How do you upload images that are not on the internet?

The img thingy above the text box seems to be only for images attached to a url.

That's correct - you need a URL if you want to post a photo.

[url=http://www.imageshack.us/]Image Shack[/url] is a free service that will give you a URL for an image, if you want to get a URL for something that's on your computer. I use it constantly - it's a great service.
