Coaches

I saw a small item in one of the papers the other day saying that all of the current coaching staff had been asked back for next year and that all had accepted -- although Manny Acta is still on the interview circuit for a few managers jobs.

Not real earth-shattering news I realize, but for a while there were more than a few stories concerning Rick Peterson's shakey future here which are now put to rest. I remember Adam Rubin saying that a year or so into his tenure he was sure there'd be no way he'd last. But I guess his detractors in the front office have either been replaced or silenced by the Minaya contingent, and that the occasional stories about him not really being in synch with Willie go by the boards as well.

Of all the coaches on the staff I would be pissed if Peterson were not back...I've never read why him and Willie didn't get along or whatever that was about...

"Didn't get along" was never offered as a reason, more like the two were just closer to opposites - Willie managing "by his gut" teamed with Ricky the number nerd - and not neccesarily in synch all the time. Remember also that Peterson preceded both Willie & Omar here and was considered a Howe/Wilpon hire. The real perceived anti-Pete cabal was among some of those "senior advisors" that Fred & Jeff layered themselves with for a time.

What FK said.

Classic case of "Person X (or in this case, Person X and Y as Peterson predates Omar) is saddled with Person Z from an older regime" becoming the sole basis for percieved friction.

Usually it's with a manager/coach and a GM (ala Phillips being saddled with Bobby V who was hired under McIllvaine's watch) but usually those with conspiratorial minds (or the need to try to drive wedges between people) will pick on any seniario where a member of an old staff is kept despite a complete overhaul.

Have there been reports of actual friction?

Minaya kept Duquette on. Randolph kept Peterson on. Maybe it was a peaceful turnover.

I hat Petersen because his penchant for wearing jackets keep the Mets in black hats....

Between Randolph & Peterson? ... No. Just speculation of differeing philosophies.

Well it's not like Peterson being kept on was Randolph's call. Rick was in the middle of a multi-year deal and 1st-time skippers rarely get to pick their entire staffs much less kick out incumbents who pre-date them.

I think the fact that Peterson will be back - presumably a new, maybe multi-year deal - means that the anti-Rick faction in the front office (something that HAS been reported before) has either moved on, been stifled, or simply won over.

Are the CPF-ers really happy with Rick Down?
If not, who would you rather see as Mets batting coach?
Just curious.

I don't know enough to be able to say whether Down is doing a good job or not.

The Mets had one of their best hitting years ever, but they did have prolonged slumps from Wright and Delgado. I don't think you can blame hitting coaches for slumps; they're a fact of life.

I don't see any reason why Down should be fired. Unless, perhaps, the frozen head of Ted Williams is available.

LOL!

I think it might be easier if the players just read Ted's book on hitting, which some say is the best how-to book ever written on the subject.

Well, I think that at the end of last year and all of this year, RP's work has solidified whatever shaky ground he was on...that, and the complete removal / exodus of anyone who disagreed with his mojo.

Minaya was not a fan when he first got here, and neither was Willie...that seems to have changed.
