SOSH jumps the shark

They want money for it now...$20 a year, $100 for a "lifetime membership"..

And worth every nickel.

Matter of time I suppose. Once something gets that popular that peeps just 'need' it, someone else decides to cash in.

Does this mean though that newbies can now join the fold?

Will the oldsters get tossed if they don't ante up? Seems to me that the OGs should be given a free lifetime membership seeing as it was them there guys what brought the SOSH into prominence.

Is that the case that there are those that will be granted the free ride or no?

Let's see if they can keep Curt Schilling's credit card a secret!

Tough call here. I've read since the beginning have maybe 100 posts in 5 years.

20 beans per ain't so bad.

I'd prolly spring for the hundred if I was a member.

So if a quarter of the members send in the minimum, they gross $10,000?
That's a lot of peanuts and cracker jacks.

This might help weed out the pretenders that are hoping to chat with Curt Schilling, BTW are contributions needed/accepted to help maintain this site?

Please pause while KC punches some numbers into his calculator.

If he punches in 71077345, it spells "SHELL OIL" upside down. My cousin taught me that when I was a kid, and for some reason, it's stuck with me ever since.

Not that any of us plans on sending anyone $71 million.

This was the punchline to a calculator joke involving Dolly Parton.

I don't remember the joke.

The total comes to $358 per person.

We may pass around a hat one day, but it's not necessary right now.
Thanks for asking.

Uh, let us know in advance, okay?

They sent around an email saying you don't HAVE to pay for a membership, but that they're more or less expecting you to if you can.

I'll pay it, since I'd feel like a real schmuck if I didn't after all the time I've spent reading it.

The real story is that they're abandoning EZBoard due to its fuckups and are hosting their own website. Thus the money they're trying to raise.

Sounds pretty neat, actually. Peeps who pay $100 will get their own email address & a SoSH-hosted blog.

If they'd accepted my application, I'd have ponied up the $20, but apparently mentioning 1986 makes an application a non-starter (I said I was a Mets fan who enjoyed reading intelligent baseball discussion and thought I could contribute, then promised I would make no gratuitous references to 1986. Which was, you know, a gratutious reference to 1986. I thought it was funny, anyway . . .).

My only point here, and I really don't care, is do they really need 10, 20, $40,000
for their new operation? I doubt it.

Looks pretty good actually--it's at sonsofsamhorn.net

You don't need to pay up front to register.

Just for the heck of it, because I wouldn't post there anyway, I registered at this place, oh, about a week ago.

While looking through the membership list, I noticed that probably 90% of the people signed up there are on the "validating" or whatever list. Until you are approved, you can't do ANYTHING, post, use the mailbox, set up a profile, nothing.
Oh, but you can sign in, for what advantage, I have no clue.

I figure by the time I am cashing Social Security checks, maybe I'll get in.

I highly suspect there are hidden forums there too, accessible to members only, because they refer to things that I can't see.

I have to believe a lot of previous posters are now shut out.

Thank you KC, for a totally free forum that we had to wait maybe five minutes to be approved! :)
