O's Find Soriano Is Seeking A Rich Free Agent Payday

patona314

Washington Post: "The Baltimore Orioles, according to a team source, began preliminary discussions with Washington Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano , and were floored by the free agent's initial contract outline. According to the source, Soriano is seeking a deal similar to the seven-year, $119 million deal given to center fielder Carlos Beltran by the New York Mets before the 2005 season."

that's some serious scratch

He's no Beltran......would the O's have to trade Tejada before they sign him?

a) Welcome

b) Soriano won't - or, at least shouldn't - get that kind of money.
As dangerous as he can be, he doesn't have the OBP, or the middle of the diamond defensive skills, to command that kind of scratch.

c) Supposedly, sides aren't allowed to be discussing money at this point (except for the FAs current squad)

Are both sides prohibited from discussing money? Maybe Soriano can say, "I'm looking for $119 million and a tent" to which the Orioles can't say anything more than, "Baltimore has a nice Aquarium and we're famous for our crabs."

That's probably accurate.

And, as we all know, a team would never (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) skirt the rules before the (Now 12th?) deadline.

Then he should fit in well in the clubhouse.

Baltimore's reputation is shot. I think Soriano will look for something a little more "high profile". The Dodgers maybe? BTW is Boras his agent?

If the Phils were dumping Abreu's salary I doubt they'd come up with the scratch for Soriano.

Diego Bentz finishes a pathetic second to Bean Stringfellow in the funny-agent-name contest.

Ask your doc, he/she'll give you a 6-pack on the house.... Actually the Cubbies would be an interesting destination. Pinella's looking for new blood.

Soriano is a year older than Beltran to boot. Keep in mind, though, that the league is full of money right now. I wouldn't give him that much, but it wouldn't surprise me if somebody does.

"here in Baltimore we have a long history of rewarding players with incentives for At-Bats, All-Star appearences, placing in the top 5 in the MVP race, winning a silver-slugger, and other such things. not that we are offering any of that to you at the moment."

True, but I think the Phillies are going to be going hard after Aramis Ramirez instead.

Johnny Dickshot

Why instead? If I'm the Phils I try both. And I don't believe the Abreu dump means they wouldn't try. They'd out-hit the Mets to the division.

As long as they have Burrell's ridiculous salary on their books, I find it highly unlikely that Gillick would saddle another huge contact on kust one player on this team...

Yancy Street Gang

An article in the Philadelphia Inquirer early this week suggested that the Phillies plan for this winter is to find a way to unload Burrell, trade for Sheffield, and sign Soriano.

smg58
Nov 01 2006 09:33 AM

The Yankees would take Burrell for Sheffield, I'm sure. Keep in mind that first base was always Burrell's natural position.

Not to sound dumb or anything, but maybe the Phillies should try to get a competent pitcher? Assuming they ever want to win, that is.

Good. There's been some concern because some newbies disappear after a few posts. We thought they may be interpreting that greeting as an insult: "Welcome aboard, dick!" We of course would never call you "dick" ... until we know you better.

Spelling it that way causes no confusion along the lines of "did he just call me a dick?" It may cause confusion as we get further removed from Mike Bordick.

Peeps used to say "welcome aboardick" which was the one that I thought could be taken as an insult. Does anyone have a pic of the sign from 2000?

I may be reduced to tears if that happens. Not a Soriano fan here.
