IGT 7/14, 2nd Half Kickoff

So this morning I had to rent a car to drive to a work thingy and on the way back into the city (returning the vehicle to 43rd & 2nd) I bypassed the 42nd street exit ramp which could take me to the Hess gas station at 10th & 45th and instead headed off downtown.

Driving crosstown in heavy slow traffic, I called the rental place asking where I could fill up nearby and she said "62nd & York is the only one I know." So I crossed to 1st Ave., drove uptown to 62nd and came out @York only to realize the gas station was on the opposite side of the street and a Uie was inadvisable in the traffic.

So like an idiot, I made a left at the next street, hoping there was some escape but instead found myself on the northbound FDR. Did I mention I had to pee since Jersey? Up to 96th street, back down 2nd Ave at a snail's pace, down to 58th, over to York, gassed up, over to 2nd again and back downtown to 43rd to drop off the stupid car.

This was about 1.25 hours after exiting the Tunnel and I had to pee so bad I could barely walk. So I stopped at the Hyatt at Grand Central and used their well-appointed men's room and on the way out, happened to notice some big guys in suits over to the left. Of course, this is where the visitors stay. They were Braves.

I'm so late I couldn't hang around and see who was who, but outside, there a bunch of dorky kids weariung various Braves gear, holding pens and cards and stuff. So I find the dorkiest one and say, "Hi, I'm Andruw Jones. Can I sign for you?"

He looked at me all braces, napoleon dynamite style.

Play Ball!

Not so cool, Tommie.

Benson is dealing.

But the Braves get a single after ten in a row to start. Five strikeouts.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 14 2005 08:10 PM

Cairo has no range, Piazza has no arm, and it's a tie game.

Edgy DC
Jul 14 2005 08:11 PM

Braves tie it up on a single by Jones.

I was late switching back from the Sox-MFY game (good guys up 4-2) when I caught Lolita Lopez saying someone was injured, maybe a broken bone, won't be coming back any time soon...who was she talking about?

Cliffie leads off the bottom of the sixth with his third hit.

Washington lost to Milwaukee, so the winner of this game claims a game in the standings.

DAVID WRIGHT!

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 14 2005 09:25 PM

We should win all games where Beltran goes 4-4 and Wright hits two home runs.

Edgy DC
Jul 14 2005 09:26 PM

Cornelius up with the tying run on second after a double by Beltran.

Don't be laim against a lefty again, Cliffy.

Quick 2-0.

I know it's just one game, but...

If Beltran (4-for-4) is heating up...
and if Mikey (monster, old Mike, the other way, wow home run) is heating up...
and David Wright is suddenly playing Gold Glove defense and whacking the ball all over the park...

...could this be the start?

(I know - the rest of the lineup today other than those three guys is 0-for-15. But I can dream.)

MIKE PIAZZA!!!

He got beat on that fastball but he was quick and strong enough to drive it out and keep it fair. Hot damn.

That was the Mike Piazza of old.

Wright totally made up for his error on that nab of the sac bunt. That was sweet. And the kid's got a flair for the dramatic--taking the ball oh-so slowly to third base . . .

Why no radar gun tonight? Loopy looks like he's got more zip on his fastball than I've seen all season but I have no way of making sure.

Edgy DC

To kill some buzz, Wright has looked pooie on defense.

Edgy DC
Jul 14 2005 09:47 PM

On the other hand, Looper striking out a lefthander to end the game is as good a sign of good things as any.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 14 2005 09:52 PM

Well, they say now Matsui ain;t coming back for awhile.

Anderson Hernandez couldn't hit much worse than Cairo and almost definitely fields better. Whaddaya say, Omar?

Rotblatt
Jul 14 2005 09:54 PM

Didn't Wright pull both of his dingers? I think THAT'S a great sign too. He was going the other way a lot, so peeps started a reverse OF shift against him. Wright's better if he's not a one-trick pony. Unless, you know, his trick is hitting 2 HRs a game or something.

Loopy looked good tonight. Sharp fastball and pretty decent location. Splitter looked a'ight too.

>>>Wright has looked pooie on defense.<<<

Dude, the diving catch of the bunt and jog back to third for the DP was
hardly pooie. He does have blips on grounders hit right at him, but David
was the man tonight before Piazza's three run blast.

]Didn't Wright pull both of his dingers?

One dead-center, one left-center.
I was noticing just last week that Wright hasn't been pulling. Of course for the last 3 weeks he hasn't been hitting much of anything.

The bigger crime on his error today wasn't even fumbling it, it was then rushing the throw on the slow-footed Estrada. Young mistake.

I think he's still learning 2B . . . But you might be right anyway. I'd be a little leary of calling him up so quickly, but he certainly has adjusted well to AAA so far.

Yeah, well, somebody had to bring the poor guy down. Just playing Devil's advocate

Seriously, making decisions under fire seems to have the guy locked up. Reaction plays he's better on. I'd trade a pair of homers for a pair of random miscues seven days a week.

i went to the game, and was hoping that when i got home i could catch papaya head's catch on the sportcenter top 10 plays. it was number one, yo.

dwright's double play was number 2, as the mets dominated top plays.
