I got hired!

Yancy Street Gang
Jul 14 2005 11:27 AM

Well, that didn't take too long.

I received and accepted an offer yesterday. I start my new job on August 1. More money, more days off. Longer commute, but that will be offset by working from home two days per week.

If you're keeping score, I resigned 16 days after I was given my 90-day notice. I had been in full job search mode even before then. The resignation came 66 days after I uploaded my resume to Monster.com, HotJobs.com, and CareerBuilder.com. (I think, although I can't be sure, that CareerBuilder got me the most leads.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And no, cooby, I don't have to move. Jobs that would have required moving were never considered.

Well, that's a relief, because I was about to call Denise and see if she had any counter job openings at Arbys

Yay Yancy. It's good to see that in the land of the free a big Thing with a rocky skin condition is not discriminated against in the job market.

I guess being a box office star helped.

Glad that it all worked out for you Yancey. It's hard to keep a good man down.

Aces.

I've got to get into that job market.

After availing myself of a full range of professional development opportunities here maybe.

If you have a current resume, post it to Monster, CareerBuilder, and HotJobs. Then sit back and wait.

With these sites you don't have to be highly motivated to generate leads. Before long, you'll start getting e-mails or phone calls from recruiters. The stuff they dangle in front of you may or may not be appealing. If it's not, you thank them and ask them to consider you for future opportunities. If it is, you let things play out, and maybe you'll find something.

Faced with pending unemployment, I took a more aggressive approach. But if you're not in a hurry, the passive approach could work for you too, with very little effort.

Congrats, YSG! I'm in kind of a strange situation right now. I have a job that I love, doing some very specialized legal work for the federal government. But there is a bill pending in Congress (due for a vote in the Senate judiciary committee today, in fact) that, if it becomes law in its current form would effectively eliminate my job. I'm not likely to be out of work anytime soon: It would first have to become law, wouldn't apply to stuff already in the pipeline, and the constitutionality of the statute (dubious, IMHO), would have to be litigated. But it has me pretty stressed anyway. Aside from its personal impact on me, the statute is simply terrible policy (one of the few points on which liberal me and arch-conservative ex-Congressman Bob Barr, who testified against the bill, agree). So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that saner heads prevail and the bill dies in committee, but who knows?

Keeping my fingers crossed for you packrat!

And I'll call my Congressman, if need be :)

I'm just a bill.
Yes, I'm only a bill.
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city.
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law some day
At least I hope and pray that I will
But today I am still just a bill.

Boy: Gee, Bill, you certainly have a lot of patience and courage.
Bill: Well, I got this far. When I started I wasn't even a bill, I was just an idea. Some folks back home decided they wanted a law passed, so they called their local Congressman, and said, "You're right, there oughta be a law." Then he sat down and wrote me out and introduced me to Congress. And I became a bill, and I'll remain a bill until they decide to make me a law.

I'm just a bill
Yes I'm only a bill,
And I got as far as Capitol Hill.
Well, now I'm stuck in committee
And I'll sit here and wait
While a few key Congressmen discuss
and debate
Whether they should let me be a law.
How I hope and pray that they will,
But today I am still just a bill.

Boy: Listen to those Congressmen arguing! Is all that discussion and debate about you?
Bill: Yeah, I'm one of the lucky ones. Most bills never even get this far. I hope they decide to report on me favorably, otherwise I may die.
Boy: Die?
Bill: Yeah, die in committee. Ooh, but it looks like I'm gonna live! Now I go to the House of Representatives, and they vote on me.
Boy: If they vote yes, what happens?
Bill: Then I go to the Senate and the whole thing starts all over again.
Boy: Oh no!
Bill: Oh yes!

I'm just a bill
Yes, I'm only a bill
And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill
Well, then I'm off to the White House
Where I'll wait in a line
With a lot of other bills
For the president to sign
And if he signs me, then I'll be a law.
How I hope and pray that he will,
But today I am still just a bill.

Boy: You mean even if the Whole Congress says you should be a law, the president can still say no?
Bill: Yes, that's called a veto. If the president vetoes me, I have to go back to Congress and they vote on me again, and by that time you're so old...
Boy: By that time it's very unlikely that you'll become a law. It's not easy to become a law, is it?
Bill: No!

But how I hope and pray that I will,
But today I am still just a bill.

Congressman: He signed you, Bill! Now you're a law!
Bill: Oh yes!!

The Simpsons
An Amendment to Be
3F16 - 17th March 1996

[Little Boy] Hey, who left all this garbage on the steps of Congress?
[Amendment] I'm not garbage
I'm an amendment to be
Yes, an amendment to be
And I'm hoping that they'll ratify me
There's a lot of flag-burners who have got too much freedom
I want to make it legal for policemen to beat 'em
'Cause there's limits to our liberties
At least, I hope and pray that there are
'Cause those liberal freaks go too far
[Little Boy] But why can't we just make a law against flag burning?
[Amendment] Because that law would be unconstitutional
But if we change the constitution -
[Little Boy] - Then we could make all sorts of crazy laws!
[Amendment] Now you're catching on!
[Little Boy] But what if they say you're not good enough to be in the constitution?
[Amendment] Then I'll crush all opposition to me!
And I'll make Ted Kennedy pay
If he fights back, I'll say that he's gay
[Congressman] Good news, amendment! They ratified you!
You're in the US Constitution!
[Amendment] Oh, yeah! Door's open, boys!

Hey Yancey, sing them a few bars on your way out.

Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

My woman done left,
An' took all the reasons I was workin' for.
You better not to try to stand in my way,
As I'm a walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

I've been workin' in this fact'ry,
For nigh on fifteen years.
All this time, I watched my woman,
Drownin' in a pool of tears.
An I've seen a lot of my good folk die,
Had a lot of bills to pay.
I'd give the shirt right off of my back,
If I had the guts to say.

Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.
My woman done left,
An' took all the reasons I was workin' for.
You better not to try to stand in my way,
As I'm a walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

Well, that foreman, he's a regular dog,
The line boss is a fool.
Got a brand new flat-top haircut;
Lord, he thinks he's cool.
One of these days, I'm gonna blow my top,
And sucker, he's gonna pay
Lord, I can't wait to see their faces,
When I get the nerve to say:

Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.
My woman done left,
An' took all the reasons I was workin' for.
You better not to try to stand in my way,
As I'm a walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it,
I ain't workin' here no more.

Take this job and shove it.

]Keeping my fingers crossed for you packrat!

Thanks, cooby. Two Senators (Leahy and Feingold) voiced strenuous objections to the bill and the committee delayed the vote until September so they could gather additional data. I got the impression from Leahy's and Feingold's comments that the bill will not survive in its current form, so I'm feeling somewhat relieved. As I said, the bill has come under fierce criticism from liberals and conservatives alike, so I'm hopeful the most egregious provisions (including the one that would kill my job) will be removed. We shall see . . .

BTW, if you really do want to call or write your congressmen, the bill is called the Streamlined Procedures Act. The Senate version is S. 1088 and the House version is H.R. 3035. The most objectionable provision (and the one that I think is probably unconstitutional) is one that would virtually strip federal courts of jurisdiction over habeas corpus petitions brought by state death row inmates. There is a narrow exception to the rule but, as witnesses testified, it is so narrow it would cover nobody.

IIRC, you are from PA. Senator Specter is the Senate Judicary Committee Chairman.

Yancy Street Gang, how is the new job going? Is today a work at home day?

Yancy Street Gang

Nope. No work at home days for the first four weeks or so. I still need to get acclimated and stuff.

Seems like a nice place. They're not keeping me all that busy yet, but that won't last.

Packrat, I got a response from Sen. Spector today and PMd you with it.

I'm not sure, but I don't think he addresses this bill at all.
