Manny Acta Trivia

Manny Acta Trivia Question: Manny Acta, Mets third base coach, recently interviewed for the job managing the Giants. Without freaking checking, how many of the 2006 Giants is he actually younger than?

Crazy stupid bonus question. Manny is alphabetically first among Met coaches, at least he is until Don Aase is retained.. How far can you name the Mets roster of coaches alphabetically? Again, please don't freaking check. On your freaking honor.

Actually, both these questions are only partially related to Manuel Elias Acta.

Without freakin checking, I guess four on the first question
Bonds, Alou, Vizquel, Finley. Then again, I don't even know how old Acta is, so for me this is probably an exercise in futility.

Edgy DC
Oct 24 2006 03:28 PM

Four is... incorrect.

Coaches alphabetically...

Acta
Alomar
Apodaca
Baylor
Benedict
Berra
Brantley? (Wasn't Mickey Brantley a coach? I could be wrong.)
Cubbage
Dromenhouser (Do bullpen catchers count?)
Galante
Gibson
Harrelson

I'm sure I missed some in there. There had to be an E.

Now I know why everybody wanted to use UMDB

Edit: Good gravy, he's ten years younger than I am. Now I really feel old when the coaches are younger

Wow, I missed that this generated any interest. All apologies.

Nobody guessed. But in 2006, seven Gigantes were older than Manny Acta:

Jose Vizcaino, 38
Tim Worrell, 38
Moises Alou, 39
Omar Vizquel, 39
Barry Bonds, 41
Steve Finley, 41, and
Jeff Fassero, 43

Mark Sweeney tried to be the eighth, but came in nine month's younger, a full gestation period.

Seawolf took a plumb stab at the alphabetical coaches question

Manny Acta 2005 - 2006, 2005 - 2006
Sandy Alomar 2005, 2006
Bob Apodaca 1996 - 1999
Don Baylor 2003 - 2004, 2004
Bruce Benedict 1997 - 1999
Yogi Berra 1965 - 1971
Mickey Brantley 1999
Tom Burgess 1977
Chris Chambliss 2002
Guy Conti 2005 - 2006

1) Acta Correct
2) Alomar Correct (The Mets actually are currently employing their top two alphabetical coaches)
3) Apodaca Correct
4) Baylor Correct
5) Benedict Holy crap! Correct
6) Berra Correctamunco
7) Brantley? (Wasn't Mickey Brantley a coach? I could be wrong.) No, you couldn't. Well you could, but you're not. Correct

8) Cubbage Incorrect
9) Dromenhouser (Do bullpen catchers count?) [Incorrect and no
10) Galante Incorrect

Obviously, the other two are wrong as well, but a weepingly good showing. We're mising three guys between Brantley and Cubbage.

Edgy, after incorrectly guessing the first time, I looked up the Giants roster. I believe you're missing a certain relief pitcher who has a brief Metly past.

And I think two of the "C" coaches are Chris Chambliss and Chuck Cottier.

Edgy DC
Oct 25 2006 11:04 AM

Yup. I knew I had eight yesterday. Mike Stanton is the cat Solo refers to.

Not that they all served at the same time, and perhaps less than half have a future from this point forward. But that's one third of a roster.

Edgy DC
Oct 25 2006 11:07 AM

Chambliss is correct. We're looking for one before him and one after him.

Getting them in precise alpha order is a little outrageous for a closed-book quiz.

I kinda like the idea of continuing to riff until we get 'em all.

Confirming Phil Cavaretta's coachness has been on my to-do list for a while.

He wasn't listed among the Mets coaches in their press guide, but there are many who claim he was a coach. I don't know the exact years, however, so haven't entered them for him. I'll have to go through the yearbooks to find out when (and if) he was an actual coach.

I think the timeframe would be around 1975.

From Baseball Library....

]

Cavarretta was the Cubs' player-manager in 1951-53, and led the NL with 12 pinch hits in '51. Fired in spring training of 1954 because owner Phil Wrigley bridled at Cavarretta's prediction of a second-division finish, he finished his playing career with the White Sox. He managed extensively in the minors, coached and scouted for the Tigers, and became an excellent batting instructor for the Mets' organization.

I seem to remember sending in Caravetta evidence to UMDB once before. I don't know if it was positive evidence that he was a coach or negative evidence, perhaps that he was merely a minor league coach/manager and spring training instructor.

I'd say that's definitely the same guy. Mos' def'.

But maybe they're both the wrong guy, because your source claims he managed the Mets.

It'd be one big day in UMDB history if we confirmed that not only did Burgess coach for the team without us knowing, but he managed as well.

Hmmm, I've seen him listed in those press guides in the Minor League staff though as the roving hitting guy.

BTW, MTBN does have him in the All-Time Coaches & Managers wearing #50 from 75-77, as well as #44 in 1975 (must have been his uni as a Cub?)

One of these days I'm going to post my year-by-year listing of all Met ML staffers, coaches, scouts, ect...

Also I believe he did rate photographs in the Yearbook with the rest of the staff

I saw this article yesterday about Acta, and Id like to share it or link it but now I cant find the thing.
I saw it yesterday but it was first posted soon after the Lidle accident.

Turned out that the afternoon of game one (which was rained out, ayk), Manny got a call from his landlord telling him the building he lived in was hit by a plane.
At this point, no one knew who the pilot or passenger was, or whose plane it was, for that matter.
Most talk was about the possibility of terrorists.

The article was about how things unfolded as the afternoon progressed-
finding out the plane was owned by Lidle,...and then that he was in it.

It was a very sobering piece.
Comparing how baseball is just a little game we play compared to the harsh reality of what occured that afternoon.

Had some really interesting facts that I wasnt aware of.
A Mets team doctor has offices right across the street from the building.
Izzy Isringhausen lived there when he played for the Mets.

Acta returned there shortly after the accident and promptly turned in his keys and moved out. Said he was planning to move out anyway.

It was a very good article.
Hope I find it, cuz this post does not do it justice.
