named it Danny Frisella Memorial Field. She has most recently been on the Parks and Recreation Committee. In October 2005 Pam was inducted to the Sports Wall of Fame at Sea Cloud Park.

Pam has been a volunteer for Samaritan House for almost 20 years and in that time has served on their Board of Directors and most recently their Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator. She has been named Volunteer of the year in 1995 for her work at Samaritan House and 1999 named Volunteer of the Year for her work at the Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter. Most recently she does prison ministry at San Quentin Prison.

Pam has been an Ambassador for the Foster City Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the Rotary Club of Foster City for five years. She currently serves on the Board of Directors as the International Chairperson for the club.

Pam was born and raised in 1946 in Detroit, Michigan. After attending Western Michigan University for two years she worked for General Motors before moving to New York City for a career change. Pam then moved to California in 1969. While married she moved to several different cities before finally coming to Foster City after being widowed in 1977.

After graduating from the Leadership program in 1998 sponsored by several Bay Area Cities, Pam realized that community service was ingrained in her soul and began to think about a role in city government. The last decade her service was directed more county wide and now her commitment will be directly to the City she loves.....Foster City.

That relief appearance in April of 1969 is a strange one.

From Retrosheet:

CUBS 9TH: Kessinger walked; Beckert grounded out (first
unassisted) [Kessinger to second]; Williams reached on an error
by Boswell [Kessinger to third]; Santo reached on an error by
Collins [Kessinger scored (unearned), Williams to third, Santo
out at second (first to right to second)]; Banks singled to
right [Williams scored (unearned)]; Hundley homered (unearned)
[Banks scored (unearned)]; Spangler walked; SEAVER REPLACED
KOONCE (PITCHING); Phillips walked [Spangler to second]; Regan
was called out on strikes; 4 R (0 ER), 2 H, 2 E, 2 LOB. Cubs 8,
Mets 6.

It was the first game of a doubleheader at Shea. Seaver had started and pitched 7 innings two days earlier. Strange that he came into the game after the Cubs had scored four runs in the ninth to take a two-run lead.

Both good ideas, Seawolf, and I'll put them on my to-do list. The next step will be to extend this search feature to opposing players. (I can probably do it with just a few lines of code.) It will make it easier, for example, to find all multi-home run games that Billy Williams had against the Mets.

Break the transactions down by year.

But before any of that, the Mug Shots page is broken.

The mug shots page is fixed. (I wonder how long it was broken?) Thanks for pointing it out.

I'm not sure about breaking transactions down by year. That's already been done on pages like this one:

http://www.ultimatemets.com/metannual.php?ThisYear=2006&tabno=5

I think there are some who like seeing the transactions all on one big page. (Admittedly, though, it's a very big page.) I don't think I'll be putting that one on the to-do list.

Excellent point. Sorry. I guess that's not where the drop-down needs to be.

The real drop-down menus I want, I guess, are on the Birthplaces page, and, especially, the Post-Season games page.

Plus I want a feature on each living player's page where I can e-mail them directly and invite them over for dinner and a rousing game of Boggle.

I do plan to eventually break the post-season games page down as you suggest. Maybe I'll get to that before Opening Day. I hadn't thought about it for the birthplaces page, but that's not a bad idea. I'll put that on the list, too.

That's in the works, but, unfortunately, only for the dead players. The living ones are too busy playing golf to get involved with Boggle. Sorry.

Good. I look forward to kicking Don Rowe's ghost's ass.

I'm surprised at how many games Jerry Koosman pitched in relief.

And how many games Tug McGraw started. He even pitched a shutout as late as 1974.

More new and improved stuff:

You can now do the same game searches for opposing players:

http://ultimatemets.com/opponent.php?PlayerCode=5829&tabno=1

And the Interactive Stats page has been revamped as well. (I couldn't believe how musty that page had gotten.) You can now do game searches there, too. For example, you can find every player to ever hit 3 home runs in a game, either for or against the Mets.

Check it out!

Awesome.

On the "individual games" drop-down, there should be a "0" option, at least for categories like runs allowed and hits allowed. (For example, all games with seven innings, zero hits.)

I was surprised to notice that there are still a bunch of postseason games that nobody has posted a memory for.
