Postseason Weather Watch

We probably should have started this at the beginning of the NLDS, but we're a little out of practice at this whole postseason thing.

Anyway, with weather threatening to be a factor for tonight's game, I thought I'd share the latest e National Weather Service forecast for St. Louis:

="National Weather Service"]Today: Occasional rain and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 59. Southeast wind between 14 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Tonight: Periods of rain before 1am, then areas of drizzle. Areas of fog after 1am. Low around 53. East wind 7 to 15 mph becoming south. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Tuesday: Areas of drizzle before 1pm. Areas of fog before 1pm. Otherwise, cloudy, then gradually becoming partly sunny, with a high near 70. West wind around 6 mph becoming south.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. Southeast wind around 6 mph.

I read major, major thunderstorms in St. Looie all day and all night today.

Possible rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches in St. Looie tonight.
I wonder how long they'll wait to make a decision to postpone the game?

I could use an early bedtime tonight.

On the other hand, I do want Glavine to pitch (and win) tonight so he has four days rest before Saturday.

A rainout and a possible rainout in one postseason series...when was the last time that happened?

We should ask the Yankees if there will be a game tonight since they are always the first to know.

I'm pretty sure the Yankees won't be playing tonight.

="National Weather Service"]This Afternoon: Occasional rain. High near 53. Southeast wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Tonight: Periods of rain before 1am, then areas of drizzle. Areas of fog after 1am. Low around 53. East wind 7 to 15 mph becoming south. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

I see that under in the This Afternoon section, the words "possibly a thunderstorm" were removed. Does that mean the forecast is slightly more promising?

YOU COULD USE AN EARLY NIGHT????

Ok, so I haven't seen one to conclusion yet, but last night I got till the 6th inning and they start at 1.15 AM for me.

Seriously, give me a gay dame sometime.

I tip my blue cap to you!

But for me, 11:30 to midnight is well past my bedtime, and I've been reduced to sneaking naps whenever I can. If it rains, I'll be in bed by 10 or 10:30, and that will make a world of difference to me in getting through the day tomorrow.

i'm feeling it today. Thankfully i didn't stay up for any of Saturday's fiasco.

If the game starts at 1:15 a.m. for you, why don't you take a nap beforehand? I'd probably go to be at 9:30 and set the alarm for 1. That extra 3½ hours of sleep would help a lot, I'd think.

Sounds like Army guard duty. 3 1/2 hours of sleep between shifts.

Accuweather gives hour-by-hour forecasts, and they have the rain stopping for good at around 6 p.m. (Which would be about an hour before the game, which is scheduled to start a little after 7 p.m. Central time.)

Meanwhile weather.com's hour-by-hour has the rain continuing to midnight and then turning into showers.

I don't know which is preferable.

Glavine pitching (and winning) tonight and being well rested for a possible Game 1 or Glavine going tomorrow on regular rest.

I figure that he'd be better against the Cards on regular rest but he's probably prepared himself well for a start tonight so maybe pitching tomorrow would throw him off?

I'm so confoosed.

Open Memo to Met Fans:

STOP WORRYING ABOUT GAME 1. DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER IT. WORRY ABOUT WINNING THE NLCS AND DON'T LET THE WORLD SERIES' ROTATION FACTOR INTO YOUR REASONING.

IF WILLIE IS THINKING THIS WAY THEN GAME 1'S STARTERS WILL BE ROGERS AND CARPENTER. SO CUT IT OUT.

Thank you for your time.

I think it's clear that him pitching (and winning) is tonight is preferable, because if he pitches (and wins) then the Mets will have won their third game, and that's what this is all about.

If he wins then of course that's the scenario we want.

Tonight: Windy with a steady rain this evening. Showers continuing overnight. Low 49F. SE winds at 25 to 35 mph, diminishing to 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Rainfall possibly over one inch. Locally heavier rainfall possible.

Tomorrow: Cloudy skies early, then partly cloudy in the afternoon. High 71F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph.

Tomorrow night: A few clouds. Low 57F. Winds light and variable.

Sounds like we get a night off tonight.

If so, hopefully they'll do it early, like last Wednesday, and avoid having people sit in the rain for an hour or two.

(Not that I care about the Cardinal fans with those red feathers on their chins. I don't want to be sitting around the house wondering if the game is going to be played. I hope they start on time or not at all.)

="Bloomberg.com"]Mets-Cardinals Game 5 Faces Rainout in St. Louis (Update1)
By Larry DiTore

Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Rain might postpone the fifth game of baseball's National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets tonight, a weather forecaster said.

The game, with the best-of-seven series tied at two games apiece, is scheduled to start at 8:19 p.m. New York time at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, where almost a half inch of rain has fallen today and another quarter inch is forecast tonight.

``Right now we're expecting a 100 percent chance of rain this evening,'' said Melissa Byrd, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in St. Louis. ``It's going to be kind of iffy that they'll play.''

The rain probably will taper off by tomorrow morning.

Major League Baseball makes the decision whether to postpone a game, as it did with the scheduled series opener on Oct. 11 in New York. That game was called off about an hour before its scheduled start and played the next day instead.

No - it really doesn't. I was very concerned about Glavine pitching on short rest. I was having flashbacks to Seaver pitching on short rest in the 1973 World Series. Damn Yogi....

Well one idea out there is that Tony would go with Carpenter on 3 days rest on Tuesday. I think it would benifit the Mets, if he burns his ace before the series returns to Shea.

That wouldn't make much sense. If the Card win, he has his ace ready to clinch; if they lose, he has their ace ready to pitch to stave off elimination.

Frayed Knot

LaRussa sez Weaver starts tomorrow.
Which makes sense really. Carpenter would be set then to pitch game 6 in NYC for either the clincher or to avoid elimination.
