Expanding the Roster

We are expecting our second around Opening Day, 2007. At 12 weeks, the technician told us definitively that it was a boy. At 16 weeks, the doctor swore it's a girl. So we have no idea what to expect. Whatever it is, we'll be happy.

Ryan is tougher to read. We may have to sign him to an extension or something because he's been dropping hints about demanding a trade.

Just make sure you don't get the roster above 40 people until after August 31.

Anyhow, congrats, CF.

Congratulations! I hope both Mrs. CF and daughter (to be) are doing well.

My wife and I are fortunate to have a son that was followed by a daughter. I hope your children bring as much joy to your lives as ours have to my wife and I.

Edited to reflect expected daughter, not yet arrived. I initially jumped the gun a little bit on the future CFer.

When my sister was pregnant with her 2nd she asked her doctor how her son (then not quite 3, I believe) would be expected to feel about the arrival of a new baby.
The doctor's reply was; "About the same as you'd feel if your husband suddenly brought home a new wife"

Unfortunately, I have some bad news. Last Friday morning my wife had to have an emergency C-section because our baby was in distress. Miranda was born on January 19, 2007 at 7:09 a.m. She was 11 weeks early.

My wife is bouncing back nicely. She is so strong the doctors allowed her to come home after 2 days rather than the requisite 3 day stay.

Miranda wasn't quite so fortunate. On Saturday, after a courageous 36 hour fight, she died from many complications. She had a lot of spirit, her mother's eyes and her father's curly hair. We told her she would be moving on to a better place and despite her youth, she gave us the impression that she understood. Before she left, she promised she would save us good seats until we could be with her again…right along the third base line where her daddy likes them.

My wife and I had some time to prepare and are at peace with what has happened. The good news is that the doctors say this will have no effect on my wife for any future pregnancies. Much to our surprise, we seem to be holding up ok, and are determined to bounce back from this stronger than ever.

Thank you guys. My wife and I have been genuinely touched by the outpouring of support we've received. Everyone has been so thoughtful we have never felt alone throughout any of this process. One of my buddies, a big weightlifter from college, went as far as to offer to come down from Boston and cook and clean for my wife. The thought of my meathead buddy sweeping in an apron was enough to make us laugh even in times like this.

I'll be honest, after things had settled down a bit, I dreaded the thought of breaking the news to people...having to have this conversation. But surprisingly, I've found that talking about it has been therapeutic...and it has helped us heal. I've also found that everyone has a story...everyone has had some hardship. Seeing the way our friends bounced back from those hardships has been encouraging and given us hope.

Although she was with us only a short time, I wanted to make sure she was given her due. She received a name, a birth certificate, an outfit, a hat and a stuffed animal. We also picked out a memento that my wife will wear so that part of Miranda can be with us always.

That being said, since she is no longer with us, we are looking to the future and looking to get back to normal. We are grateful to have a beautiful and healthy son, we are grateful for our friends and family who have shown so much love, and we are grateful that my wife is healthy and able to have more children should it be in the cards for us.
