Pics for the UMDB
Valadius Oct 12 2006 02:47 PM |
After seeing that Cory Lidle didn't have a pic up on UMDB, I decided to go look for Metly photos of other Mets without them.
seawolf17 Oct 12 2006 02:50 PM |
We have a "UMDB Most Wanted" thread around here somewhere... and I know Yancy would rather have no image at all that a black hat image. He's old skool.
Edgy DC Oct 12 2006 02:50 PM |
The general rule is that Yancy has a fear of a black hat.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 12 2006 03:06 PM |
More a loathing than a fear.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 12 2006 03:07 PM |
That Rick White would be very good, by the way, if it were larger.
seawolf17 Oct 12 2006 03:10 PM |
You should put the criteria somewhere on the site.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 12 2006 03:14 PM |
Nah. I appreciate that people want to help find pictures, but it doesn't really trouble me that I don't have everyone. Encouraging submissions would mean dealing with a lot of e-mails with attachments, many of which would be useless.
seawolf17 Oct 12 2006 03:16 PM |
You should encourage people to post their picture contributions in a thread here in the Pool. Aha! A Pool member recruitment tool!
Rotblatt Oct 12 2006 03:24 PM |

Done. That was easy.

Val, that looks like a Bar Mitzvah picture, with the kid wearing his favorite gift. I'm not sure if a non-full-uni shot is UMDB-worthy. I'll let the "experts" judge that.

My anaconda don't want none Unless you've got buns, hun You can do side bends or sit-ups, But please don't lose that butt

Do we go with this Mike DiFelice:
Valadius Oct 16 2006 01:14 PM |
Well the above Humber is probably better than this one:
metirish Oct 16 2006 01:15 PM |
Blue caps Val....

Valadius Oct 16 2006 01:19 PM |
Well any Mets cap is better than no Mets cap. There are no pics out there that I can find for some of these guys with blue caps.
soupcan Oct 16 2006 01:21 PM |
Well that's the challenge.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 01:22 PM |
For now, neither. I don't really like including shades. I'll probably replace the Lo Duca mug shot one of these days with one that doesn't include shades, even if I have to abandon the blue cap.
MFS62 Oct 16 2006 01:31 PM |
Yancy, why do you have this "thing" against blue caps?
Edgy DC Oct 16 2006 01:32 PM |
His "thing" is for blue caps.
Willets Point Oct 16 2006 01:34 PM |
I thought his "thing" was big, scaly, and orange.
Valadius Oct 16 2006 01:41 PM |
MFS62 Oct 16 2006 01:44 PM |
I meant for blue caps.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 01:50 PM |
The blue caps are the true caps.
soupcan Oct 16 2006 01:53 PM |
Are blue caps preferable to blue batting helmets or are the helmets just as good?
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 01:59 PM |
If I had a cap photo and a helmet photo, both of equal quality, I'd choose the cap. But I've used plenty of helmet photos, and I'm not looking to replace them.
soupcan Oct 16 2006 02:04 PM |
But blue helmets are better than black caps, right?
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 02:07 PM |
Most definitely.
Edgy DC Oct 16 2006 02:13 PM |
He was also number one yesterday, relegating poor Cory Lidle to UMDB history.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 02:15 PM |
I noticed that, too. Lidle's reign only lasted three days. (Mookie Wilson won the fourth day after the plane crash.)
Edgy DC Oct 16 2006 02:16 PM |
All Mookie had to do was appear in the seats at Busch.
Vic Sage Oct 16 2006 02:20 PM |
more J-Lo butt shots, please!
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 02:23 PM |
She is considerably hotter than Rick White.
Valadius Oct 16 2006 03:28 PM |
One thing I've noticed is that Carlos Delgado rarely gets any hits on UMDB. Even with the postseason he's having, he's still ranked only 757 out of 799.
cooby Oct 16 2006 03:30 PM |
I just looked at him.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 03:38 PM |
Yes, he is somewhat underappreciated. But it's also become a rather steep climb for newcomers. Right now, to get "into the pack" you have to rise to about 760th place. Now that Delgado's there, he should start passing some people. (The lowest ranked Met who has been in the database since it began is Dennis Musgraves in 760th place. It looks like Delgado passed him about a week ago.)
Valadius Oct 16 2006 03:54 PM |
I found a blue cap photo of Jeff Barry:
Yancy Street Gang Oct 16 2006 03:55 PM |
I can make it bigger, too, but you lose clarity when you do it.

Then just let it go. No need to find something just so Yance can remove the Mr. Met pic from a Met sans his picture in UMDB. Sure there are some in there, but for the most part, make sure things fit the criteria. And see if they've been posted before, I know I've tried posting that Henry Owens pic before and Yancy didn't take it. Chances are, Yancy has seen most of the images on the net, hell he never did find a blue caped Xavier Nady that was a good clean full shot of him Yancy knows your trying to help, but this seems like a little too hard, plus like the man said, THERES A GAME ON! Steve

MFS62 Oct 19 2006 12:48 PM |
Why? Because he's smiling?
Yancy Street Gang Oct 19 2006 12:51 PM |
True. But Franco's more a scowler than a smiler.

Also, Endy Chavez's middle name is DeJesus, not William, according to ESPN.com and Wikipedia.
metirish Oct 23 2006 12:58 PM |
Mets.com has it as William.
Valadius Oct 23 2006 01:01 PM |
Huh. Strange.
Valadius Oct 23 2006 01:04 PM |
Oh wait a minute, go to the bottom of his profile on Mets.com, it says "Endy DeJesus Chavez graduated from Liceo Batalia Carabobo High School in Valencia, VZ". So I'm guessing DeJesus is right, and William is just a mistake.
MFS62 Oct 23 2006 01:11 PM |
I'm still not sure without seeing his birth certificate. It is very common on Spanish speaking countries to use the mother's maiden name as part of the person's second-to-last name.
Valadius Oct 23 2006 01:17 PM |
Actually, MFS, as I understand it, it's the opposite. The mother's maiden name is actually tacked on at the end in Spanish-speaking countries.

on a further side note: While I was at the Gettyimage site, I figured id purchase one just for the hell of it. To see the possible price range. I picked the most worthless image I could find, a picture of Perez dancing over the baseline on his way off the mound. Figuring the image had no baring on the game, I figured it would be on the cheaper end of the spectrum, if they defferentiate. So, for: Subject: Perez off the mound Image size: Medium Usage: Web page Time: for a 6 month period starting with purchase. 135$ ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE BUCKS! What a joke.

Those are nice, and thank you, but given that $135 usage fee, I may have to steer clear of Getty images.

Edgy DC Nov 13 2006 09:57 AM |
Here's one. If I dial up Bobby Valentine (or Willie Randolph or Dallas Green or Mike Cubbage, etc.) I get the dates that they were acquired or divested as players by the Mets, but I don't get the dates they were hired or fired as managers. Is that do-able?
Yancy Street Gang Nov 13 2006 10:02 AM |
I think so. It would require a little coding, and I'd have to track down the dates for each manager, but it's something I can add to my mental to-do list.

I think I may have included the hire and fire dates in that long year by year coaches posts a few weeks ago in the triva thread about Manny Acta.

Yancy Street Gang Jan 03 2007 03:07 PM |

That relief appearance in April of 1969 is a strange one.
It was the first game of a doubleheader at Shea. Seaver had started and pitched 7 innings two days earlier. Strange that he came into the game after the Cubs had scored four runs in the ninth to take a two-run lead. You'd never see that today.

GREAT new feature! Two additional requests: a dropdown with "as a Met"/"against the Mets", and the addition of "all postseason" as an option in the regular season/postseason dropdown.
Yancy Street Gang Jan 04 2007 01:16 PM |
Both good ideas, Seawolf, and I'll put them on my to-do list. The next step will be to extend this search feature to opposing players. (I can probably do it with just a few lines of code.) It will make it easier, for example, to find all multi-home run games that Billy Williams had against the Mets.

I do plan to eventually break the post-season games page down as you suggest. Maybe I'll get to that before Opening Day. I hadn't thought about it for the birthplaces page, but that's not a bad idea. I'll put that on the list, too.
That's in the works, but, unfortunately, only for the dead players. The living ones are too busy playing golf to get involved with Boggle. Sorry.
