The Mets have never had a guy wearing uniform No. 9 named to hit in the 9th spot in the batting order in a starting lineup.
ScarletKnight41 Nov 05 2006 08:31 PM |
1 would have to be Mookie.
Iubitul Nov 05 2006 08:37 PM |
5 would have to be Mr. Wright
metirish Nov 05 2006 08:37 PM |
I'm wrong but I'll guess Ventura,# 4

2 for Elster? Guessing the number of games doesn't sound like fun
Edgy DC Nov 05 2006 08:44 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Nov 05 2006 08:55 PM |
Six is such an star-crossed number, outside of Wally Backman. I was going to guess Daryl Boston, but I'm going to switch to his successor, Joe Orsulak.

3 for Buddy Harrelson?
KC Nov 05 2006 08:52 PM |
Gotta be

What kind of nut would bat Harrelson third?
Yancy Street Gang Nov 05 2006 09:04 PM |
Staub 4?
Edgy DC Nov 05 2006 09:07 PM |
In part because Wright was already selected, I'll toss Steve Henderson in as number 5. I guess he batted there, oh, 143 times.
Edgy DC Nov 05 2006 09:20 PM |
I'm certain Mike Piazza batted 31st more than any other Met.
Elster88 Nov 05 2006 09:36 PM |

Elster spent the majority of his Metly career as 21. 2 = Sasser? Can't be.
Elster88 Nov 05 2006 09:37 PM |
7 = Todd Pratt?

1. Mookie (SK)
Can you believe though that in 1,300+ games, he never batted third even once? 4. Staub (YSG) 5. Wright (lubitul) 6. 7. 8. Still need 2, 6, 7, 8 (all prior guesses wrong)
Elster88 Nov 05 2006 09:39 PM |
Yes.
Elster88 Nov 05 2006 09:40 PM |
If Edgy's guess was null and void, I'll take Daryl Boston at 6.

still wrong ... though had Boston not spent one season wearing 7, it'd be right.
Elster88 Nov 05 2006 09:42 PM |
One more guess before bed, which I'm sure is wrong because I think he only dipped down to 7th in the order in the late 80's....the Kid for 8.
Johnny Dickshot Nov 05 2006 09:43 PM |
Carter wrong. He had only 1 game in 8.
Edgy DC Nov 05 2006 09:47 PM |

There's actually an answer to this. As numbers were originally assigned to coincide with a player's position in the batting order (Ruth:3; Gehrig: 4), the catcher --- tending at the time to be the next to worst hitter in the lineup, after the pitcher --- got assigned 8 a lot, because they batted eighth a lot. Randomly, I checked retrosheet for opening day in 1922. They have boxscores for four games that day. Of the eight teams in those four games, all eight batted their catcher eigth. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some teams with catchers who hit well enough to warrant a better slot, but we're run by managers who didn't want to break convention. Though the convention has long since passed, catchers oft carry on the tradition to wear what their forebears wore, even if they're not sure why. Besides, it's a good number for a catcher. It's symmetrical, for the only player who is regularly photographed from from benind. It's got a no-nonsense earthiness to it (nothing mystical about 8), and when rendered in block letters it has the working-class stockiness of a catcher.

I'm guessing you were just being funny here, but isn't the pitcher the only player regularly photographed from behind. The catcher is probably photographed from behind only as much as any of the other players, which is when he's at bat. You rarely get a shot from behind home plate during games, and when you do the umpire gets in the way.

I'm going to guess Chuck Hiller for #2, and Joe Orsulak for # 6.

Chuck Hiller is wrong, but not by much.

I remember running a similar quiz, but with uniform number not a factor. Who batted leadoff most often, who batted second, etc.

seawolf17 Nov 07 2006 09:54 AM |
The first six that came to mind was Melvin Mora, he wasn't around long enough. Are we allowed to at least look at the list on MBTN?
Johnny Dickshot Nov 07 2006 09:55 AM |
There's a clue above.

Well, the clue gave it away, if I read your clue correctly. "8th of an 8th" = 1988, meaning some ex-Dodger.
Edgy DC Nov 07 2006 11:05 AM |
Interesting.
metirish Nov 07 2006 03:02 PM |
Jim Hickman wore number 6 and hit in the six slot 103 times, unless I am not understanding this quiz....that's possible.
Edgy DC Nov 07 2006 03:07 PM |
Hickman wore three different numbers during his Mets career however.
metirish Nov 07 2006 03:08 PM |
Oh,ok..thanks
Johnny Dickshot Nov 07 2006 03:13 PM |
Yes, Hickman did most of his damage in No. 9 and 27.
